Anyone have experience? Had my second bout last week. It's amazing how something so small can render a man into a fetal position praying for death.

I made a great first impression at my new office. Showed up early, stayed busy throughout the morning. Went to the gym for lunch, had a nice workout. Came back to my desk and suddenly got the cold sweats with an excruciating pain radiating from my abdomen all the way around to my right kidney. I was close to passing out when a coworker noticed my dilemma and walked me to the clinic. Wife picked me up and off to the ER. Took the next 2 days off mostly laying in a fetal position. Went back to work last Thursday, and back in the ER that night with surgery to Follow the next day to insert a stint to open the passage. Still wouldn't budge. Still dealing with the pain I did the only thing I could think of. Took a ride on my Harley Monday, passed the stone Monday night and all is well today. Dang, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, or a Ford owner. lol

Thank God, no, I have not had one and I hope I never do :fingerscrossed:

If I do, I will ask them to cut off my weiner once and for all so I never have to worry about passing one.

Many years ago, my first glimpse of heaven was a shot of morphine or other opiate on admission to the ER for a kidney stone. The pain was so bad, the wife had to stop the car a couple of times so I could puke out the door.

Now that you know what to expect, you can seek opiates earlier. It is no longer necessary to "man up" and tough it out, and it proves nothing. Seek medical care early and reduce your suffering...they may have to hospitalize you, and go up there with basket on a cystoscope and drag it out if it's huge.

Mine was 4mm X 7mm, and they never told me why they aborted the cystoscope procedure. Only some vague comments like "you had us worried there for a bit". I finally passed it the next day.

My Assistant just had one surgically removed two days ago. His father has had 4, and so has his sister and mother. It’s hereditary unfortunately. I’ve never had one and hope I never do!

Holy moly.....I have a little experience . I've passed 14 kidney stones ranging from 4mm up to 9mm. Mine are calcium oxalates, changing my diet helps but I still get them about once a year. Anyone who has passed a stone has my full respect!
As @JohnLakeman said....toughing it out is stupid. Get to the ER and inform them of what you're experiencing, 9 times out of 10 they can see the pain and agony and rush you back for relief. I will say ultrasound hasn't really helped, but would encourage anyone to try. Any relief is welcomed

And for reference, I've ridden BMX and motocross most of my life. Ive broken many many bones, I've reset my circadian rhythm due to a catastrophic head injury, I've had 3 reconstructive shoulder surgeries with a 4th and 5th in the works and a laundry list other injuries.... nothing compares to the pain of a kidney stone, not even close.

My question is, how can we figure out autonomous cars and gain photos of a black hole... yet we still stuffer though kidney stones?

Yup. Been there once. Passed it on my own (after a full ER/doc exam) and the little bastard looked like one of those old spiky WWII sea mines. No thank you.

Good news for me was I was able to catch it and have it analysed. Calcium, which almost always means I had dehydrated myself long enough for it to form. Doc said drink more water; not only will it help the smaller ones pass, but it will help keep them from forming in the first place (beyond all the other health benefits of staying well hydrated). Since then (15 years ago?) I always carry a water bottle with me and I haven't had one of any note since. Ifnwhen I get a pang, I guzzle a gallon and the pain is usually gone in a half hour. Replaced with the other kind of pain... which I'm more than happy to deal with. Had the stone come up as something else, drugs and surgery were definitely in my future.

If you haven't, get one analysed. If it proves you have no specific medical condition that needs to be handled, minimize the diuretics (stuff that dehydrates you like coffee, soda, alcohol...) and maximize the drinking of water. Lots and lots of water. All day. Every day.

Lot's of water, they pass easier, I start guzzling water at the first signs of lower back pain. I have also been told that citrus, lemonade, helps keep them smaller, or break up faster. I will second @CaptSpaulding on the diet. I found that they are less frequent if I stay away from deep fried foods, and soda.

I get one every couple months or so, but they are usually <3mm. The worst was when I had 4, ranging from 4mm to 7mm, waiting to pass and it took 2 weeks to pass the biggest one, it just kept creeping slowly down. I couldn't drive for two weeks, due to the pain and opiates.

^^Funny, but I can tell ya I was in no shape to talk to anyone, or sit up... I had a particularly fun time of it. Went to the ER pretty sure I was dying, and ER docs were too. Once they started to suspect stones, it was off to the MRI. Where I was told to lay perfectly still. Yeah, sure... somehow I managed to do so for barely long enough, and the f&#king MRI crashed right before my data was saved. So I got to flail around for another 2 hours while they fixed the machine, then try to lay still again. Only after the images came in were they confident it was stones, and felt good about giving me the drugs (in my area, faking pain in an ER to score opiates is common. Docs are under orders not to administer any controlled pain killer drug without a confirmed diagnosis). I will never forget that day.

I hate pain, it hurts. Its 2019, no reason to have to put up with pain with today's pharmaceuticals. Or :rasta: never had a kidney stone. They told me I have gaul stones after they took my appendix out.:sawzall: not looking forward to that.

Kidney stones are the worst thing ever. And I have broke my leg in two places at the same time. And my nose and my hand and cracked 3 ribs. I would take the broken bones again. My wife doesn't believe me how bad they actually hurt. We have a friend she has 4 kids and said she would rather be pregnant again then deal with a stone ever again.

I've had 2. 1st one no warning sign just stood up and felt like someone knifed me in the back. Coworker said I turned white in an instant. Wasn't sure what was happening but it was quitting time so I started the journey home, made it about 5 miles before I called my little bro and had him drive me to the ER.

2nd one got a weird twinge in the back in the evening and joked with the wife that it felt like the same spot as the stone but no where near as bad. Should have gone then because 6 hours later I woke up in agony and off to the ER again.

I've now got some pain meds stashed at home and work in case one every shows up again. Like others have said I err on the side of overhydrating and the wife laughs that I can't ever pass a bathroom.

My Mom has had them and said she'd rather have 4 more kids than ever have another stone.

All seperate instances. Surgery was to remove a tumor found INSIDE my spinal cord that was making my left leg not work. Not cancerous, we found out.

Gunshot was while employed as LEO. Same with pepperspray.

Kidney stone was likely from too much meat and bourbon, too little water. Which also contributes to the 5th most painful thing, Gout.

I'm still baffled as to how it formed. I usually put down 30-45oz of water before lunch every day and over a gallon by the end of the day. The only thing I can think of is I use a pre-workout powder 4 times a week and that may have contributed, but I always down water during my workout to flush my kidneys. My cola consumption is almost nill, maybe 1 every 2 weeks or so. Haven't had coffee or alcohol in 25yrs and never did drugs or tobacco. Some may call me a liar or square for this but at my age I don't give a flying flip. Guess I'm gonna hafta rethink my intake since this is probably hereditary. Thanks for all the input. And may I add, the morphine hit was beautiful, until it gave me a headache from the crash.

Did they analyze a stone Chris? That should tell you a lot about the whats and whys. You might have something else going on that needs some medical maintenance.

Then again, sometimes shit just happens.

Yep. I told my kids that regular shots of Wild Turkey kept my cholesterol from becoming plaque...That the alcohol kept it in solution and circulating until it was expelled. A few months later, I needed five bypasses. Karma is a bitch, but then Wild Turkey can help ease that pain. :D

Nah I passed it during the night sometime and didn't catch it. My last one was 11 years ago and didn't catch that one either so if I go that long again I'm a happy camper.

Yikes, I feel your pain 100%. Lots of character in this thread. Hang in there!
I do recall FloMax helping the 'process' a little, although anatomically we're very different and FloMax is only FDA approved for men. It's suggested that it helps the neck of the bladder relax a bit for both men and women. Either way, keep up the water intake and movement. I do 1 gallon a day minimum
