i had this (perhaps crazy) plan to split my next 350k worth of driving miles between two vehicles: my tundra and a beater. Beater of choice was a 2004 grand Cherokee in decent condition. After replacing pretty much all of the wear parts on the Jeep, it still seemed like one thing after another kept failing. The last straw happened yesterday, when the transmission failed. I am now officially done with dumping money into this thing. So, I’m now wanting to know from the Tundra community: 1) who else uses a dedicated beater, and 2) what you drive as the beater. I’m wanting to get a sense of what you all believe is a decent low-cost vehicle to use so that my Tundra doesn’t rack up a lot of in-town mileage.

I use a Corolla- leased. Cheap, cheap to fuel, and I can beat on it without worry.

Stick to Toyota or Honda. I have bought good running corollas (2000-2002 models) for $1700-2800. Great AC, amazing MPG. Just make sure you don’t get the 3-speed auto.

Currently in ‘02 civic and love it. Replaced some suspension parts last weekend now it’s good to go. $20-25 to fill up and I did 375 miles mixed city/highway driving on my last tank (11gal).

We have a 2013 Scion Xb we bought mainly to train the kids to drive in. I sometimes take it to save on gas but find myself missing my truck just about every time I do.

Purchased a 99 Maxima that I paid 1500 bucks for from the original owner and put about 2 grand in it which I just recently gave to my daughter. Has 185,000 miles and is bullet proof. Highly recommend either the second or third gen Maximas as a beater car as well.

The theory is perfect, just not practical if it’s a Jeep. My beater is another Toyota, a 2005 4cyl Tacoma that’s got over 230K miles and still runs smooth. Getting around 25mpg.

I got a 94 Camry with 250k. It literally costs like $30 a month to operate it. Gas, insurance, everything included.

I’d really like one of these as a beater daily driver. With a five speed. C20022F0-DFBD-4E6A-B744-C140B290DE4F.jpg2B51405A-3332-40DF-87C0-3AD5D8A1B794.jpg

Update: the “solution” that was developed for me was that somebody would get the Mini Cooper that she always wanted, and I will drive her current vehicle as my DD. I suppose there are worse possible outcomes:

The word “beater” has been used a half dozen times in this thread and it’s stayed on topic. Not sure if I’m disappointed or impressed.

I've been considering adding a beater for the same reason. I know what I'll get if I do.....

The previous gen RAV4 was larger than the current model and you could get it with a 3.5 V6. Maybe a 2006 or so RAV4 with a 3.5.
