Extra credit if you do a turndown after the muffler. I did a magnaflow knockoff on mine and ditched everything after if for a turndown. Mine was Rusty and it was less things to replace. If I ever do headers and a y pipe there won't be any more stock piping left.
I'd expect some pretty gnarly resonance from a flowmaster style muffler.

Keep all the tailpipe. Cut out the muffler and weld a stick of straight pipe in to fill the gap where the flowmaster goes. Turndown will drone like hell, especially with a flowmaster. (Been there, done that, cut it back off)

Keep all the pipe in tact and shoot that thing outside from under the truck.

You had more drone with the tailpipe off? I've never actually heard that on any vehicle before. I thought it was pretty normal for a turndown go produce less drone. I guess I got lucky on my last two trucks. My magnaflow knockoff barely drones at all. I did a helmholtz on it, but it was too long and actually whistled. Still need to chop it down and retry.

@KarmaKannon yup, had a flowmaster 40 and turn down right past the cab and it droned like hell. I couldn't keep my windows up on the freeway it was so bad, and I'm not sensitive to resonance or NVH.

I had kept the piping so I cut that thing off, put a Spintech Prostreet on (free so tried it) and ran about 2' of pipe from the Spintech to the old pipe to bridge the gap. No drone and sounds badass. When I ran a K&N tube kit it did hum around 2200 rpm but not badly, with stock airbox no drone.

I had a Mitsubishi Mighty Max with a turn down long ago and it droned as well. I figured it was because that one was dumped under the cab but I'll never dump a muffler again.

I have a magnaflow on my e250 work van with all the factory piping. It drones bad at 65. Granted, it doesnt have any sound deadening in the back, and a sparce interior up front. Sounds good though.

Forgive me of I am missing something. I've had a few late sodas... You tried the flowmaster with the tailpipe or just the spintech?

Never bothered adding pipe to the flowmaster, only to the Spintech. Both mufflers were free to me, at the time I wanted to see "what's behind door #2" and glad I did.

Gen 1 doesn’t need a muffler. I took mine out, had a straight pipe welded in. With the full OE tailpipe and no muffler it sounds very aggressive but has zero drone

I have a flowmaster 40 in place of my stock muffler and a straight pipe replacing the stock resonator. I love the sound. No drone. Infact i wanted it a little louder so i cut off the stock tail pipe where it comes down over the axle. Still sounds great and looks cleaner now.

A buddy of mine has an 01 with just the resonator and a turn down pipe. It drones and sounds like ass at highway speeds.

I forgot to mention that I ditched the resonator that was before the muffler. Really low drone and sounds good in my opinion. The factory muffler had a good in it and it had a lot of drone. I picked my truck up in the mountains and the drive home was rough with all the elevation changes.

Sawzall and clamps is another option. I highly recommend going to a muffler shop and just paying them $50 to do it.

On the resonator subject I had the resonator on with the flowy.

Started the Spintech with resonator on as well. I wanted it a little louder so cut the resonator out and that to me has been perfect.
