At what point are aftermarket parts and mods not taken in consideration as it apply to the asking price of a vehicle? In the market for 3rd gen and people are asking thousands over NADA and KBB because it may have upgraded wheels or suspension. My search is getting a little exhausting as i refuse to overpay.

If you are trading a truck in with mods, they have $0 value. The dealer will then turn around and jack up the price several thousand $$ for the same mods.

If you put your vehicle into the trade sites online stock and get a quote, go back and change it to mods. I did it with mine, and after I added suspension mods, the price dropped almost $3500.

Forgot to add....most used prices right now are the same as if not higher than a new one.

Private owners have pretty much adopted "high retail" asking prices for their used vehicles... they are asking what a used car dealer that offers financing would ask. Almost every used vehicle that I have looked at over the last 6 months or so is priced at least $2,000 above actual value.

the ridiculous thing is they know they're overpriced and will not budge on the price even with cash in hand. I know Tundra hold their value but damn people are taking it to the next level

You'll be hard pressed to find any sympathy in this forum. Along with us knowing how much the mods are worth, we also know that this 3rd Gen may be the last v8 they make and aren't gonna let them go but at a premium. I'm keeping all my stock parts for this reason. Hopefully the buyer doesn't notice a BMC down the road.

    Trying not to mod it
It's not just Tundras and it's not just recently. In 2017 I was shopping for a WRX, and the used prices were a joke. One idiot had 12,000 miles on it and was charging $3000 more than a brand new one because he had put in an exhaust, tune, and wheels. His warranty was toast for the power train because of the tune. Not sure he ever sold it.

They forget the general rule: any non factory mod isn't going to add value. The reason is because you shrink your pool of potential buyers with these mods. That means less demand and a lower price. Personalized mods are going to be hit or miss with buyers, so you can't charge people for your preferences. Prime example, @ElNopal has put a ton of work into customizing his truck. He's done it in a really unique way, and he's done an excellent job. Lots of people wouldn't like the things he's changed, so he couldn't very well go charging a premium for the very personalized mods he has added.

Sorry for picking on you, Matt. Your truck is just a prime example of a truck with quality work that wouldn't necessarily equal increased value on trade or sale. It's super memorable too!

Ditto on the used vehicle market being crazy. I got really lucky in the 2019 I bought and the dealer didn't know what they had. At the same time, I had some good karma because I sold my '10 Tundra to a wide-eyed 18 year old kid that always wanted a 4x4 pickup. I sold it for a really good deal too- way below book value. I didn't want to hassle, I just wanted to sell the truck.

You gotta find a seller like myself.

As far as aftermarket mods, they aren't worth squat. Nothing. Zilch. Null. In fact, most of the time it lowers the value of the vehicle because now you've alienated most buyers who just want a factory vehicle.

If you pay more for a truck because it has a lift kit, bigger wheels/tires, and an exhaust/tune, you got taken advantage of.

Trucks, cars, or even houses for that matter are only worth what someone is willing to pay...not what someone thinks it’s value is.

I just bought a used car from a private seller and the sellers were really proud of their car (it was in great condition) but they wanted way more than what it worth. I knew they were emotionally attached and frankly didn’t think they’d budge.

Long story short I got them to come down quite a bit - I wasn’t going to overpay their asking price and they needed to sell it more than I needed to buy it. They got a fair price.

It seems the market for new and used prices has certainly "popped up" in the past few months. I wouldn't chase it higher. Just remember, for 99% of people/buyers, a car or truck is a depreciating asset.

I’ve sold a lot of cars in my life and I was never sure why I would need to change my price when someone has “cash in hand.” In no way am I going to accept a personal check or monthly payments. If you aren’t planning to pay with cash or a cash equivalent, I just wouldn’t be interested in selling

I felt like I overpaid back in March for my ‘18 TRD offroad with 17k miles. I paid $36k for it and looking now at used prices for an ‘18, I feel like I did ok. I sure didn’t steal it but I’m comfortable with what I bought it for.

This! I'm a rare breed but I'll pay extra for a (nicely) modded truck. No where near what was put into it in parts cost and for sure no labor but let's be honest; I'm not leaving it stock. Might as well fire up excel and make the spreadsheet. I'm an idiot to buy a stock truck that I know I'm going to lift, wheels/tires, bumpers, armor, lights, color match etc. right away. I've built and sold too many to know that loss.

The only time it doesn't make sense is when the dealer is charging 3k for a $100 spacer "3" lift kit". They're just trying to help sell it on financing to someone who can't afford to lift their truck later...and it works.

If you're looking for a stock truck, just buy stock. If you're looking for a modded truck, your buyers market just got way smaller but so didn't the sellers market. Do the math on if it makes financial sense to pay a few $$ more for add ons you actually want. If you can't build it for the asking price and it's what you want then isn't it worth it to you?

Honestly, I won't by modded vehicles because I have sh:censored:t luck with used vehicles and I don't trust that the mods were done correctly. People are too dishonest. Every used car is always "like new, low miles, adult driven, must see, insert cliche sales pitch here"

Not to say I haven't spent an obscene amount of hours verifying and redoing things but since my labor is free and I enjoy that sort of thing, the parts cost is the main variable. Factor in wear and tear/prorate, shipping, powdercoat, lead times. That's how I justify it to myself but for sure not for everyone.

I don’t have a good track record with used cars either...I’ve gotten smarter over the years and if I ever entertain the idea of buying used I spend an enormous amount of time convincing myself the seller isn’t trying to dump a problem onto me.

I can see your reasoning. Honestly, if I had my brothers luck with cars, I'd never buy new. He'd fall in a shit house and come out smelling like a rose. I , to quote another member, would fall in a barrel of tits and come out sucking my thumb.

Yep, that truck with a 6” lift, 37” tires, and supercharger was only driven by a little old lady to go to church.

I can't believe the prices right now! I got a quote from Carvana to buy my '19 Tundra with 20k mi. for what I paid for it OTD 18 months ago. I am thinking of doing it and buying a beater until the new tundra comes out. It better have a 6.5' bed with the CM or I will have to go back to the less reliable brands!

Keep in mind if you're buying a vehicle with bigger than stock tires, the miles are higher than the odometer reads. Unless they recalibrated the speedo, of course.

Why WOULDN'T a private party list their car at or near what a dealership would? That's how value works. You don't get added value buying a used car from a dealership versus a private party. In fact, I would argue you usually lose value because at least with a private party, you have a better idea how the vehicle has been treated. When you buy from a used car lot, you have no idea what kind of person owned it before.

As for the financing, every time I sell private party, I welcome and encourage prospective buyers to seek out financing through a bank or credit union of their choice. Dealership financing is nothing special and does not equate to an added value.

In short, I always sell private party. I'm willing to deal with the hassle of listing the vehicle and fielding inquiries. By doing that, I can get a little more money for the vehicle as opposed to selling it to a dealership that has to then mark it up to make a profit themselves.

I've heard of things like this as well. A friend in NY can sell his 2019 dc limited at auction for more than he paid new!

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens to the used car market in the next few years. EVs and autonomous cars are gonna make the gas vehicle obsolete much faster than we think.
