New to the forum. Just picked up my first truck a few days ago. 06 Tundra double cab limited 4x4 with 95,000 miles on her. Pretty clean. Has a older junk Alpine single din head unit in it and I feel the sound quality is lacking (volume doesn't go very high and just sounds awful). It has no aux (front or back of unit) and no blue tooth capability so it's pretty useless for me. My question is how good are the factory JBL head units? Should I get a used factory unit ($50-$75) and add a Bluetooth kit or a different better quality after market one? I personally like the looks of the factory unit but my main concern is sound quality. Thanks in advance!

There’s a reason the JBL units are $50-$75... search JBL on the forum.

    Welcome! Nice looking truck!

Most say go aftermarket, especially for sound quality. Thinking that year model stock will not have many newer features.

Thanks for the input guys, I honestly just hate the look of modern head units in older vehicles. I'm still torn!

I am the same way, but wanted a back-up camera.

There are some head units that look better than others. Look around.

Suggestions on an aftermarket HU that pairs well with the JBL system?

Not an expert but believe that there are harnesses made for just about make / model. Hearing Crutchfield has great customer support and can provide what you need. Other national chains very helpful as well; Like ********* or even Bestbuy

Been 25 years since I did any auto stereo work. Recently had a local stereo shop do my install. I had a Pioneer HU and new tailgate latch/camera. They provided everything needed, new harness and dash kit. Labor and few parts to install like $180ish for stereo with bluetooth, NAV and with new back-up camera installed - replacing tailgate latch with camera. Money well spent IMHO.

    Good Luck.

I might just do a full audio upgrade down the road (speakers, amp and HU). With that in mind, I might as well just get a decent aftermarket HU and upgrade all the speakers when I get the time and money.

If you like the single den look then you can get some amazing headunits nowadays for around $100-$120. Like really good ones.

And with the selection of non car audio brand speakers available, awe man... Under $400 nowadays can get a beast 4ch amp, front woofers, tweeters, and a nice single din.

Lol, aftermarket vs jbl was the question right? Definitly aftermarket.

Good use of that space. Thats enough to house quite a few different good subs.

Anyone find or know of a small seat bracket lift kit to raise the backseat for a little extra breathing room between the floor and the seat bottom?
