I'm headed to Big Sky in July. Anyone from there have any cool "non-touristy" stuff to do? The wife and I are probably gonna do some whitewater rafting, yellowstone, and possibly some flyfishing. Thanks for any hep!

Check out historic town of Fort Benton, establish around 1840's. It was the last stop, for the Missouri river boats, because of the Great Falls. Lewis & Clark stop there in 1805. The Lewis & Clark Memorial and the old Fort are there. It is called the birthplace of Montana. My family landed there in the 1890's. It's about 30 miles east of Great Falls Montana. Check out there web site.
Forbes names it as one of the fifteen" prettiest towns in America".

What part of the state are you headed to? I was stationed in Great Falls from 1992-1996. I loved it! @memario1214 is one of our Montana guys on here.

A week isn’t much time. If you’re in SW MT, Bannack State Park is pretty cool. So is Virginia City and Lewis and Clark Caverns.

In the western part of the state, take the Hiawatha trail on bicycles; you can rent the bicycles and headlamps on site. It’s a repurposed mountainous train rail route… the rails were removed and now it’s a moderately steep down hill bicycle run, including through old tunnels that turn… and no “nanny” rails on the outside— taking my son when he’d just learned to ride a bike was harrowing!, but it was an epic half-day adventure. Ends at a lodge where you can get hot chocolate or a drink.

So... Jellystone in July will not be a good time. I STRONGLY recommend seeing Yellowstone in your lifetime, but I also strongly advise against going in June/July/August. It will be an absolute nightmare.

I would say take a day and go see the Virginia City Players or Brewery Follies and do a ghost walk in Bannack (in whatever order but Bannack is cool when the sun starts to fall). It's Montana cool, and you can get tickets to ensure crowds are a little curbed.

Rafting is cool too, and July will be a good time to go! Also, not exclusive to MT, but ziplining in Big Sky is pretty cool last time I went.

If you've never been horseback riding... do it. You won't be doing anything crazy, and the trail will be pretty pedestrian I am sure, but I worked at a corral for a few years and then did a horseback ride in Moab last year with the GF. She loved it, and I certainly missed it. One tip though - If you do a horseback ride plan for like a 6AM start. Once that sun comes up it'll get warm in a hurry, and horses are hot critters. Riding midday is miserable.

I've ridden before but it was a LOOOOOOOONG time ago. Did the english style riding before I was 10 and have ridden sporatically (like every 8 or 9 years LOL). I really want to do some whitewater rafting. The first time we went, I got back spasms and couldn't do it. My wife was pissed:rofl:OH and do they have anything like the pink jeep tours?? I did that in Sedona and that was badass

You also might want to stop at the local brewery?

Also in the Meadows at the bottom of the hill.

I hear the locals like it too!
