Longtime lurker here. Have been in the market for a first gen 4-wheel drive Tundra with sub-100k mileage for the last couple of years.

That Craigslist alert finally paid off. Picked up a 2001 AC Limited 4x4 with just over 40k miles and a color-matched Leer cap/camper over a Rhino-lined bed. Was an older gentleman's secondary vehicle and, for a 20-plus year old vehicle, is in pretty solid shape other than the clear coat suffering from many years of being parked in a very sunny climate; hood and roof were repainted by either Maaco or some DIY'er who did a solid job with the paint and clear but didn't do a great job with masking tape, so I have a date with a razor blade and something black for the trim. (Professional Hand Model rattle-canned Rustoleum Bed Liner on his??) Other than hood and roof paint, everything else seems to be factory original, down to the shocks, tires, etc. (haven't run a CarFax yet to see what services have been done, but it still had the sticker and the last engine oil change was in 2019).

In the meantime, have a growing to-do list of everything from nice-to-haves like rear window latch pivots (broken instantly by one of my curious kids!) and new head unit with hands-free calling and a backup camera (OEM 6-disc changer ate some CDs and is throwing Err 6 code and tailgate latch is broken so going to replace and put the camera there), to more serious neglect like both CV axles throwing grease, treating minor surface rust on frame, and who knows what else.

    See you all around.

Welcome aboard! That low mileage is a double edged sword. Many things just have the 22 years and 40k miles on them, which is good. Many things have not been used regularly used to keep them lubricated. Seals dry out, non-actuated actuators get corrosion and seize up from dis-use (like the 4wd system). Hasn't had an oil change for 3-4 years? Warning sign. I would go over the truck with a fine toothed comb and above all, make sure the timing belt has been changed within the last 9 years. Next on the list is lower ball joints. If you read around on the threads here, you will see both of these things being beaten to death, that's because they are both catastrophic failure items. After that, check the age of the tires including the spare, older than 5 years may be worth replacement. Sunny climate sounds like not the salt belt, so hopefully the frame is in good shape. Then, enjoy your new to you truck!
