I figure I am in it this far, might as well get it done right. I just need to find a head gasket locally. It will probably be after market. At this point, I don’t care. I just want to put it all back together and see if the shims fixed the issue.

I thought you said this engine runs decent off idle with no misfires?

Yes, when I am driving it does not misfire. At low rpm or idle it misfires.

Methinks your valve lash is not your issue. But I've been wrong before: I once thought I was wrong but it turns out I was mistaken.

Well, I have the head off. The pistons look good. Anything else I should check?

Set your lash while you have the hade off. You still need to do the other hade.

Toyota gaskets are superior. But the surface needs to be perfectly straight since they’re MLS.

I put on brand new Toyota brand metal intake gaskets. I also did denso coil packs, denso spark plugs, and factory style injectors. (They were $100 a piece)

if this doesn’t fix it, I’ll have to set it on fire and collect the insurance money, but it won’t every much.

Is that an OEM belt? Do they actually mark it that way for simplicity? Wow.

Yup. Arrow out and line the marks up. Honestly you can ignore the marks on the engine and go purely off the belt. Rotate 2 revolutions and the Marks on the pulleys should line up with the engine marks

Should probably be mentioned here that you shouldn't be reusing head bolts either.

Unfortunately I didn’t plan on pulling the head so I was unprepared. The good news is the head bolts were only in the truck for about a month and they all looked fine. Hopefully they will be ok.

Definitely NOT the case for a lot of the older GM cars.

While you may be fine (stuff doesn't always go to the book) head bolts stretch when you tighten them that's what they are designed to do. They won't stretch again and apply the correct clamping force needed to seal.

Guess it's up to you to determine if you're ok with possibly having to do the head gasket on that side again if the bolts don't hold properly or waiting however long it would take to get your hands on another set.

Re-use of the head bolts is generally allowable per the factory service manual. There are lots of opinions on the matter, of course. Depending on the situation, I normally toss a new set in there just because they're cheap insurance, but I have re-used them in the past and they've done fine. I am probably on firm ground to say that ensuring that the bolt holes are thoroughly cleaned and chased out, and that the bolts are properly lubricated, and that all the gasket surfaces are properly cleaned and truly flat are crucial to having the head gasket job stand the test of time.

Well… I am officially done. I put it all back together. Started it up and only had misfires on cylinder 3. But it felt great. Very smooth idle. I took it for a drive and there were no misfires. I pulled off on the side of the road to update my logger display, put it in park and all the misfires are back on bank 1. When I rev the engine they go away. When I turn the ac on in park they go way down. I just don’t understand. I have an appointment Wednesday with a local small shop that I trust. I guess I am going to give it to them and see what they think. I am at a loss.

Chin up, you deserve an award, I'm sure most here would agree you did all that you could and them some more. I'm way impressed. Yes, let someone else take a look. At least I think you can tell the shop all you've' done and that will help rule things out. You are to be commended.

Hold that last thought… I let it idle for about 20 minutes while I was cleaning up my tools and it much better. I only see misfires on cylinder 3. Maybe the ECU needs time to figure it out?

You have been amazingly patient, persevered & done a heck of a job. I'd suggest giving it the weekend. Drive it. see what happens and go from there.

This at least is consistent as when the AC is on, the engine revs up slightly to compensate for the drag and this seems to be problem only at low idle.

    Also, you are amazing.
