Thanks! Had your chat support confirm that as well this morning. I already sent the message to Morimoto. I'm just waiting on their response. I'm assuming it'll take a day for it to be seen. Glad to hear your 2nd unit is working out for you. Gives me some glimmer of hope. Also makes me wonder how or what is causing this to occur since it looks like I purchased mine back in spring of 2023 and who knows how long it's been like this since I never really looked at mine since install. After seeing the update on this thread, I decided to glance at mine when I was filling up this morning and, sure enough, half of my light looked like it had peeled.

 

Response received and replacement was ordered. I asked the question and they responded with the following:

"Unfortunately, there have not been any changes made to the light to prevent this from happening in the future."

Looks like I'll probably be trying to find either PPF or start thinking long term on a change.

I can't believe that they haven't corrected it. I have seen posts on this issue all the way back to 2023. I'll look at mine and see if I can come up with some PPF ideas. I know there is a spray clearcoat for plastics but I have no idea how to "treat" a new out of the box unit. I may have to take a trip to my local tint shop that does PPF and see what they say.

 

So im assuming they will just keep replacing under warranty until they fix this?
It would suck if the new replacement started peeling after a couple of months. Especially how hard they are to replace on these tundras sometimes

 

I hear you. I'm debating on whether or not to even install mine unless I can come up with a solution.

For anyone thats wondering.
I asked if the clear coat starts peeling on the new replacement again will they still replace it under warranty

This is they're response:

"Hi there,
We can't say if the same thing will happen with the new light. However, third brake lights come with a 5 year warranty so we will be able to replace it as long as it is still within the warranty time frame."

So as long it's still under the 5 year time period, they will keep replacing if it keeps happening.

 

This was my communication with them about 2 weeks ago.

 

Just throwing this out there because I’ve had good experience with other projects… what about a light sand and coating it with some spray 2k clear coat?

Thats what I was considering. Still lightly sand a brand new one just to give the spray a bonding surface? Does the 2K go on in several light misting coats so that it smooths out and doesn't look grainy?

 

Yea it needs something to grab on to. I’ve refinished a few headlights with a sand, one light coat, one heavy coat method and they come out clear as glass

I just revieved an email from morimoto claiming that they will be sending a new 3rd brake light claiming to have fixed the clear coat issue

 

I would not beleive it. I just got an email from them 2 weeks ago and they said that there were no fixes or changes regarding the clearcoat issues.

 

Uh oh, maybe a little deception from a reputable company. The plot thickens haha

 

Did they require you to ship the old one back first?

 

They give you 2 options
1. You pay for a new light and they'll give you a refund when they receive the defective one back
2. You can send the defective one back first, then they will send you the replacement

 

This makes me not even want to install mine unless I clearcoat it myself.

 

Literally ripped my morimoto fog lights off my Tacoma because they burned up. Powdercoating on pot metal failed, allowing water intrusion at vapor barrier patch. Failed under all street conditions in less than 3 years. Morimoto is not a reputable company, can't bring myself to trust Diode Dynamics either. OEM or high end lighting companies only for me.

For anyone running the 3rd brake light, have yall had issues with it coming loose.
I’ve had mine for a bit over a year and noticed yesterday it was loose. Tightened it back up but wondering if anyone else has noticed it.
