Semper Fi. Bust your butt every day and give 100%. You will get out of it what you put in it. Best thing I did - I needed the discipline to get me moving in the right life direction. Unlike any other service, once you earn the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, you become part of the strongest brotherhood.

Spend that 8 months wisely. Get a jump on everyone going in with you. Get together with some guys waiting to go. Gather at the recruiters office. Study up on Corps history. Go to a local range. A lot. Have someone yell at you while you are trying to sight in. Teach yourself how to spit shine leather and polish brass. Take long romantic hikes on the beach with 80lbs on your back wearing boots. Hit the gym.If you drink beer...quit a month before you ship out. Your not going to be having any for 3 months anyways. know your shit before you go. Once there don't deliberately stand out. Do your thing. The DI's notice things. Just do everything at 110% and never ever complain. Push your fellow platoon members when struggling. Be a leader and you just might end up series honorman like I did. You get free dress blues and can pretty much get the MOS you want if you have changed your mind. By the way.....the mere fact you ARE MARINE has a tendency to attract the finest from the opposite sex. A given.....oooh rahhh!!!
FYI.....we had a few cross overs from other branches who decided to join the few and the proud. They found out Marine boot camp was a bit different the first hour..heheh

Super! I made GS15, then went on to do my own think as a consultant and contractor. Retired from the Feds first, though. You are correct, the benefits are the best.

Here is what I love about the Marines.
They are the only branch that still teaches, Honor, History and Tradition.
First and foremost you are a Marine, then (insert MOS).

I was a Soldier and even I noticed those qualities.

Thanks for taking the leap of faith that I never did... Marines are the best, my dad was in the marines in the ‘80s. If you can get a job doing electrical there are a ton of jobs available when you get out. I work at a power plant and we have had quite a few ex Navy and Marines (mostly navy though) come thru and were very sharp.

    Congratulations Matt.

Kinda funny and impressive at the same time that you did this great leap of faith towards a solid future.

Funny in the fact you probably are the youngest member on this site, but make very mature decisions (and conduct yourself as so). I always liked your work ethic and outlook on the future. This just backs up my opinion on you.

Impressive in the fact you already see that a few things need to happen in the near future for life success.

I've been telling my nephews (and now great nephews) this for years, go do 20 years, come out with a college degree and benefits and experience that will last a lifetime and you're set for another 20 when you can really retire.

Exactly, I went in the USAF as a bomb loader, sounded cool to a 18 year old but sure ain't no call for it in the civilian world. If I had done something else I probably would have done 20 years.

Congrats on your choice to serve our Nation. Pick an MOS that transitions to something in the outside world. I was a Submarine Sonar Tech that became a phone guy. If MOS 7257 (Air Traffic Controller) interests you and you can get it, do so. The FAA is starving for Air Traffic Controllers. They hire around 1800 ATCs every year.

And once you get your EGA, make sure that any illness or long term pain goes in your medical record. You'll understand why later on.

Thank you everyone, im hitting the hay right now. The head marine for my office was talking to me and saying he is very impressed with how I am willing to work for such a title, as most people older than me want stuff to be handed to them. Just more of a realization of the work i have put in, and will continue to put in not only for myself but for my country. Have a great night everyone, will update with pictures hopefully tomorrow

Huge decision! Thank you for your future service and making the decision to serve this great nation!

I never went that path, but several in my family did including my Dad and my father in law. Both Navy men.

Hope to buy you a beer someday. Thank friend!
