    Hello folks,

I'm waiting for the arrival of my brand new 1794.

In the meantime I get, even more pumped, browsing the forum.

I really don't want to deal with the outdated HU and Entune :poking:

I'm considering upgrading the HU to the Kenwood Excelon DDX9905S and also throw in a Kenwood CMOS-320 and the Kenwood DRV-N520 Drive Recorder

Any thoughts, concerns or heads up related to this set up?

    Regards!

do you still play DVDs and CDS ? if not just get a unit without the option (mech less unit). also i would wait a bit to see if any wireless Car play HU coming up from Kenwood.
do you use your phone a lot ? (android or apple?).
Alpine HALO 9 is nice too.

Now I’m interested in a new HU. I really like having my FRAC though.

Most new head units have the front camera as a feature. U just plug it in the camera to the head unit and done. No need of the harness anymore

I’m under the impression I cannot use Netflix on this unit, therefore DVD’s will be my go to option. I don’t use CD’s anymore. Do you happen to know the release timeframe for the new Kenwood HU’s? I could wait to see that new features they got.

I mainly use the phone’s for the apps... iOS and Android

Actually that setup uses the stock rear camera and the CMOS-320 for the front camera. Front camera it’s compatible with the HU unit as per information on Crutchfield... AS far as I understand it’s just plug the cam and GO.

As far as I know, there are no aftermarket head units that retain ALL factory features. The most important to me is the navigation display on the dash.

If I'm wrong, somebody please school me because I'm sick of my HU rebooting when I try to make a call.

Alpine HALO 9 is one of the latest. Now with Apple IOS12 release, Car Play is much more interesting ( 3rd party maps for GPS etc...).
No matter what, manufacturers always follow the Apple trend. I'm expecting a bunch of new cool HU for CES 2019 (January 2019).
wireless HU for CarPLay is great but right now only few manufacturers have it. I bet it will change real quick. They usually use Bluetooth to establish first the connection between HU and phone then switch to their own wifi to establish the playing mode. That's how Alpine does it and Kenwood already incorporating it in their new HU. check the specs, they usually mention bluetooth and wifi for the HU. After that it's a matter of time before manufacturers release a firmware upgrade to support wireless mode. My 0.02. YMMV.

Kenwood is good too. They gonna come up with some cool stuff too I'm sure.

I'm also on the sideline waiting to update my older Kenwood HU :) what I like with Kenwood are the inputs for front, rear and dash cameras pre integrated.

Honestly, for me, the hovering screen it’s kind of a no-no... the Alpine system looks badass and the brand it’s excellent... I just prefer aesthetically the HU embedded into the dash... Just my 0.02

You guys play video on the HU while driving? Even if it's for the passenger, isn't that distracting? I installed a bypass on our Infiniti before but nowadays, the wife just watches her phone. Pretty sure I'd get a ticket if a cop saw Netflix on my screen lol. Not saying I wouldn't like a media HU though, cool.

Not distracting at all for me. My eyes are on the road at all times. We watch movies netflix anything and then i have a 13 inch flip down for the kiddos in the back. So it shows what ever i play upfront it shows in the back.

I don’t... hell, I don’t even have my Tundra yet! :facepalm:Honestly I was more thinking about the passenger or maybe me catching a small Youtube clip while waiting for someone... I’ll say my main appeal for a HU it’s audio (though not an audiophile), front and rear camera (360° would be awesome!) car stats, nav and phone... podcasts...

I've checked info and vids on the Halo 9... I gotta confess the idea of getting this HU it's starting to grow on me!!!

Still I would've preferred a embedded system... My mind says it's more 'discrete' and less prone to theft as it's not that visible/tempting

Might sound ridiculous but some sort of quick release feature would be useful so you can detach the screen and take it with you...

    Have a great weekend!
