I am approaching 30K on my truck quickly which means my free oil changes are up and I have the 30K service due in the next couple weeks.

The dealer I bought my truck from offers a lifetime powertrain warranty if I get all scheduled service/miant. performed there or any other licensed Toyota dealer. I have always been a DIY kind of person when it comes to my vehicles but the warranty they offer is intriguing to me. I have no idea how long I will keep the truck. Probably until year 2 of a redesign but who knows.

What says the Tundras crew? DIY or pay for service? I guess ultimately me paying for the service is me paying for an extended warranty, just not sure it's worth it or needed.

From my experience, lifetime warranties are bunk. Too many easy outs.

Do they have a printed schedule of all the services that’s going to be required with the cost? If you decide to do this, I would get that in writing.

    Yes...cliff notes version.
    $400 every 30K miles
    $110 every 5K miles

So if I put 100K on this thing it would cost me $2,520....Probably cost me less than half that (haven't done the math on that yet) doing it all on my own using quality synthetics.

So that’s about $350 every 10k miles? Hmmmmm... I’d probably do it if I trusted that dealership to do quality work. It’ll pay for itself when the cam tower eventually leaks and all that service would’ve been free.

Good call on the cam tower leak...kinda forgot about that. Your math is right on. It would cost averaged out $180 every 5K miles or $360 every 10.

I’d probably pass on it if I were younger, but I just don’t feel like changing oil and stuff anymore. Plus... you know who to blame if anything goes wrong.

I am 62 and still working, and I do my own maintenance. Disposing of used oil is easy for me. Auto Zone is maybe 2 minutes out of the way when I go to grocery store. I spend more time getting truck serviced at dealer then DIY. Wal Mart is an easy off easy on IH for me and I always need other stuff so I just get fluids there and filters online.

What are they charging for the warranty? If its free and you don't want to change your own oil anyway, it seems like a no brainer. Otherwise the decision is a little tougher.

Free in the fact that it only costs me the service...no other fees attached. I really don't mind working on my own truck and always have but the warranty has me thinking otherwise.

Yeah. If I trusted them I'd be on that like a dog on a 3-legged cat. I hate doing oil changes.

I would jump on it if you feel comfortable.

Cam Tower, Front Differential, AIP hasn’t been much of an issue in 3rd gens. Right before I sold my Tundra, the service department offered another 100000 mile warranty for 2800.00 (truck would be at 200k miles), if you want to put a price tag to it.

Keep in mind that you are still under the 5/60 powertrain warranty from Toyota, that in itself would be a good enough reason to keep getting it serviced at the dealer. Honestly, you really don't save that much by doing it yourself and you don't have the mess in your garage. Maybe I am just lazy.

I also have a free lifetime powertrain warranty from the dealer (actually it is from Zurich), I read the fine print in the contract and it covers everything the 5/60 covers with 0 deductible.
