I’ve been waiting to take delivery of a new Tundra (Limited crew max) and for the past month and a half the dealership has been putting me off and putting me off, two more weeks, three more weeks, could be any day etc— Today they told me They don’t have a date but the soonest it would be here is early next month.

I asked them if they had anything else available or inbound because we’ve got a beach trip coming up at the end of this month with plans to go out on the sand in the Tundra. The salesman mentioned they have a 2019 Tundra TRD Pro… Would I be crazy to cancel the existing order and take the preowned TRD Pro (27k miles, $55k)

Under ordinary circumstances, $55k would be high. I bought a 2019 Pro new for $54k. But in the current climate, that may not be a terrible deal if it’s in perfect condition. It depends on where you live. In South GA, that would be high and I would not take that deal.

Go look at it. If you don't like it, stick with your order. Manufacturers are hurting for the electronic chips that are used, it's out of their hands. Amend your trip slightly somehow, don't cancel it just because you can't drive a new truck on the beach.

I’m right there with you on the manufacture issue but the Limited (truck in order) was complete before I signed and is apparently sitting up in Annapolis MD waiting some undetermined time for necessary repairs… of course my imagination is running wild and they won’t give me any details on what is wrong with it.

That depends on how badly you want to pay new truck prices for a 2 year old truck with 27k on it.

Repairs on a new truck? I would demand more answers. Rent a vehicle for your trip.

My perspective would be to wait on the new ride. I think I would also want whatever documentation you can talk them into getting for you regarding said repairs. It's a drag not knowing.

This month may be good since its their second quarter for sales numbers. It may not make a difference in the current climate with all the shortages impacting the automotive industry.

If it were me, I’d open up the search to nearby states and look for a new truck. Paying too much for a used truck is a short term solution to a long term problem. I’d hate myself after the trip.

I’d rather pay MSRP for a new vehicle than almost-MSRP for a used rig.

Where are you at OP? New truck is in MD for repairs? I wouldn't even want that truck. Truck couldn't even make it from Texas to your area without needing repairs is a red flag.

If I were you I'd go look at the pro. Then negotiate if you like it. I definitely wouldn't be paying MSRP for used. I paid 48.5k for mine brand new. I know demand is there, but if some other sucker wants to pay over inflated prices let them. Be patient. It took me 9 months to get my pro for the price I paid vs what they wanted to sell it for.

I agree on this one. The dealer knows exactly what’s wrong with it, and probably knows when to expect it. These guys don’t just fumble around blindly without knowing what’s going on with trucks they ordered. If they aren’t transparent with you, then walk and go somewhere else.
There’s trucks to be had if you don’t mind traveling. There’s a brand new pro on the lot I just left. Sticker on it is 58k. I’d fly here to Texas and drive that back before I’d buy a used one for a 3k difference.

I’m around the DC area, I had a dealer in Richmond VA do a search and there’s basically nothing available in a 250 mi radius. Super frustrating!

See above quote. Search wide and far. Fly somewhere to pick it up, drive it home. Make sure you hash out negotiations before traveling. And it needs to be in an email you can revert back to. I finally got the price I wanted and went to sign for my pro. Paperwork had wrong price. Sales guy said who gave you that price. I showed him the email and said you did, fix the issue or I'm gone. New paperwork was printed out with the correct price we negotiated for.

I know it's never that easy with life's schedule. But if it's doable it's a great option to travel and get a better deal.

Did you already "buy" the incoming truck? And it needs repairs? I'd be all over them asking what repairs and wth happened. No way I'd buy a new truck already damaged. I'd look further out, fly there and drive back if need be.

I drove four hours each way to get my Platinum. It was actually pretty nice driving a brand new truck on a long trip right off the bat.

I had to drive mine 100 miles back home. I agree it was nice to be able to do that. Good enough time to get adjusted to new truck. Going from stock SR5 to TRD Pro was crazy. The suspension difference was more than I was expecting.

Just a quick search shows a good bit of options in Pennsylvania. Every lot I checked had at least one Limited in stock.

I do not think they can sell a "new" truck that needs repairs. If the truck went from TX to MD and is now damaged then that reeks of body damage (imagination runs wild - fell off transport; ramps of transport fell on bed; another vehicle ran into it - you get the idea). A repaired vehicle is not a new vehicle. Dealer should find a replacement new vehicle for you.
I join with the others who say fly to where one is and drive it home. (And rent for vacation if needed. Do not let vacation plans pressure you into doing something stupid.)

Unless I'm actually needing my truck for said vacation I always rent a vehicle. No point in putting thousands of miles on your vehicle when you can rent one for a couple hundred or less if you just get a basic economy car. That's always been my thinking on it

Come to San Antonio. Red McCombs Toyota about 10 miles from the airport is showing 2 limited's and 1 1794 on the lot. There are 5-6 dealers in town so likely more. Also San Marcos about 40 minutes up the interstate is showing limiteds, platinums and 1794 on the lot.
