Metal on metal noise

    When I'm going forward at slow speeds ( only time I can hear it ) and I turn full lock to the left I can hear a metal on metal noise rubbing on the front passenger wheel. It's faint but I can notice it and it is only at full lock left. No vibrations or anything and I checked the boots no rips tears cracks or anything leaking. Any ideas what this could be? Only 30000 miles and I haven't tried it at full lock right cause I just got to work. Any help would be appreciated.

    Check skid and UCA for rub marks. Use a grease pen to confirm.

    I've got this too...except more of a popping feel to it. Getting it checked out this weekend. Money's on the dust shield and brakes need replacing anyways.

    Not every time though...weird.

    That's what I thought. Exactly why I'm bringing it in to see what the deal is. Here's hoping they find it even with sporadic evidence.

    Could it be the steering stops? Mine does it to. So did my 1st gen, 16 yrs. 186k on it never figured out what it was. But never had anything break either.

    When I turn to full lock I hit the steering stop. It makes a little bit of noise but is not a problem or malfunction.

    I had a popping noise up front when I had the coilovers set too high. The compound angle acting on the CV joints was too great so I lowered the front end slightly and now it's gone. Why would a dust shield need to be replaced?

    Thanks for the help guys. I appreciate it. Like I said it's very faint and I can only hear it at full lock left with the radio off. If I back off a little I don't hear it anymore. Like I said too I haven't tried it full right but I will after work tomorrow

    The inside of the dust shield or through the rim on the outside where it wraps over the rotor?

    No CV's on mine. It's a 4x2. A dust shield may get damaged sometimes or get bent towards the rotor. Sometimes the rotor may get too warped and rub on the shield.

    Are you taking a hammer to your dust shield? It's tucked inside the wheel and shouldn't get damaged by driving. Steel doesn't really warp; especially not enough to contact the dust shield. Unless your heating your rotors over 500 C continuously steel won't creep that much, and even then it would more likely lead to cracking the metal rather than "warping" it. Most "warped" rotors simply have an uneven deposition of pad material.

    no hammers to shields over here.

    that's the best explanation I can come up with aside from maybe a tie rod or UCA ball joint, knuckle, etc......either way, I'm just hoping they can figure it out.

    So are you thinking that when I'm at full lock the dust shield is coming in contact with the inside of the rotor where I couldn't see without taking the wheel and rotor off? Or do you think it would be pushing that lip out and rubbing on the inside of the wheel? Also what would be the fix for this?

    Could be either. Best way to check is to have a buddy listen closely when your driving at full lock. If it's bent, just bend it back with the claw portion of a hammer or scewdriver.

    The dust shield could get bent when taking the wheel off or while putting it back on. But it would rub all the time. It pivots with the steering knuckle, so I doubt that is the problem. I used a grease pencil to see if my tires were rubbing on the uca. You just smear it on the area in question and drive the truck. Get it to do what you are trying to figure out. Then look to see if any has rubbed off and for transfer to other components. Red or yellow have good contrast on black.

    The steering stop is stationary to the frame. But the stop on the knuckle moves with the suspension. So if you are at full lock and the suspension cycles up or down. It could make some noise. That's normal and won't hurt anything.

    My bet is on the steering stops. Also whenever I hit full lock I always back off a tad. I don't like the sound the power steering makes when I do that. I think I once heard it wasn't good for it so I made it a habit to never do it. I think it has something to do with the fluid bypassing through the valve that is unnecessary wear and tear. I'm not 100% sure but I just don't do it. I know I had a 79 Toyota Corona that when you had the steering at full lock, and would hit any type of a bump, it made a horrible metal on metal sound. F that noise!

    This happened on my truck with 1000 miles on it a couple years back. The dust shield for the rotors/brakes bent and caused it to grind. Took it to a dealership in Washington but they couldn't find the issue even though the sound was there. They told me it was fine to drive back home to California and just check in with my local dealer. Local dealer couldn't find the issue until a second look. Plate was bent.

    Was the bolt loose, allowing your alignment to get out of whack? Old ford lca cam bolts are notorious for that. I can't keep my 68 cougar aligned very long and it makes a sound like that when I push it through tight corners or hit a pothole.

    The bolt was loose. Was maybe at 30 lb ft. I torqued it to 100. The cam and nut itself were ok. Much more driving and I'm sure the alignment would have been thrown off

    Yeah, I'm going to start checking the torque asap after every alignment. I had@lotsoftoys align mine and he found that the guy at firestone left one of the tie rod jam nuts loose. The dumbass also held the tie rod with channel locks or vice grips on the threads! There's a lot of dip shits out there working on cars.
