EDIT: Changed title and purpose of thread to track MPGs through the various upgrades and additions to my truck.

I know there are quite a few questions between the Hypertech Interceptor and the Bully Dog GT tuner when it comes to performance and MPGs. I ran with the HT for about 8 months and switched to the BD a couple months back all while logging my MPGs with both.

The results below would obviously vary between truck model, lift, tire size, accessories, driver, etc. My specs are as follows:

2015 Tundra TRD Pro Crewmax FFV
    Coachbuilder shims (2 each side)
Coachbuilder +2 shackles and Toytech AAL
    295 tires ~ 34.5"
    87 grade fuel
Driver with slightly heavy foot (even heavier when I drive along side a Raptor).

No tuner - according to the onboard MPG I was getting around 13 - 13.5 prior to either tuner installed.

    Hypertech - Lines 6 - 13 (in yellow). This was 90% city driving and averaged 14.7 - 14.9.

    BD City - Line 14 (in green) = 14.2

    BD Highway - Line 15 (in red) = 12.8 @ 80 mph average.

    86c59fa797ff850bf699f8e8d1f8abc7_9b831cc306fa048d97f148012e9c9e50c7bac103.jpg

12/2016 - Current tank I am averaging 14.8 with 75 city miles in with the BD

06/2017 - Updated mpgs. LT headers, BAmufflers and BD trail tune are highlighted in yellow

Nice write up. Any issues with the BD programmer and ECU. Any flashing lights on the dash? I have heard horror stories with other members and they almost always say FFV have added issues.

Haven't noticed any issues with FFV. Im a 2015 and I think they have most of the kinks worked out on the 2015 FFVs.. not sure about the 2016 and up. Haven't thrown a code yet since the BD install. I used to throw an MAF code every once in awhile with the HT, especially when towing.

Nice. Odd that you get better mileage on street vs highway. Keep up with the updates. I've been looking into a bd tuner. Do you definitely recommend a tuner? Does it really change the way it drives?

With the bigger tires I am most fuel efficient around 60 mph and then it diminishes pretty rapidly anything faster than that. The highway speed limits in AZ are 75 which means I'm cruising around 80 so not ideal for mpgs.

For the money I would recommend the BD since it is configurable. The HT is just a plug and play. Either one however will noticeably change the way the truck drives. Better shift points, holds gears a little longer and is more responsive. Kind of like driving in tow/haul mode.

Do you have an aftermarket CAI? Not a trd? I have heard that BullyDog will throw codes with after market CAI

Just popped in the Hypertech finally, we shall see if the dreaded MAF dtc ever pops up.

Here in AZ not high in altitude. I do a fair amount of towing and do head up north where elevations gets up to about 8500'.

Currently just using stock tune with all factory intake parts. I will drive around for a bit and slowly change parts as time goes on and see if any changes are felt/noticed.

The HT is known to throw the MAF code when towing. I tow a lot too and I used to just pull it when towing anything over 50 miles.

Thanks for the heads up, might ens up doing that. For now the towing is about 50-80mi round trip no elevation change. I do want to start heading north with our sand rail - might run into Some issues. I do want to see the behaviour prior to disconnecting it on those trips though, to get a decent idea of what and where my personal issues might lie with the unit.

Yeah I think elevation and climbing definitely play a factor. I'm down in Tucson and tow a 19' boat to Apache a half dozen times in the summer. Usually I get the code during the climb towards Globe. Then it would clear a couple days after getting back once I was into normal driving habits

I tried the economy tune for about a month and you will feel the difference in throttle response. I didn't like it to much so I went back to the performance tune.

@boardude , have you towed with the BD hooked up? Any codes thrown like the HT? Does the BD allow you to adjust your tire size? Lastly, don't tuners like the HT and BD void warranties? Any concerns about that?

I know a new law passed that makes it legal to add tunes (modify software) the dealership would have to prove that the tuner undoubtedly caused the damage to the vehicle.

I had to tow a coworkers broke a** Mustang from San Diego to 29 Palms and had the performence tune on and no codes were thrown, it about 4500lbs including the trailer, nothing super heavy, but had no issues tackling the hills going back to 29 Palms.

There is an option to adjust the speed, but I didn't see anything for the tire size, for the domestic vehicles the tuner can change the tire size but I don't think the tuner has that option for our tundras yet.

I dont think it voids any warranties because it doesn't completely overwrite the ecu files and can be uninstalled. However I would recommend uninstalling and removing prior to taking it into the dealer just in case they decide to flash the ecu for any updates/recalls. That could be bad news if they do that with the BD installed.

The BD tuner does have a speed calibrator but its only available for certain makes and models . I'm hoping one of their future updates will allow for this on the Tundras

If they do flash over the tune its about a $250 or so to have Bullydog unlock it for you.

    Hey Boardude,

I currently have a 2013 Tundra SR5 (Flex Fuel...blah blah) FLEX FUEL BLOWS, I mean what's the point????!!!! >>>>> Anywho... I recently got new larger AT tires from Pro Comp ( which messes up my MPG calculation in computer per tech at Toyota) It currently reads 12.0 MPG average and I spend 60 % on highway and 40% in town and back roads. I have been desperately looking for anything to help with MPG. I have installed a Spectre cold air intake and it already has Dual exhaust made by Flowmaster. Do you Think The Bully dog would help?? And if yes there is 2 of them... the GT and the MTX.....Whats the difference ???? Any thoughts are appreciated!! Thanks.

Updating with log from the past few months. The area in yellow is with the LT headers and BAmufflers installed and with the BD trail tune. I do tow a bit so you can see the dips where I do. My foot has also gotten heavier since the exhaust upgrade lol.

Damn, I reset my avg mileage meter whenever I get on the highway for long drives (out to PILs place) and I've gotten it to read 17.5mpg on the open road. Once I come back I always leave it (I live in the city) and eventually over the next couple of weeks it drops down to about 16.0mpg or so. Maybe I should actually manually check it.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
2007 Toyota Tundra Sr5 Crewmax TRD Off road 4x4 5.7L with 500 additional pounds of gear in it always. I only use 87 Octane gas (10% ethanol). I drive about 18 Miles City, 56 Miles highway everyday. I usually drive around 70-80MPH (on the highway). I average 13.7MPG.

When I was driving my "Gas-saver" 2005 Pontiac G6, I averaged 26.3 MPG. I drove the same route and with the same methodology.

I just added a dual exhaust setup with a muffler delete. I am still waiting to see what the mileage change is, if there is one.

I have a completely stock 2017 SR5, been looking at ways to improve fuel economy as I drive 100+ miles round trip on work days...I'm new to this subject so any information would be greatly appreciated.. I'm averaging 15.9 after 11,000 miles
