Looks like an expensive light bar mount to me. Doesn't look like it'll hold anything else other than that.

Not my style. When I wasn't sure if my spare was going to fit underneath the bed I started laying out a chase rack in CAD. The SDHQ chase rack is more my style.

Kinda my thoughts. Also looks heavy AF.

If you’re looking for a chase rack, @sdhq_offroad just announced their dual tire one with jack, maxtrax and fuel provisions.

I do remember seeing someone make a legit baja style chase rack for our trucks, but I can't remember who that is.

I’m not looking. I was just interested in what was out there.

If I’m not mistaken I think @LibertySand made a rack that was sweet, but not anything like this rack posted. It was more for dual spare and gear

That ADD "rack" is 3 grand!!! That's nuts!

These are what I consider real chase racks.

    The one I use: IMG_8712.jpg

It's hold 4-37" tires, nitrogen bottle and has mounts for lights.

    But that's me.

The SDHQ on looks really nice and well thought out from what I've seen.

I like the old 80s chase racks. Wouldn't mind seeing one on a Tundra@Baja Mike that last pic is a nice one, who makes that?

This is what I was referring to above. I think they look neat. My only concern is, that's a ton of weight up high. I like SDHQs rack better for that purpose. Creating a giant moment arm with that weight swinging about willy nilly up there.

No idea. A lot of teams make their own racks. Our team has a guy who used to help prep the cars make them. He opened up his own fab shop and is constantly busy. The main fabricator on the team used to make them, but it's just too time consuming for him to do everything.

The roof over racks can take a lot of weight if it's designed properly. Nine time out of ten light weight gear is stored up there to make room for heavy stuff in the bed. Clothing bags, EZ-UPS, food containers, etc. take up a lot of space but don't weigh much compared to a spare transmission or 50 gallons of fuel in the bed.

    And then there's these...

When it comes to Baja, it's best to have some extra space than to be fully packed. You never know what's gonna happen. During the 1000 last November one of our chase trucks had an issue and it was driven by the lead mechanic. So my truck went from just me and my buddy to having 3 more guys and their gear for 2 days while we drove to La Paz from Loreto. The roof rack would have been nice.

We chased Baja the last couple years, but just ourselves and not for a team, but I can understand how much crap you need just to stay alive down there. Let alone chasing with gear and and all the other stuff.

Those are just ridiculousness. I thought I had money into my toys... geeze.

Yeah, so these are purposefu, yet not practical for my use. I think it’s exciting you’ve the experiences that merit these needs! I’d love to get more into some serious running but I’m just not at that level as some of you guys. It’d be fun though. I’m still trying to learn how to shift into 4lo ;)

But seriously, stellar updates last year on the race. I was living vicariously through your posts

Armordillo USA is supposedly releasing one right about now IIRC.

I'm not saying its extremely functional, but its sort of a rack I suppose.

There's also GoRhino, which is probably equally as feature lacking.

The quality of either one is anyone's guess.

Armordillo's and GoRhino's are purely for looks and mounting small accessories.

What are you looking for specifically?

I have been tossing around an idea in my head about a rack system that can lift with 12v actuators to meet the requirement of the RTT ladder, but can be lowered or stored, with locks, for when you want to hit the whoops. Mostly because all rack systems that I can find are either way too tall, too bulky, or simply too overlandish.

something similar to this, except in the vertical direction and made out of aluminum.

I’m actually not looking for anything. I just know a few guys on here that are. If I’m not mistaken I think @osidepunker did something similar to what you’ve posted. Maybe check in with him to see what works, and what doesn’t. Great idea though!!
EDIT: I just saw his plate in the pic :frusty:

A while back I had an idea that might be just what you were thinking, a retractable and adjustable height RTT platform. My function was to load or stack bikes/motos underneath.

Forget about all the BS he has going on with the truck, @Baja Mike would this be functional for your purposes or is it too much?

Picking up a 90lb race tire overhead and mounting on a side mount like that is not my idea of fun. Looks like a repurposed ladder rack.
