So I figured I’d do a little freshinh up on the ol girl.

I took a chance on a set of these tail lights since I like the blacked out look

    https://www.carid.com/2006-toyota-t...9691.html?parentsubmodel[]=SUBMODEL|Fleetside

Anyways I’d like to add led bulbs. Anybody Added led bulbs to the stock housing? How’d it work out for ya?

or should I just return the linked lights above and go with the red leds?

Got a link for led bulbs and a good blacked out third brake light?

I run LED switch backs in my front park/turn signals and they work great. I also have them in my reverse lights. I’ve considered running them in brake lights but haven’t gotten around to it. You’ll need to get an LED resistor that can be found on Amazon for $10-$15.

Those resistors just splice in line on the tail light wiring harness? Will I need resistors on each function that gets led bulbs?

I’d like to do led bulbs in taillights, brake lights, and turn signals in those new lights.

I replaced the old oxidized headlights on my 2002 with brand new OEM Toyota headlight housings, and then I installed a set of plug and play V.4 LED headlight bulbs. They are great, and I have experienced zero issues or complaints.

Skip the resistors and buy a LED flasher. Then you can use whatever LED you want without adding resistors. I've had good luck with the Sylvania and Phillips LEDs.

You do not need to “splice” anything. Simply buy a new flasher relay (smartdiode or similar). I just did this on my truck with positive results. Here is what I used:

I suggest these for reverse instead of what I bought:

Sorr far all the questions fellas, but I appreciate the info. This is the first time I’m installing bulbs instead of just buying led tails and some other headlights

so once I buy a new flasher relay that covers me for turn signals front and rear and then I’m good to add leds for all other functions? Does it matter that my truck has the drl’s?

LED headlights - you will need resistors. If you don't you'll most likely have your brights symbol on and no fog light function. Few guys have put them and haven't had to do anything so maybe you get lucky.

LED bulbs (taillight/turn signal) - You will need a relay.

The flasher will allow you to use LED turn lights front/rear, nothing else needed. It's built to function with lower resistance. The other tail lights/running lights (outside of the headlights) shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the prompt replies, one more question and I should be ready to start ordering stuff

where’s that flasher get installed at? In the fuse box under the hood or is it under the dash?

None yet! Does steering wheel cover count? :)
    What did I do wrong:

I have a 2006 Tundra and I purchased these but they did not turn on - they had a loose fit. Here is a picture of my bulb and the LED bulb side by side.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XVT9D1W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    and these:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WD7Z4R7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was intending to replace my brake lights and turn signal lights - also actually want to replace the front marker lights and signal lights.

Should I have gotten the 3156 bulb for rear turn? That still doesn't explain why the 3157 did not work for the brake lights...

Here are 2 links both pointing to turn signal bulbs for the 2006 Tundra:
    https://www.superbrightleds.com/mor...040/?year=2006&make=77&model=1675&scc_id=1442
    https://www.autozone.com/electrical...led-mini-bulb-3157azevoled/770350_0_1556_2805
Shouldn't be that hard? I did buy the relay that was recommended here.

Try removing the bulb and installing it 180° from the way you had it, LED's are polarity sensitive. If that doesn't work you may have to bend the contacts outwards a little to give you a better fit.

This may be a difference in years but my DC had 7443 for brake lights and 7440 for turn

Yeah, I think I get it now! I ordered the wrong bulb size even though I thought I had checked my references. The owner's manual has a mysterious blank for the bulb size of the rear lights. Hopefully 7443 and 7440 are interchangeable since what I ordered covers both. Looks like 3157A for the front - 4 of them.

    They're not the same.

7443 is a dual-element bulb with 4 contacts at the base, 7440 is single element with 2 contacts at the base.

    @Cummins3500 - any photos?

The only exterior lightbulbs I have replaced to date are the cargo lamp bulbs and reverse bulbs with the purpose to aid with visibility. I have recently finished installing all LEDs in the interior with the exception of the cigarette lighter assembly as it requires so soldering. I initially ordered SYLVANIA ZEVO 194s, 921s, and DE3425. However, given their costs, I opted for much more affordable options from Amazon when replacing the remaining interior incandescent bulbs. I have provided links to the posts with photos if you care to check them out. I am really pleased with how everything turned out. I do not think I will be replacing any other exterior bulbs.

The driver-side footwell light was burnt out in the first link/photos, and the second link shows recently replaced/upgraded LEDs in the footwell, ashtray, ignition key ring, center control/panel assembly, and glove compartment.

@tunyota, I’ll see what I can do this evening for some photos

the 3rd brake light is next. I had a blacked out one order but they can’t get me ship date so I’m gonna try some nightshade spray and leds. Then on to the interior.

I’ll give your linked threads a look, I appreciate it

The cig lighter light bulb is doable without complete removal or soldering. Access is from ashtray and you need good hand skills and proper tools otherwise you’ll mangle it. Check my build page.

Getting a decent picture of the tails lit up is proving rather difficult with an iPhone.

can I just tint the inside of my 3rd brake light? so I don’t have to fool with clear and stuff on the outside

@Professional Hand Model Hats to you on that one sir, I’d like to do my whole interior

@Professional Hand Model - Thanks for commenting. Where can I find a link to your build page? I am not seeing it when reviewing your profile etc. I am most familiar with accessing this bulb as I have disassembled and reassembled the upper and lower dash sections numerous times. Removing the ashtray and rotating the cigarette lighter assembly 90 degrees clockwise is the easiest way to access without removing the center console as you noted. I would be interested to see how you were able to remove and replace the incandescent bulb from the plastic housing for which the bulb is a part of. I can confirm the bulb is soldered to the (2) pins that protrude out of the opposite side of the plastic housing.

@Cummins3500 just wanted to share if you weren't already aware "Blacked-out tail lights are illegal in all 50 states... This is for safety purposes. Other drivers need to be able to see when you’re braking, coming to a stop, and getting ready to turn. Having tail lights that are clearly visible is crucial to avoiding accidents." I can speak from experience as I was rear-ended by another driver in part because I had blacked out taillights and as a result totaled my 1996 Impala SS. Had they not been blacked-out/heavily tinted the driver most likely would have been able to see better thus avoiding a collision. Hard lesson learned.

@tunyota, good work, I’m not sure how comfortable I am takin my dash apart lol. Looks good though

also, my tails aren’t the blacked out hard covers, they’re a smoked lenses. I put the brightest led bulbs you can get from diode dynamics. They actually look brighter than stock. Tn law just mentions a red bulb in tail lamps, and brake light position. Ga however, they have a catch all phrase that they could write me on if they want per a buddy mine that works for Cobb county. He said the odds of me getting wrote are pretty slim. I’d like to tint my third brake light to match. It also will get the brightest diode dynamics bulbs.
