I just learned from another thread about starting my truck with the key fob (press lock twice within two seconds, then hold the lock button). I'm still under my remote services trial. Does anyone know if the ability to start the truck with the key fob goes away if I don't pay for remote services?

I believe it will work without remote services. I just bought a 21 platinum and it was working before I got set up with remote services.

TundraDude34 just posted a video about the Toyota Connect and he said that the remote start will not work if you do not continue the services. My dealer told me it would work without a subscription....I guess we are going to have a word because I do not use these features with the exception of remote start so it would be waste of money. I am conflicted!

Cool, thank you! How did you know to try that? I don't think starting with the key fob is mentioned in the owner's manual at all.

Yeah, I doubt I'll pay for remote services.

When we bought my wife's Rav4 in 2019 at a huge dealership in Vegas the salesman told me that there was no way to use remote start from the fob. He said it only worked from the app. I showed him how to do it and he was blown away. Last month when I was buying the Tundra at a small dealership in Oregon our sales lady told me that the remote start only worked through the app, and there was no way to start the vehicle from the fob. She too was pretty surprised that it worked, and claimed that she was trained that the only way to use it was through the app. I'm not sure what the disconnect there is. Either way though, I can tell you that now that the 1 year trial is up the remote start on my wife's Rav4 no longer works in any way - either through the app or through the fob. I can see it not working through the app without paying, but I honestly think it's bullshit that it stops working through the fob.

The cost for connected services is pretty outrageous for what you get. The remote start is literally the only worthwhile feature on there. I don't need to see what my fuel gauge reads through an app.

Ya that’s horseshit the remote start doesn’t work from the fob without paying monthly

    That’s really crappy Toyota

this 2022 better blow me away lol, reasons are starting to pile up to look elsewhere

My hope is that JRT and the folks at 12 volts comes out with a good remote start. Man, the one I had on 2015 was the bomb dot com. Well worth the cost to purchase and install.

That's unfortunate. I agree with you that remote start is the only part of remote services worthwhile. I'll probably end up just getting an aftermarket remote start for the cost of 1 year of services.

I know that there are other threads where people are pissed off. Rightfully so if they feel they were lied too/deceived or misinformed. People will use the rs/app for differ reasons than others. For people that don’t care about range of the remote ( factory remote distance is ok for them ) instead of paying a subscription ( and use no other feature ) then go to Best Buy or another car audio store and get one installed for $100-200 installed. You can still use the factory key fob AND have a backup with an aftermarket remote ( if you choose...which will give you longer range ) and call it a day. To me, this is not complicated... imo

By the way... if you go aftermarket with the drone/smart start app, it’s about the same price and you get more beneficial features for t

Turning off the key fob functionality off unless you pay $8/month is what is ticking people off. I think most people are ok paying for the app if that is what you use. I have never heard of a car manufacturer disabling a built in feature unless you pay a subscription before now.

It seems pretty stupid to piss off a loyal following over trying to get an additional $8/month.

The trouble is that I see others getting conflicting messages from other dealers, I watched a youtube video just the other day that a Toyota dealer made that showed how to remote start using the fob, they specifically mentioned that there is the app and that it's not required to pay monthly to remote start through the fob. There is another post that discusses just this and that when the fob stopped working the toyota dealer told them that they opened a case and that the FOB should continue to work even if you don't pay and that there is an issue with select VINs not working.

I can't speak for others, but I use the key fob to remote start my truck - and I specifically cancelled the remote services. I haven't paid for sh*t (aside from the truck and mods lol).

I am really glad to hear that. I hope mine will as well. Unfortunately, I have read here and in other Toyota forums that others have not been that fortunate.

Well, sounds like it's hit or miss, and dealerships are clueless about it. Guess I'll find out when my remote services trial expires

True, but I would think (being an IT nerd) that at the least, it means that for those for whom it does not work, it *can* be resolved/fixed.

Sigh. Read the other thread on this. Its a known issue Toyota is working on. Your fobs are not supposed to be dependent on the connected trial being active. They are working on restoring access for those who have lost remote start from the fob it after the trial ended.

If this issue has pushed you from buying another Toyota, then please step back and take a breather. You are overreacting and jumping to conclusions.

I can’t believe that this has created such a fuss. I know that I didn’t buy the truck for remote start. That being said, there are options ( very inexpensive considering what people are willing to pay for mods )people can do to get remote start either using the factory fob ( range sucks anyways ) or with an aftermarket for longer even an app. Many manufacturers are doing features like this. It is what it is.
Just add remote start and consider it a mod and post it to “what have you done” thread lol

Agreed. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's definitely nice, but no way in hell would I give up a vehicle because *ONE* feature doesn't quite work as advertised.

Yeah, this isn't something that should sway you from buying this truck. At the end of the day, I'd like the remote start to work without the remote services, and I'll be a little let down if it doesn't, but honestly, this is a pretty easy aftermarket mod. And for what it's worth, I had no idea that I'd have remote start on the truck when I ordered it...didn't pay much attention to the remote services offered.

    This as well^^^

Here’s another example of a beating a dead horse thread on here.
If Toyota advertises 20 mpg ( just an example of easy numbers ) and I only get 17, I’m not pissed. I didn’t buy the truck for mpg and hoped that I budgeted fuel into my expenses to determine if it’s affordable for me to purchase. I also, take into consideration of driving habits and will vary. If I try my damnest very which way to get 20 but can’t, I’m not filing a class action lawsuit as some have mentioned they will because of remote start. Remote start is a “convenience” and many people don’t even know if they have had it or don’t ( let alone how to activate it ). There IS a solution for people that was remote start. I personally think that if Toyota screwed up here, they will make it right.

I like my truck and would still buy it again with/without remote start, but I still do not care for Toyota turning features in my truck on/off remotely, even if it is a bug on their servers.

What's next, years down the road, our trucks won't start because Toyota's servers are down? (I am only half serious, don't blow up about it.)
