Born and raised in Louisiana. Never once went to a parade. Never saw the point. Spent the day putting down supports for joists and new subfloors.

Lol. You don’t know New Orleans. Government is corrupt. Currently under investigation for misappropriation of hundreds of millions of FEMA money. Citizens of New Orleans see no financial benefit of Mardi Gras from tourism.

Funny how everybody local can care less about Mardi Gras, but everybody else thinks they’re missing something and wish they could go.

Mardi Gras is an aggravation for those that live here. Lol.

I will readily admit that I am jaded when it comes to Mardi Gras. As a LEO I worked the Quarter, Canal St and many of the main streets on the "uptown" parade route and trust me when I tell you that working a parade is vastly different than standing behind a barricade watching it pass you by. You see a whole new side of both local and tourist and how they act and what they will do for a 2 cent pair of plastic beads.

Its an experience. Thats the 1 thing ive failed to read on here. Whether you like it or not, everyone should go at least once, to experience it. Some like the crowd, music, lights and partying. Others, well youve read this thread.

Its certainly different now than it was 30 years ago. Growing up on the Westbank, we never had to cross the river to enjoy a "Good" parade. Now all the good parades run the same route. Having an abundance of family that still rides, and not being to go every year, i still like to go every few years. We went in 2016, and had a good time, took my wife and son for their 1st time. Granted we went the week before but were still able to enjoy the parades, atmosphere, and food.

I have some friends who have never been, and we are planning to go again next year. With all that being said, you do have to be careful and aware of what going on around you at all times. It is fun for kids and for adults the like. Again, it is at least worth the trip for the experience. Although, if you want to explore the city, dont go for Mardi Gras season.

I was telling my wife yesterday how much anxiety you guys must have working the parades. It’s basically a ticking bomb out there for some form of violence. Not a year has gone by that people haven’t been gunned down in a crowd or killed by drunk drivers. Thank you for your service, sir.

But as a man with a family and a lot to live for, going to those areas this time of year makes me too nervous because I don’t want to be part of that steadily increasing statistic.

We typically do the Metairie parades. Much more family oriented than New Orleans. Family Gras was nice this year as well. We had planned on going out on Mardi Gras day...but it was to cold.
