locking gas cap frozen

Maybe I'm the last to know, but just a word of caution if you live in a cold climate and you've added a locking gas cap to your Tundra, like the

$17 Stant 10504 Stant Regular Locking Fuel Cap, black

Stant 10504 that I put on mine. I sprayed a little silicon lube in the key hole to try to avoid this, but after washing my truck last week the lock was completely frozen when I went to fill up today. I usually fill it whenever it's below 1/2 full, so no problem for me after warming it a little at home. Just hoping no one gets caught unable to fill with an empty tank. Looks like it's back to the original cap for the winter, which is only 5 more months here.

 

They are a little stiff to open even in hot weather!

 

I remember hot weather...

Mine was really stiff, too, until I gave it that first little shot of silicon. Then it worked great!

I'm hoping the vandals are too busy trying to stay warm this winter to bother my truck.

 

These trucks can't have fuel siphoned from them because they have a baffle or something in the tank, so unless you're worried about someone putting something in your tank I wouldn't worry with a locking gas cap.

 

I have one of those Stants and so far no ECU code or check engine light as some complain ...
I sprayed some WD-40 in there. Silicon lube maybe a better idea but I've had good luck with WD-40 even on frozen locks.

 

If I felt a need for increased security I would get this

 

I'm not a fan of the external locking gas door, but I wonder if those locks freeze after a winter wash. With all of the salt on the roads here, an occasional wash in the winter is necessary.

And I'm not worried about anyone siphoning my gas.
