Recently got in a wreck, I'm looking at the pillar damage behind the rear door, is it totaled? I'm freaking out.

Possibly. Totaling isnt just what’s damaged, but also how much it’ll cost to repair it. That looks expensive.

Your Miles + Model Year + # of blow airbags will be a contributing factor to see if it's totaled or not.
If no blown airbags then I think it's very much repairable.

Mine was similar. Not quite as bad but they cut that section of the cab out and replaced it. Couldn't tell anything

I had similar damage when someone hit my truck in the parking lot. It wasn't as bad, but cost insurance company about $7k to have it repaired.

I was gonna guess “back of the cab” but I’m not much of a car guy... :notsure:

As for “totaled” that’s up to insurance. My wife’s ‘17 forester had the front end demolished when someone turned in front of my daughter (no air bags because of the slow speed). Total repair estimate was $17k on a car that was $35k new. Insurance opted to repair it... final total bill was $19,600.

Make sure if they don’t total it to go after a diminished value claim. The vehicle report will carry the wreck, so at least you get some recovery out of the insurance company for that.

Tundras seem hard to total because they hold their value so well. Definitely go for a diminished value claim and remember you can haggle with their insurance company over it.

Need a little more information than just a close up picture. Here in Iowa, you need to hit 50% of the value for them to total. What state are you in? What year was the truck with how many miles? Got some further out pictures to get a better idea of the whole truck?

That sucks, but don't freak out boss. It's not worth getting worked up over. Its just a truck. You & other party aren't hurt, that's priority. These other things will be worked out. You're not at fault, so insurance-wise, you're good to go.

Edit: well, I'm assuming you're not at fault by the look of the damage. As long as you didn't pull out in front of someone, doesn't look like you're at fault.

Depends on a few factors (I’m a former claims rep, auto damage appraiser, and total loss claims manager).

    • Year and mileage on the truck (as key components of value)
    • Structural damage (doesn’t appear to be non-repairable, but a pic isn’t sufficient to say for sure)
    • Total cost to repair (insurance companies and states have different thresholds/formulas - typically 70-90% of ACV but can be 50-100% or what’s called a Total Loss Formula - established by the state)

Got swiped this morning. Similar situation. Any recommendations on rules to give the body shop? Any idea as to how diminshed value is calculated?

Diminished value isn't a given and can't be calculated until the repairs are done. Just had a 2019 Subaru repaired ($8,000+) and entertained the idea myself (as stated earlier, I have 12 years experience in auto insurance including as an adjuster, appraiser, and total loss claims manager). I still may file a diminished value claim.

Basically, you have to prove that your vehicle lost value (amount of damage repaired, quality of repair, age, mileage, and value impacts the likelihood of there being a diminished value claim - a 2021 $100,000 Porsche with 1,000 miles has a greater likelihood of a diminished value claim) and then you have to determine what that value is. For example, my 2019 Subaru was worth about $18,000 prior to the accident. Repairs were excellent, but the record will be there with Carfax, so I might have a minor claim.
