So at the beginning of the year in January I took my wife to Alaska. We drove to Seward, Moose Pass, Whittier (That place was flipping nuts, that is a crazy story all in itself), Girdwood, Mantanuska, Palmer, and of course Anchorage. I thought I did pretty well driving considering I'm a Houston Boy. Out of a week of driving on the ice, only got into one hiccup on the highway where I couldn't stop sliding and pulled the emergency brake, spun around and stopped a foot away from the car in front of me. Was going about 55 and they just up and put a stop light in the middle of the highway..... Anyhow my wife and I loved it up there. I know there are some guys here that live up there. Just wanted to get some first hand input on where would be a good place for a family of 5 to settle down if we decided to pull the trigger. I work offshore, so I would have to be semi close to the airport and semi close to the industrial job market.

I would love to live there in warmer months, not so sure about the winter.
Incredible place, was there about 25 yrs ago in summer time. many places you mentioned.

Both my parents grew up on the Kenai Peninsula (Kenai & Nikiski) and my dad loved it, my mom didn’t mind it. I only lived there when I was really young and then for two years of high school so my perspective is limited. But the long, dark winters do get old fairly quickly. Of course there are activities to help get by (i used to like hopping on my snow machine/mobile in my driveway and going any direction I wanted). Also, the cost of just about everything is high (food, utilities, etc...). As far as location, I am biased, but would check out the Kenai/Soldotna area. Only a couple of hours drive to Anchorage, has a regional airport, not too far North, and has some reasonable amenities relatively close by. My dad and many other family members have/did work on offshore oil rigs or ones on the North Slope while living in the area.

I recently applied to a job that could send me to Juneau, but I’d much rather be in the Kenai area. Locals may say that Kenai is ‘dying’, but I’ve heard that from family members since the 90’s.

My daughter and son-in-law live in Wasilla, Alaska. My son-in-law works on the Alaska Pipe Line up in Prudhoe Bay. He works 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Been doing it for many years and he flies out of Anchorage which is about 60 miles away from Wasilla.

It looks like the best deals on nice houses are in Wasilla.

Yes, they get dividends on the oil.

Cost of living is high, but it's an amazing place - btw the dividend won't make up for the difference in the cost of fuel alone (oh yeah, you have 5 kids - it might!). Based on your parameters either the Valley (Palmer/Wasilla) or Fairbanks could work. Suggest you do some detailed research (cost of real estate, energy, medical, etc) before committing - lots of folk think they'll love it, but it takes the right kinda folk to make it here long term...just sayin.

True, that's one reason I wanted to go during the winter. I wanted to see how cold it could get, and just how miserable things could be.... there was a lot of room to get more miserable. Amazingly enough I left just a few days before the earthquake started. What is crazy is that I was reading a book there about the last big earthquake Anchorage had. Like I said...there was a lot of room to get more miserable.
