Just curious if any of you have experimented with the remote start to see what kind of range it will operate from? I have a Clifford 2-way system in my Tacoma and it easily works from 200 or 300 yards, and confirms the status of the engine when it is enabled. I have tried the Tundra fob remote start function from close up to make sure it works, and it does. But not sure it will work from my usual indoors locations. And without the 2-way conformation it's almost like I will need to get close to the vehicle anyway to make sure it is running. And I hate the way Toyota has this set up. I wish there was a specific button or a simpler button press sequence.

I know, but after a year that will require a paid subscription, IIRC.

Nothing beats Compustar starters . I have one on my highlander for 4 years . Has a three 1 mile range with a waterproof LCD display that indicates if the car is on and other alerts.

For now ill use the toyota app since I'm not going to pay a ridiculous subscription fee.

The DEIs like my Clifford and Viper are really good, too, and some of the newer ones have that kind of range. But the install is a bear and sort of intrusive. No way I'd trust a shop to do it. I DIY'ed mine in the Tacoma and it has been bulletproof.... but I don't have enough knowledge of the wiring to take this on with the Tundra.

How much does Toyota charge for this service? I have my free year, anyway. I'd pay a small fee for the basic stuff like starting and diagnostics. But I would pass on the AT&T wifi.

Pisses me of that they did this, but I'd pay the $80/yr before cutting up my wires to install a DEI or Compustar. Although there are some other aftermarket guys selling some plug and play solutions... and we'll have to see if they make them for Tundra.

The fob is brutal IMO, half the time it doesn’t work at all as you have to be super deliberate with the button pushes and timing , and distance wise I haven’t had mine work from more than 50 feet. Maybe mine has broken antenna but it’s brutal. App isn’t much better, super slow and flaky. As compared to aftermarket system apps, and fob compared to my late model gm, ford and Honda fobs. My first Toyota but of the dozen vehicles I’ve owned in the last 20 years this fob is the absolute worst

My one test with the fob close to the truck was a PITA, trying to get the button presses just right. But it finally worked. My one test with the app worked fine.

I can't help myself and I will probably do a deep dive into looking into what it takes to do an aftermarket install. Lots of wires to ID, starting, accessory, immobilizer, dome, switched and unswitched 12v., etc. Haven't done one of these since I did the Tacoma back in 2009. But the aftermarket 2-way remotes are really great.

Look into Compustar, most are plug and operational but not sure on the new Tundras .

That’s one thing I’ll miss when my new rig gets here, I have a two way viper right. One with like a mile or two range and it doesn’t shut off when you open the door

so back to shitty fob range and shut off with door open I go

It sucks that remote start plus didn’t make it into this new tundra , Toyota has had a two way system for years

Yes, like the Clifford in my Tacoma which same as Viper. Engine stays running but will die only if you touch the brakes before you turn the key to on position.

Yup, my ram was the same way.

only Toyota is so freaking stubborn with the motor shutting off , that’s really annoying but there is no choice at the moment.

that engineer guy David said ina video a while back they were going to change that but that turned out to be bullshit I think

And you only get 2 10minute starts, and no option to extend the first start in the last minute or 2 like others. Maddening.

ps off topic but I’d also like to back up with the door open :)

Wait... What? I haven't tried that yet, are you telling me it doesn't let you back up with the door open? Or does it just scream nanny warnings at you?

Sorry to break it to ya, but trying that results in a hard stop. Brake goes on. Close door and turn truck off and on again to continue. Kinda like Microsoft Windows lol

The range is super shitty…you need to be right on top of it, timing needs to be Uber precise and half the time I press harder than I probably need to because it doesn’t always seem to respond

    This ^^^

Wow…now I didn’t realize either of these before now

I has Artic start wich is the same as Compustar, Firstech owns them. Claims 3000’ but never tried that distance. Mine is programmed to run 20 minutes before shutting off.Start it open the door and it doesn’t shut off put the key in and you’re all set.

Actually I got have sworn when I got the truck in august before the last infotainment update , that there WAS an option to extend the first start. Definitely not there now. Maybe it was my imagination

Where did you get it installed? Or did you DIY? I am curious if they have made these easier with adapter harnesses and such or if you still need to identify and then cut and splice a shitload of wires.

Wait... "put the key in"? These 2022 and 23 Tundra are push to start.

I know I could get it done, but I had a bad experience once with Best Buy on my old Chevy truck. It is really hard to know if the particular tech who does your vehicle knows what he is doing, to include the disassembly, wiring and bypass module programming. Something went off in my Chevy and the brake lights were on constantly even when parked with engine off. And DEI had dropped Best Buy as an auth dealer so I was SOL at getting it fixed. So I ripped it out myself. Next time I did it myself in my Tacoma. Daunting but doable... if you can identify and locate all the wires.

FYI You will lose the key fob remote start when the subscription ends or you opt out of the "connected services"

I understand that. This guy that did mine has been around forever and have dealt with him many times. It’s hard to find someone to trust and do it right. All he does is mobile electronics and electronics on boats.

As long as I can remote from the app I’m good, just have to live with the shut off after door opens . It’s not worth messing with only for that

I’ll save my messing around for the audio system, hehe
