My wife and I live way back in the boonies and the only access to Internet was via Satellite internet which is deathly slow and outrageously expensive. We've made it work until now and our local provider finally expanded. We're getting cable internet installed tomorrow!

The speeds aren't the fastest out there but they're much better than what we have now. 40 MBPS vs about 6 MBPS right now.

Recommendations for a wireless router for these speeds?

usually your cable company has recommended routers on their website and provide "semi" support on those models only. Start there first.
I use TP-LINK routers at home and have been pretty happy with them. 200/20 Time warner cable.

Do you have a Best Buy or electronic store close by?

They can help you. I would also recommend buying one, not rent one through the internet provider. Buy a Modem/wireless router that is rated more than what the service provider offers. Upgrades to the system won't affect you then.

Our service provider guarantees 105MBPS, but my M/router is rated at over double that, and speed tests have been 150+MBPS. So don't limit yourself.

I had to upgrade with all the smart phones/TV/etc in my house. Watching porn was frustrating.

A little of this and a little of that.
I have had many routers in my day and am settled on my Asus AC3100 router. It can do what ColoradoTJ said and handles just about anything you can throw at it. Whatever you do, take ColoradoTJ's advice on getting a router that'll double the speeds your internet provider is touting.

Eero system, creates a mesh network all over your property, the more eeros the better. I use a COX cable modem (200Mb) with Cat 6 to the primary eero then I have 3 located at various point on my properties...iPhone app configurable and a breeze to use (you can see exactly who is on your network and block suspicious devices if needs be). Had them a year now and NO issues or re-boots, they do all the updates OTA themselves....simples!

We use Apple Airport router. We have 2 MacBook Pros, 2 iPad Pros, 2iPhones, 2 smart phones (Android based), 4 iPods, numerous iPads (both regular size and minis, I think around 7), 3 PCs (Windows based), Several smart TVs, PlayStation 4, 2 PlayStation 3's, Two Wii's, all connecting wirelessly through this single Airport and they work flawlessly. Our house is over 4000 square ft and the dang thing works everywhere in the house and still works outside in our yard and on our front porch.

This Airport router is not even the newest one they sell. We got it years ago.

@chphilo I was actually looking at that. My wife and I have three iPhones (two of which I have), 2 MacBooks, 2ipads and I have a surface tablet for work. We are huge Apple fans and they're always incredibly reliable.

    Joe,
Same here, we have been an 'Apple House' for years ( 2 x MBPR, 1 x iMac 27 5k, 2 x iPad Air, 2 x iPhone 7+, 1 x MacMini (Roon Music Server), 1 x iPhone 6S = iPod, 3 x AppleTV) and with 23 other connected devices; TV's, 3 x Tivo Roamio, 14 x HD security cams, 2 x Onkyo HT receivers, etc, etc...BUT, the eero is 10x better than the Airport Extreme ever was, at least for me...no more 'dead spots' anywhere in over 5000ft2 of living areas and all around the yard, porches, etc too

That sounds very similar to mine, haha. I forgot about my HD security camera system, and I am sure I forgot something.

I have only one Airport router and I have not experienced any dead zones. My router is about 7 years old or something like that. I am not familiar with eero system, but you said that you have 3. Dang those things are expensive. Are they faster than Airport or are you saying that they have better coverage?

Get an AC1900 router (or better) from a reputable brand. I like Linksys but any good brand will be fine. You'll enjoy having both a 2.4 and 5ghz channel ( can isolate older, slower devices).

X2, also make sure it's dual band.
