    Hey All,

Have had some recent developments in my life and had the opportunity to relocate from the Bay Area to Austin and after discussing with the wife, we decided it was the best thing for us and our 3 kids. It will be sad to leave our family and friends here, but we can’t afford this city and don’t like the way it is going.

So now we are in process of closing on a house in Round Rock.. Holly crap the market is insane, I guess we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.. it took awhile, but we were able to make something happen. Was just curious how many may be local and if ya’ll had any tips/suggestions of things to look into doing and getting ourselves acquainted with the area or doing with the kids (aged 2-6), as we will have pretty much no friends or family in the area.

Cheers and thanks for having us!

Welcome to Austin, you will love it here! I've lived here for 30 years, with no plans on leaving. I'm working right now, but when I get a chance this weekend I'll make a post for you

One place to see the entire Texas story from native people to the 21st century is the Bullock Museum in downtown Austin. It's not free. It's a little pricey, but not close to California admissions.

If you don't like the way things are going in Cali, be advised that Austin is decidedly purple (or maybe blue?). I have nothing on Round Rock, but it is in Williamson county. Williamson county has a reputation with local wags for dealing justice with a heavy hand; i.e. for having "hanging juries" (not to be confused with "hung juries"). :D

Welcome to Texas. Be a proud Texan, and learn who the "Twin Sisters" were.

awesome, truly thank you. This is the type of stuff I am looking for!

Is there anyplace within a reasonable distance to Offroad..? From what I have seen the one thing is that there seems to be a minimal amount of public land to get our trucks off of the pavement

EDIT: Also send out any favorite bars, restaurants, or food trucks!

    Of course!

Mule shoe is dirt roads and kinda fun in that respect. Hidden Falls will be your local Offroad park.
That’s the big bummer of Texas vs California, you aren’t going to find any place to just “leave the road”. It’s all private :(

This comment is 100% fair, I am expecting to receive a fair amount of grief as we make this transition from the locals.. I totally get it, just hoping once we get there my family can prove we aren’t there to try and change anything. Just enjoy life more without so many expenses and get our kids into some good public schools.

Welcome to Texas! I'm a life long Austin resident but live in Houston now. We still have our family home in Austin. Austin is definitely not the same city it was years ago.

You may get some grief and comments like that bc many from California (not all) will complain about how Cali is better than Texas. Or the food is much better in Cali. Or the weather is so much better in Cali. Texas sucks, Etc, etc... If California is so great then move back.

Again, I'm not against anyone from moving to Texas. I'm not trying to start a debate about which state is better. All have pros and cons. Just stating why there will be some people feeling the way they do about transplants. I welcome everyone, just get yourself acquainted and enjoy what Texas has to offer.

Sorry to get little off topic. But all good recommendations above. Also check out Zilker park and South Lamar or Congeess area. Lots of local restaurants. Round rock has excellent schools also. Again Welcome and Enjoy Austin!

Austin is nuts. The market I mean. :D I read that it is actually worse than Nashville, and homes here are still selling the day they list with multiple offers over asking price. Been that way since before we bought our current home here in 2015. I have friends who still own homes in Austin. They make a decent chunk of change just renting them out.

Regarding TX turning purple, the main reason is not people moving from CA and voting in the same politicians they’re fleeing. The main reason is younger people being educated a certain way which causes their votes to skew that way.

    Welcome to Texas..
I'm hoping you'll find people here a bit more friendly than California.

You might get a little teasing here and there, but as @jalam321 stated, don't come here telling everyone how much better California is.
Both states have their pros and cons I'm sure..

Sure you'll miss the ocean, but you're not that far from the Gulf of Mexico.
Also has other stated, Austin may not be that much different politically than where you're moving from.

When things get back opening up, there is plenty do with the kids as they grow up.
Tubing the river and Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels.
Fun attractions and things to do | New Braunfels, Texas (playinnewbraunfels.com)

Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio only about an hour or so away.
A day trip to Dallas, Galveston, or Waco.
Several towns around Austin to visit; Shiner, Fredericksburg, Gruene, Salado, etc..

Huge Premium outlet mall in San Marcos if the wife likes to shop.
You've have HEB grocery stores, wish we had them in Dallas.
I think Round Rock has just about everything you need as far as retail..

Research getting your LTC if you plan to carry or at least want the option to...
    TxDPS - Handgun Licensing (texas.gov)

Hope it works out for y'all.

Welcome to the area, I live in the Georgetown area! Round Rock is a booming area and my wife teaches in RRISD, so if you have any questions, reach out. Downtown RR has some good restaurants and a few decent bars. The square in Georgetown is a hot spot with really good restaurants and bars. Again, any questions, reach out!

Welcome, Round Rock and Austin area are pretty liberal, but definitely remember what you're leaving. I'm a native Texan and lived in SF for 11 years, but glad to be back in Dallas. Vote red for sure!

To do, go visit San Antonio, it's such an awesome place! Go visit the cave, hit Six Flags, lots to do down there. Stay at the Hill Country Marriott or La Cantera.

Welcome! I'm not gonna repeat what has already been said but...... we ask that you please not act like new Tundra owners in saying the following:
"Yay, gas is cheaper here but.... why can't i get 20 mpg while driving down TX-130"? You may get better mileage on IH35 though, you may not go faster than 45 mph due to the constant traffic.
As far as places to visit, a quick three hour drive will get you up north to DFW. Fort Worth Stockyards, Downtown Dallas, and don't forget the world's biggest tornado shelter, AT&T Stadium. (nothing touches down there)

    Welcome to Texas.

If you happen to go through Seguin on your way down to San Antonio, stop by ZDT's Amusement with the kiddos. It's a great amusement park for the money, but I may be biased since I worked there years ago (and you may see me across the street at my dad's shop from time to time). The Snake Farm in New Braunfels is a must for the kids imo. Highly recommend Enchanted Rock as Holden mentioned, and you HAVE to stop by Fredericksburg to take home some peaches, best around. Fredericksburg is also an awesome town, super dog friendly place if you have any doggos, and great restaurants and shops.

Not quite as friendly as you think it is here. Since I've moved to Texas from Socal, I've been victim to racism and have never had that happen in all 38 years of my life in California or Nevada! There are tons of nice people here, but best believe, I will have some guard up. The food is, eh. Bring as much Mexican food as you can, if you're into that. We only have Texmex which is way different that baja style Mexican food. All in all, I'll take the racists fucks over the assholez in California government! Btw, off roading and overlanding is totally different here...

Truly thank you everyone for the input! This is definitely a big move for us, but the wife and I couldn’t be more excited. Counting down the days until we can start out new life =).

@Ostrich thank you for the tips! Our 2 year old Black Lab is definitely cruising with and we will be looking to get her out places... def Italy going to have to find some lake or river access as she loves water more than land it seems haha.

@DRP82 thank you! My oldest will be starting at Forest Creek Elementary so definitely appreciate the help. How does your wife like teaching there? One of the reasons we chose the area was because of the school ratings, but of course have no actual first hand experience.

and to all else.. I hear ya, I am not moving with my nose in the air. Everyplace is different and has their own amazing qualities and faults.. my town is full of numerous asshats that I will be all too happy to leave behind.

We are just excited for the change, thank you again for all of your help and insight!
