    If you get one year of college in before you show up at boot you can graduate as a LCpl like I did.

    Edit.....actually I got promoted to LCpl about a month after boot. Took awhile to get the paperwork through and approved. More $$$ same amount of BS..hahaha

    Aviation all the way! But do yourself a solid and avoid jets lol you never get to fly on those things and they are annoying as f&$@. Skid’s or 53’s!! I was an Aviation Electrician then a maintenance controller. I still have friends in the 53 community.

    Congrats Matt! As many have said make sure you pick an MOS that you want and feel will make a future for you! Don’t let the recruiter talk you into something that you don’t really want! Again congrats!! And make sure you don’t blow your pay in Tijuana like I did!:anonymous:

    Semper Fi.

    Best decision that I ever made. USMC 110% got me where I am today. I enlisted 3 days before my orientation at University of Rhode Island. I knew that I needed something different, I busted my ass for 4 years of high school and wasn't ready to do it for another 4.

    Just remember whatever situation you are in, it's always temporary. Make the best of everything and get good at adapting.

    I've been out for 11 years. The most loyal friends were made in those short 4 years.

    Make it a point to select an MOS that you can use when you get out. Take the highest priority job you can. Logistics, communication, engineers....I was a heavy equipment mechanic attached to an engineer battalion, I was afforded the opportunity to attend some amazing training because of that.

    Oorah brother! No greater honor then being a Marine! Just stay away from the crayons :) I spent 4 years in Marine ROTC and then joined the Army after the books. If I could go back I would have made a different decision. Chin up, Boots Shined, Irish Pennants melted. I wasn't the brightest cookie in the jar but I did good. Whether you decide to stay in or 4 years is enough. If you decide you have given enough to God and Country and the Core get in with the brotherhood. Join a lineman climbing school and do not look back. 5 years and your a journeyman and you have a career that gives you the adrenaline rush just like in the core. Stay strong brother

    You’ll be a Gunny!!! That means you will be a shooting shooting marine. Yeehhaaah!:infantry:The marines was my second choice behind the Air Force. But, neither had the jobs (pimping) that I wanted, so, I ended up in the Army. The very best branch of our military and the best decision that I have ever made as a kid.

    There are lots of stuff to do today in our military. Many of these jobs never existed when I signed up back in the day. I’m trying to get my teenage son to sign up to fly drones. Or, he may be able to be one of the first signees for the soon to be created Space Force.

    On a serious note, kid, thanks for signing up to serve and protect your country. I certainly wish that there are more kids like you in this world. Good luck and all the very best for you in your future endeavors :hattip:

    Thank you all! Kids my age really are immature. The first thing i told my Recruiter was that i wanted to be sure my retirement was good and that i wanted to set that up asap, luckily that was already in the plan. Got to think about times when you wont be able to work and beyond!!

    Do it as a sideline. Way better to be a Marine who can weld than a welder who's not a Marine. :oldglory: :canada:

    Contribute to the TSP as soon as possible. When you're out get a federal job ASAP. Best benefits package in the free world, TSP transfers over, buy back your time in toward FERS.

    @OBXTundra You are correct. We army soldiers do go into bed after the Marines do. We have to make sure that the Marines are all tucked in and fast asleep before we go into sleep for the night. :).

    Congrats...Enjoy it. I did the same switched from PD to USMC Infantry in 2003.. 4 years has quickly turned into 15. 6 deployments to Iraq and Afghan. Drill instructor and now mentoring the future Navy/Marine officers. Its been a blast and cant wait to finish these last 5 years.

    @OBXTundra

    It sounds like you’re a Civil Servant? Congrats on all your careers. I followed the very same career path. I did high school, to college/reserve, to Federal Government, to self employed. Like I said earlier, joining the military was the very best decision that I have ever made in my life.

    @Matty4wd

    You’ve decided to embark on a career path that will bring you adventures and great rewards. It takes a real man to do what you’ve decided to do. Keep your head firmly on your body and you will accomplish remarkable things. Enjoy your time in the Marines and your life as you grow in wisdom, strength, and honor. If there is anything that you may need as a Marine, feel free to let me know. Godspeed!:hattip:

    Thank you so much. All these nice words from everyone makes me more and more excited, its gonna be a long 8 months of waiting to ship out. That just give me more time to prepare myself for the challenges i will be facing and improve mentally and physically more than what i already am.

    Honestly I couldnt see myself doing anything else. But then again it all depends what you look to do and beyond. I say that because while Infantry has been amazing in so many ways it was also great at keeping me deployed..in the field or in a school. Which in turn meant I didnt spend alot of time at home. At one point in my first 4 years I had almost more time in Iraq then I did the states. Most will say that Infantry doesnt set you up for a career outside the military other than corrections however the leadership skills you obtain will be your selling feature. I say that because honestly I think that is the biggest asset that you must learn innorder to be truly succesful in the MOS. If you are looking for a more technical job then seek something that easily transpires into something outside the USMC. Many times aviation mechs etc.. get special school that can often lead to 6 figure offers after 4 or 5 years of service. Lockheed and Boeing love the aviation guys. If you want some other info hit me up

    Correct. I'm on that same career path. My job is very rewarding. I will stick with this indefinitely, the work environment, pay, and benefits won't be found anywhere else.

    I could potentially see myself going self-employed as a consultant/project manager, but that would be 8-10 years down the road. I could potentially increase my income, but I would be leaving behind the health benefits, TSP, and FERS. The math would need to work out.
