My son accidentally drained his transmission instead of the oil.
    2006 Taco automatic.
I have no idea how much he let out , I put 1.5 qts of Valvoline Max life in it and he said it was OK.
Well , now he says it’s hesitating out of first gear and Has high Reving .
    I’m at a loss .
Any thoughts on how to salvage this ?

No idea what your actual capacity is...but I think its a LOT more than 1.5 quarts. Check the dipstick. I suspect you're talking more like 4-5 quarts to fill it back up.

    That title made me laugh....

Is there no dipstick to check the level?....

A quick search is showing about 3.5 quarts for a drain and fill. Start putting more in it, checking the level as you go (with the engine running)

Sounds like the capacity is 4 quarts if you drain the pan if that helps any.

It's probably never been changed..the only thing that was keeping it going was the suspended material in the oil.

Yeah , no dip stick . There is a check plug on the pan. I will add some more in the morning and try the check procedure.

Trans temp should be between 95-115. If you have a scan tool. Usually 3-3.5 quarts when you drain.

No, more likely that he is running with not enough fluid for the transmission to function. If you are low on fluid your tranny won't be able to shift.

He should just do a drain and fill at this point. Sounds like the amount of fluid in the tranny is unknown, but draining and filling can change that.

    This.

Being extremely low on ATF will cause all sorts of problems. The torque converter is probably half full of air the way it is right now.

Why does Toyota do this crap? How hard could it be to include a damned dipstick?

I have never shied away from doing minor and major maintenance on my vehicles. But something is intimidating to me about having the transmission at specific temperature while adding oil. Sounds too unreliable haha. I like the simplicity of the dipstick and just having the vehicle up to operating temperature. Having the transmission temperature somewhere in the middle just feels unreliable.

The engineer that thought hiding the starter and oil filter on the 5.7L determined that leaving off the dipstick would save 15 cents.

I’m still used to old school. Drive the car around, pull back in the driveway on flat ground, engine running and check the level LOL use small funnel and fill as necessary.

With a truly sealed transmission the recommended sweet spot temps need to be followed. AT fluid will expand and contract. Transmissions with dipstiks aren't sealed. More convenient but good luck making 90K miles to first service like the sealed transmission.

My instinct would be to do this, fill cold and get up to temp, pull inspection plug to let excess bleed out and I would think that would work. Otherwise I would have my neighbors thinking I'm doing some Heisenberg shit in the front yard with the bunsen burners out.

The reason the vehicle needs to be running....at least for dipstick vehicles, is that the torque converter sucks up a quart or two of fluid when its spinning that it doesn't when its not.

ok , i went to the dealer and bought 4 qts of toyota WS fluid. Got the truck running for about 15 minutes , cycled through the gears while parked.
Pulled the check plug and drain plug, got maybe one quart out , but it looked clear and no smell or particles.
Replaced drain plug and pumped 2 qts into the fill plug, started the truck and checked the gears , all good no leaks.
Turned off truck and pulled the check plug and it pissed out a quarter of a quart before i got it back in place.
Thats the key - only pull the check plug when the truck is running.
OK - i started the truck again , pulled the check plug and added another quart and 1/2 until fluid started dribbling out of the check port.
installed check plug , installed fill plug and test drove.
    Night and day difference.
No hesitation , no stutters . Runs better than the day he bought it.
So , for $40 and some time ,now he can get the hell out of my driveway!
