Looking for 2001 radio info

My 2001 AC originally came with the Deluxe 3in1 (6 speakers) radio package. Anyone maybe have access to a parts manual that might identify the exact model number of that radio? A previous owner replaced it with a cheap Dual touch screen (that doesn't work) and I prefer to return it to original but I understand not all the radios accept the same harness plugs so I'm trying to save myself some grief. Thanks.

 

You need to look behind the dash and see if you have the OEM amp or not.

That section of the thread has links to other threads that'll show you the normal amp locations, where the amp would be, what it will look like in your earlier model.

You also need to check all your harnesses to make sure they're intact. The PO who installed the Dual head unit would've basically unplugged the two connectors going into the factory amp behind the dash, and teed off those with an adapter harness.

If you don't have the OEM amp anymore, you'll need both a replacement OEM amp AND a replacement OEM radio.

But get back to us on whether you have the OEM amp still in there. If you do, confirm the harnesses haven't been cut.

 

Preparing to view the carnage…I hate hacks who cut OEM harnesses. There’s a special place in hell for them.

@CC80guy shouldn't buy these parts without first checking what harnesses he has in his dash, and checking whether the OEM amp is intact or not.

Radio (Tape/CD): 86120-0C020 or 86120-0C030
Amp (if used): 86280-0C010

The wiring for '00-'02 (maybe '03 also) 6-speaker trucks with the OEM amp in the dash is typically like this:

Speakers and power come up into the dash separately and plug into the amp on two different harnesses, exactly these here, with these exact wire colors:

The amp, part number 86280-0C010, then has a pigtail coming off it that feeds the OEM head unit with power, and also pulls sound output from the radio to push the speakers, this is an actual picture of the OEM amp part here, notice the two white ports on the bottom where those harnesses above plug into it:

The radio itself, I believe it's part number 86120-0C020 if you had the tape/CD premium (but non-JBL!) with amp, and 86120-0C030 without the amp (don't quote me on this). The deck was pretty basic, just a box that accepted the pigtail off the amp in the back. This radio was used on several Toyota models, and it has multiple plug-ins at the rear, some of which don't get used on the Tundra, or get used if there isn't a factory amp installed. I say this because your wiring may vary, and this is exactly why we need OP to show us what he's got inside his dash so we can give him valid info.

The 86120-0C020 is the 1st pic here (w/amp, I think), and 86120-0C030 is the 2nd (no amp, I think). I may have the amp vs. no-amp backwards. Note these both have matching harness inputs in the top-right corner. The 2nd input is different. A close-up picture of what @CC80guy has in his dash would help understand what he needs.

OK, I ripped the bezel out and removed the after market radio. There is no separate amp in the dash nor under the back seat and no indication there ever was. Fortunately the PO did not hack the harness, he made a conversion harness adapter so the factory plugs are intact. However, these 2 plugs appear to fit the 2 sockets on the left of the 86120-0C020 pictured above and not the 030. That would seem to indicate a radio with a separate amp (ugh!). So after pricing things I think I will opt to just replace the flat screen radio and it's non-operating touch screen with a working touch screen radio, at least for now; plug & play.

 

I think you have the right idea. But I'd just add something, I think you're wrong about needing the amp. This is the plug at the back of the 86120-0C020 on the top half, and the plug on the amp 86280-0C010 on the bottom half of the pic (read more text below this pic):

Remember, Toyota makes these units as "universal" as possible, i.e. they'll accept inputs in a couple of different ways, depending whether the vehicle has an amp from the factory, or not.

Look at the upper half of that pic, the radio. I'm fairly certain the top-right input on the OEM head unit is for low-level input to/from the amp, if equipped (i.e. it's putting out a low-level speaker output). I believe the lower-left input is for straight-up powering the OEM speakers (i.e. it's putting out a high-level speaker output). Don't quote me on this, but those connectors look identical, so I'm fairly certain you could just go pick up a 86120-0C020 head unit and plop it on those connections. But you'll lose the power an amp would provide.

You'd be better off going with something outputting modern power, these OEM head units don't push a lot of power, they're 20 year old tech at this point. *AND* you'd need to make sure the aftermarket unit your PO installed still has the metal ears for the OEM radio install.

But don't sell yourself short - you can probably find a junkyard near you with this radio, or even hit fleaBay and maybe find a 86120-0C020 head unit on the cheap. Worst you'd be out is $20-30 I'm guessing. I did a small lookup, it appears some (not all, just some trim levels will have) other vehicles had this radio:

• '97-'01 Camry
• '99-'03 Sequoia
• '99-'03 Sienna

 

So if you're good with an aftermarket unit you should be set. You can either order another adapter harness for cheap ($5) or just cut off before the splices and reuse the one you have. I do believe your truck at one time had an amp but it has been either removed or just disconnected. Few more pictures of the back of your radio and all the associated harnesses wouldn't hurt but I think you're on the right track.

Use adapters and use posi products to connect wires. Posi products can be reused and you won't have to shorten wires by cutting.

Put the new touchscreen radio in this morning and it's working really nice. It's a lot more sensitive than the previous unit and certainly moreso than the factory unit in my 4Runner. If it stays depends on how it holds up. Time will tell. This is a shot of it before I set it up so the time and date are wrong.

 

What model head unit is that you installed?

 

Looks strangely similar to one of the $30-40 generics off scAmazon. They come with all kinds of branding. Camecho, Podofo, Hikity, Leadfan, Naifay, PLZ, KUNFINE, and a dozen other fabricated, bullshit names.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure it's a variation of this one, that keeps changing names, because the company that sells them closes their store every 3-6 months to avoid warranty claims. I'd rather have the BOSS unit @BluegrapeVr6 is rocking in his truck for a few more bones and call it a day knowing I have a legitimate, cheaper brand to support the product, and be held accountable if it burns my truck down.

Yeah it has Android Auto as well as Apple Carplay. Does mirroring also. Just an inexpensive Chinese unit off of Amazon. Just wanted something to get it going until I decide what the permanent fix, if any, will be.

I’ve seen units from Dual and Boss at Advanced and Crutchfield for around $200. Even have wireless car play. Wonder if they are any good?

 

Dual is typically better quality in my very old experience (they may be the same company these days for all I know). But seriously, when you consider that you can score the Alpine iLX units as cheap as $250-275 during sales, it almost seems stupid to buy any of the cheap garbage brands.

 

My bad I got confused. I thought you were the person talking about trying to fit a second gen radio in a first Gen Tundy and I thought that's what that radio was. My bad. Carry on. Lol

 

I grabbed a Nakamichi unit from Woot that had wireless AA. Tried it out and went back to my Kenwood double din. I kept the Nakamichi. Gonna make me a portable boom box with it.

 

The only aftermarket receiver I ever had was an Alpine that some a$$hat tore my dash apart to boost at a movie theater in Vegas 40 years ago. It was a great sounding unit.

I remember Dual made decent turntables in the 70s.

 

Dual is what I ripped out, the touchscreen went phtttt. FWIW the back of the Inex is identical in virtually every way to the Dual I removed right down to the plug socket. Kinda makes you think they came out of the same factory.

I had a Dual double-DIN touch-screen head unit in my Tacoma for maybe a year, and it was the biggest piece of shit ever! It wasn't a piece of shit because it was unreliable. It worked fine. The biggest issue was that the USB port was useless for anything other than charging and I could not control my iPod through the touch screen, and the other issue was that the backlight didn't change. My 2010 Taco has orange dash lights, and the Dual was blue. I bought a Pioneer and never looked back. My friend and former teacher's daughter wanted GPS and a backup camera in her 2010 Subaru Forester, so I gifted the Dual to her daughter and even installed it. The daughter got a new car, and the Subaru was sold to Carvana with the Dual still installed. My friend has the exact same model of Dual unit that I had in my truck installed in his 2004 Lincoln Town Car and it works fine 7 years later, but he does not own an iPod and exclusively uses Bluetooth to stream music from his Android phone...

 

Thanks for the headsup but this touch screen is growing on me, so many more options than the OEM unit (like Carplay and USB), so I think I'm going to stick with it.
