I have been accepted into a graduate program starting in the spring. I need a new laptop to do the work and was curious if anyone has any suggestions on the best one to get. I’m not really all that up to date on technology. I don’t really play any games so it will mostly be used for coursework.

I’ve been looking at MacBook airs but haven’t pulled the trigger.

If you know how to use an Apple, that's not a bad way to go, but they are pricey. I just got a new ASUS and it's a bad ass. I made sure to get the Intel i7, 16GB ram, and best if you can get an SSD and HDD drives. Mine has 512 SSD and 2T HDD.

I also have an ASUS and I use it for school and work stuff that I'm allowed to do at home. I've never had any issues with it. I think it's the best laptop I've owned yet....I've had 5 others (student brands) prior to this one. I also took it with me on deployment and it held up in the desert heat/sand.

Go to your local Office Depot and see what they have. They usually have a display model that was top of the line a couple of months ago, and is now heavily discounted so they can make room for the new model. The Mac vs PC question may be answered by the requirements of the graduate program. Some have specific software requirements that will only run on one or the other.

    Congrats!

Especially if your program is on-campus, not online, it might be worth contacting someone at that grad program to find out if the school faculty, libraries, and labs use Apple. I'd used non-Apple pc's until I got to SDSU, then found out I had to use Apple programs for most coursework. This was a few years back; now most programs are usable on either operating system. However, at that time, it meant I had to spend hours on campus doing work I otherwise could have done at home... except I did not have an Apple, so I could not. And the two operating systems are still pretty different. Anyway, I know I sound as old as I am, but no matter how awesome (and more affordable ASUS is), if your program will rely on Apple, you'll probably benefit going that route.

i'd check out the surface range... My wife has a surface pro and i use it all the time - so much so that she's told me to get my own. Since my eyesight is crap and i do lots of either excel work or reviewing diagrams, i'm going to get the surface book that has a larger screen... although 90% of the time i use a docking station anyway.

I think if you're familiar with apple, as in, you have an iphone, macbooks are a safe bet... but I tried to make the transition and it was counter intuitive for me at least so now i'm back with windows & Microsoft. They are so much better & more reliable than a few years ago, I can't remember a single time when the surface pro has crashed or not performed as it should.

I have MacBook Pro and would not go any other way. Pretty much all Mac laptops are flash drive-based now.

Mac's come with their own office products free of charge (Pages, Numbers, Keynote--they are Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, equivalent). I still use MS office because I have so many documents in that form. But I mostly use MS products for short documents (Word especially crap out after several pages of formulas/figures). For professional document, I mostly use LaTeX.

One of my children is being home-schooled so I have to deal with PCs and it looks quite primitive compared to what I am used to.

    Get an macbook.

As much of a hater of apple products as i am, sometime they are just a better fit for the person.

If you dont want to go the macbook route, i'd go with a Surface.

I always prefer Lenovo thinkpads for business applications. Had 'em at most of my jobs and perform well. Don't spend more than what you need; technology becomes dated very fast and you'll want to upgrade in 2-3 years anyway.

Very fond of the MS Surface Pro and Surface Pro Laptop. Our whole office is outfitted with these and they are great.

hard to beat a Mac. Just replaced my old Pro with an Air. My wife and I both completed graduate degrees using Macs. No bloat-ware, better security, free software upgrades, etc. That all said, be sure to consider what you'll be doing exactly. I ended up having to buy a cheap windows laptop just to run a stats program that didn't have a mac version.

I've got a Macbook Air. I like the hardware, I hate the OS. It clashes with most stuff I do and having grown up on Windows I find it counter-intuitive.

Its also the only Apple product I own so that also makes it difficult. Tough to move files etc to and from my Android phone for example.

I'll be selling it in the near future and going back to a Windows based machine. The Dell XPS 13 has caught my eye.

Go to costco.com and grab their Asus laptop. It's like 2k but it's a 1tb SSD, and 64gb of ram and I think 8gb dedicated graphics card. It is set up as a gaming machine but it will be able to run anything out there for a long long time. My brother just bought one and I helped him set it up. i.e. get rid of the pre loaded crap he doesn't need, etc. I have a previous model that was 32gb ram and so on and I am still using it two years later and absolutely love it. I wouldn't buy any other laptop at all. Unless you are doing hardcore graphic design such as cad, in that case I would still use the Asus, if not then a high end mac, but then that would cost twice as much.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
I cannot express my hatred for Mac computers enough. EEK

I ran a Toshiba Satellite with dual boot Operating systems (Windows 7 Pro, Kali Linux). It held up well and I actually had a computer that was not completely locked down, like herrrhhemm cough cough, Macs.

I was in a STEM field, specifically Information technology, so your needs will likely be much different than mine. Mac may take the win for you if you do not need as much functionality and need a "more reliable" platform.

I upgraded from a 10" netbook midway into my major to a 17" HP ENVY w/ i7, 1080p, 2 GB dedicated GC, and aluminum body. I'm an Electrical Engineer, so I needed the power to run memory gobbling programs, gaming, and multitasking for hours on end. I still have it and it runs like a champ almost 5 years later. I use it almost daily and stream from it all the time. It's a beast and has lasted forever where I just wanted it to get me through school. Definitely recommend HP now and I used to cringe at them before owning this.

I have an Asus, it's small, I think 11"? it works fine for what I use it for which is tundras.com and youporn. I think it came pre loaded with word or office but who knows.
