Here's a few pages from some of us that have went w/upgrades from @james@tech12volts... There are a few other threads out there, but this should get you started...

    21 TRD Pro JBL Upgrade

Personally I started by adding the JBL DSP amplifier (DSP 4086), which is a plug and play upgrade for our factory systems. The DSP 4086 uses the factory amp to receive signal from the factory head unit, and it then sends power to your existing factory speakers or you can choose to upgrade those as well. Replacing the cheap sub and plastic box is a must at the same time. I went w/a single sub in a ported enclosure that fit in the original sub box location, so no mods there again just plug and play.

If you choose the upgrade dash and door speakers at the same time or at a later time, the new amp does a very nice job of cleaning up the signal and delivering better sound from a near factory set up. In my opinion this is your best best unless you're looking to do a complete sounds system swap/upgrade.

Something to note about the DSP 4086... One of the reasons a lot of us purchased through @james@tech12volts is because the 4086 can be very difficult to tune/set up properly, but James seems to have them figured out real well and ships them out pre-wired, pre-programmed and pre-tuned to your personal set up. Here is his website if you want to play around w/it...

    https://www.shop.tech12volts.com/

You can also find plenty of build threads were guys have done elaborate custom systems if that's your thing too. Here is the audio/video threads..

    Audio/Video

Good luck w/your build, and I hope you find something inspiring

I second this ^, still happy after 2 years of use, full replacement with one of his kits.

JBL= junky barely loud. I’ve been an audiophile most of my adult life. Truly great sound always has and probably always will start with the head unit. Doesn’t matter if you have a dsp amp. It can only clean up so much. Start with a great head unit and go from there. You won’t be disappointed. My current setup in my tundra wasn’t cheap. I’ve got about $7600.00 into it and I did all myself minus the final tuning. To be done right, the truck was dropped off at a professional stereo store and they use a four microphone array for tuning and it takes about four hours. I had two curves programmed. One for driver only and one if I have passengers. The sound quality is the absolute purest in the driver only curve as your ears get to experience signal delay with the dsp. It’s amazing.

    Whats all in your setup?

And i agree with this ^. If you are serious about your music, start with removing the head unit. I spent waaaayyyyy to much money and time trying to work with the factory head unit and it just always fought me. Bit the bullet and swapped the head unit and was much happier.

Running a Kenwood DMX 957 XR head unit, JL audio VX 1000 5 channel DSP amp, focal flax evo separates in the front doors with tweets mounted in sail panels. I fast ringed the door speakers and even the tweets. I also sound shielded all four doors both inside and outside skins. Sound shielded the floor and back window area. Added some cheaper hertz 165’s to the rear doors simply as filler sound if I have rear passengers, otherwise I fade them out via head unit. Ran JL audio TW3 10” shallow subs in a custom sealed box behind the rear seat. Added the JL audio DRC 205 sub switch and sound curve switch to the center console so I can adjust without reaching forward. I took my time doing the install and made sure not to take any shortcuts. Mounted the amp in the factory location under the passenger seat on black plastic sheet. Everything is tidied up and out of sight minus the head unit. All done, took almost 3 weeks of work plugging away at it here and there. Was it worth it? Absolutely 100%. The sound quality is amazing. I try and run lossless files as much as possible to help better the sound. In the end, loud is easy. Loud and sounding great takes time and money.

During the tail end of the pandemic is when I bought the head unit. I waited 9 months to get it and had to pay a premium for it. Had I not got the head unit, I would have passed on the entire project.

    Sounds like a good setup.

I went with 3 way active in the front and 2 way passive in the rear. the midrange driver made a HUGE difference!

Agreed. A big midrange driver really makes the system. It’s a fine though between the window glass hitting the coil or the door panel not wanting to snap on all the way. It was a lot of trial and error and measuring to get the biggest driver to fit both ways.

Nice. They also make great stuff. I really wanted the Focal ES 165 3 ways for up front, but they were about 2300 bones alone. Yikes.

I bought it from JBL but they've been long discontinued.

JBL MS-8 Digital sound processor at Crutchfield

It calibrates itself with headphones and me sitting in every seat.
I never did get a good sound with it.
Between installation and testing, I wasted A LOT of time with it.

    I even installed a 4" center speaker.

The funny thing is in the end, with a decent set of front door components, I ended up disconnecting all 3 dash speakers with the aftermarket HU and amp.
The dash speakers made it all sound worse.

Sorry for the thread drift @Fcampa89

I usually get either a response back from him in like 5min or super late at night. What email did you use? There is not an "s" at the end of volt.

That seems like a pretty cool concept. Too bad it didn't work.

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading my 8ch Helix DSP to the newer 10ch one. On the news, you can set target curves and it will adjust the levels for you.

I 100% agree about ditching all the dash speakers. At one point i had components in the doors, and the tech12volt JL dash and center tweeter kit. Way too much highs, but a cool idea.
Ultimately i went with 3 way separates from Audiofrog and put the midrange dirver in the dash corner. I'm amazed with how well the 2.5" midrange does. It really wakes up the sound.

A lot of good information! I just got my truck and the JBL is not the greatest compared to my dads 17 Tacoma.

I say this to so many people... The source is the most important piece to establish how you want your system to perform. Each piece you add downstream of the source should keep the level of performance in mind and continue throughout the system. The second most important thing is environment control and install (a $2500 set of 3-ways will sound like dog shit if they not properly fitted and mounted to a properly prepped baffle or surface). I've spent a lot of time and $ to ensure the environment is solid, quiet, sealed, angled, spaced, tweaked, or whatever you need to do to position and securely fasten all related pieces. Once you design out the anomalies of the truck, you system potential increases 10X. The better prepped your truck is for a system, the easier it is for everything else...
So I agree with @gizardlizard when saying please replace the ridiculous, stupid, antiquated, under-voltage, HU and start with something that will generally be considered "audiophile".
The stock HU with DSP band-aids will never get you as clean, pure , or powerful a source signal to be considered "audiophile" quality. Better than stock? Yes, but never an audiophile quality.

I replaced the head unit, door speakers, and amp in my 2016 Tundra 1794. The amp was dead, the head unit unresponsive to either the knobs/buttons or touchscreen, and at least one of the door speakers was blown (can't remember which as I had no sound coming from my system). I went with the following items:
I was originally going to install a JBL DSP4086 amp, but after talking to the audio tech for the install I chose the Pioneer (more power in a smaller unit). I also kept the factory subwoofer (for now) as I A) couldn't find a reasonably prices sub, and B) I am nearly 60 years old (57), and (for the most part) my days of trying to break the neighbor's windows or shake the clothes off of a woman and bring her to the O with bass have passed, again, for the most part. I also didn't replace the dash speakers (2 tweeters and 1 center). I was originally going to swap them out with a Kenwood Excelon KFC-X3C 3-1/2" 2-way car speaker and a pair of Rockford Fosgate R1T-S Prime Series tweeters, and run them directly from the head unit and not the amp. From talking to the audio tech, it was suggested that I keep the dash speakers I had. By doing this and going with the Pioneer amp over the JBL, I saved a nice amount of money. Once he got into it, he discovered that the center dash speaker was also blown, so we went without running them (tweeters or center speaker).

I gotta say, it sounds GREAT! Nice punch with the bass (tested it with a favorite by KRS-ONE, "Love’s Gonna Get Cha (Material Love)") and volume!

Now all I gotta do is get a wifi network installed in it so I can go fishing and stream movies @ the same time.

Holy crap I'd love to hear how your setup sounds compared to mine. Mine is nothing great at all but I did replace everything that was stock. It would be a nice contrast to see what I need to do to make mine sound better even though I naively think it sounds just fine the way it is.
