Just won a new CVA Wolf muzzleloader in a raffle, which I'm super excited about, and was wondering if there are any black powder experts in here...

Not an expert but I have been shooting/hunting with muzzleloaders for a while. I shoot flintlocks though and they are a little bit different than in-line guns. Congrats on the win.

My copy of a 1790s Bucks County Pennsylvania rifle.

What have you found that the wolf likes best when it comes to propellant and projectile choices?

I’ve got many years worth of successful elk hunting under Idaho’s muzzleloader-only rules: no sabots, loose powder, visible #11 ignition system, opens sites, etc, with a Traditions Pursuit NW edition.

Last year I hunted a “short range” season for elk and dialed in a newer muzzleloader for this purpose with 209 ignition, scope, sabots, etc. I used Blackhorn 209 powder and had real good luck with it. The gun’s a Knight .52 Cal that was given to me. It kind of an oddball as far as comparing loads to the rest of the world, but turns out it’s an excellent Elk gun!

But about the Blackhorn 209 powder:
It’s really easy to clean, very accurate, and very powerful. Of all of my smoke pole shooting, this stuff is definitely the most sensitive to charge size though. It made me sensitive too.

For my first time shooting this gun and sighting in a new scope, after using a laser bore sight to get it started, at 100 yards I was inside 1.5” on shots 4,5, & 6.

    For projectiles:
Because of the .52 caliber on my new gun, I’m pretty limited on projectile choices. I shot both Knight/Lehigh Bloodlines and Barnes Redhot’s on the sight-in day with positive results. I ended up getting my elk last year at ~180 yards with a 300 grain bloodline.

For my older, “Idaho-legal” Traditions .50 Cal, I’ve tried lots of full-bore projectiles with highly varying degrees of success. I’ve shot: TC maxiballs with huge variability in accuracy, Hornady Great Plains which had decent accuracy but drop off pretty quickly and were so hard to load in my gun that for field-loading they were a No-Go, and Powerbelts which shot fairly well but not excellent.

By far the best shooting (and killing!) full bore projectile I’ve shot with this setup was the Precision Muzzleloading Ultimate 1 HP spitzer. This thing was dead-on accurate, shot long and flat (for a muzzloader), and let me field-load like a ninja. Sadly these guys no longer manufacture their full- bore bullets. But it does seem that if a guy were shooting .45 or .50 sabots, Precision muzzleloading would be an excellent potential candidate. Last I looked, they only do muzzleloading, and they definitely put a lot of time into their bullets to make sure they’re right.

But after all of that being said, If you’re really interested in getting it dialed, I would strongly suggest hitting up the shooting and muzzleloader forums for the best discussions and ideas. There are guys that get way into shooting...even muzzleloader shooting. I primarily shoot to keep my freezer full.

Congrats on the new smoke pole! And good luck on the hunt.

I have a wolf as well, and used triple 7's with 250 grain powerbelts, but just recently switched to White Hots off a recommendation, but don't have enough rounds through it to make a judgement on them. The triple seven and powerbelts worked well though.

I got several deer with my brother's flintlock. Want one of my own - they're fun. That one is a beauty!

I have a TC triumph. Shot power belts for years and had some wonky experiences though. Moved to Blackhorn, magnum 209s, Barnes sabots at the 245gr and it's a tack driver.

Blackhorn is a bit different in how it measures. I use I think 100g out of a max of 120 (as measured by their volumetric tubes)

    Highly recommend it.

Thanks. It took 3 years to get it made. About 2x longer than the original quote, but worth the wait in the end.

About $2300. It's an interpretation of a late 1700 Buck's county Pennsylvania smoothrifle. I do 1812 historical reenactments as well as hunt with it. The original it was based on is a smoothrifle as well (smooth bore gun but designed as a rifle). It's got a .50cal 48" barrel.

    20190406_114634.jpg

    Gun it's based on.
