I have found out for sure that i have an LSD in my rear end, but as i do (or attempt) the rather gnarly Jeep trails in my area i want a locker. I think the way to go is the Harrop e-locker, but i think i will go with a lunchbox (auburn, nitro, powertrax etc) because it is 1/3 the price and based on what pretty much everyone says, they work well. So as i was researching what one to get, i saw that most say “for open carrier” Will these still fit if i have a lsd? Can I just take out the factory lsd and proceed or what? Do i need a special one or does this type of locker not work for factory lsd rear ends? Thanks any help is appreciated!

Likely need an open diff third member to install it. They usually aren't joking when they say it doesn't fit an lsd carrier.

Shouldn't need any special tools. The couple that I've done just required fitting the parts together until you find the angle of the dangle and cram it all in. A vice would be a big help and a torque wrench too. Then again I don't really remember the toyota pickup lunchbox locker I did so maybe it required something and I just blocked all memories. The d44 and Ford 8.8 I did were easy peasy.

You will need an 'open' diff carrier to use that style. The one with visible spider gears.

They do NOT fit into LSD rear end carriers.

Alright thanks for the in-tell. Replies are appreciated. Well, I guess no locker for me! Should i somehow acquire the funds, the Harrop e locker works with lsd right?

Harris replaces the carrie so it shouldn't matter what you had in before that. You could always try to find an open diff third member. Might even get one cheap that has the same gear ratio as you currently have.

Would it be a good idea to buy a locker for the front diff because it is open? (Just a lunchbox locker that is) Or is that a bad idea for some reason?

There was just a thread on that subject. I'm not familiar with the strengths of the front diff and axles in comparison to the spider gears. If the spiders are the weak link then a lunchbox locker might make sense. Your street driving also matters. Maybe driving in the snow with a front locker isn't a good idea and maybe it is. Maybe driving slow in snow with a front locker is alright.

An auto locker sure sounded good to me at first. May still be a decent option solely based on the one member who had them without issue.

I ended up with a Eaton selectable locker in front. One thing that just hit me... does a selectable locker also replace the spider gears like the auto lockers do?...

Yup. Its a whole carrier, your gear and (new?)bearings will be moved to the new carrier and that gets rid of the spiders.
