I have a 2018 Tundra crewmax and I have been looking at 2020 Tundras for quite some time and am baffled at the prices Toyota is marketing the Tundras at. Is it me or are these prices ridiculous for a minimally updated truck? Hoping the 2022 Tundras will be more affordable

What prices do you see? I haven't looked for a few years.
When I was buying my Tundra, the new Tacomas were almost same price ($4K less) and in some cases even higher than some Tundras ... Talk about crazy!

No one should be paying MSRP on a new vehicle.

Its there so the dealer can give you a “discount” during the purchase negotiation.

I’ll never buy a new vehicle,
I’d find a used one that hopefully meets your list of needs and is low mileage.

Never taking a 10G hit the day it rolls off the lot.

One other thing, the more mods you put on a vehicle, the smaller the crowd that wants that vehicle
when you have to sell it.

Prices of all new trucks are absurd. The monthly payments end up being way too much for me. I could swing it, but I'd have to basically stop eating, and that just doesn't work for me. I buy only used trucks. Might take a bit more looking around and research to find the right one, but it is definitively worth it to avoid those crazy new truck payments.

When we started looking at trucks, we took out a Tacoma and were very very close to signing....like moments away. I don't like to do quick deals without researching, so we backed out and reconsidered the bigger Tundra as it was actually cheaper for a comparable model, SR5, especially with rebates and any financing if needed.

I don't think it was overpriced at all. I feel the Tacoma was too much for its size, features and towing capacity.

When I was in the market for a Tundra I was dead set on buying used... until I saw that Used Tundras in the year/model/mileage range I wanted were well over $30k. I ended up buying my base model 2019 SR DC 4x4 5.7L for $31.5k ! I was seeing 2017-2018s with a 4.6L for $29-30k!

I’m turning my base model SR into a poor mans TRD Pro at a fraction of the cost.

Same here. I was looking at used then decided for just a bit more I could get a longer warranty and get exactly what I want.

I buy them used. My 2002 was a hardly used 1 owner that I bought as a CPO in '03 with 17k on it, my 2007 was a well used 3 owner truck that I bought in '17 with 270k on it. Both are reliable trucks, and they are paid for.

Honestly, for new trucks I think they are very good relative to other brands. Now, if you are comparing to 15 years ago I agree, but Toyota pricing has not changed much at all over the last 3 years or so from what I have seen.

You can get a top of the line Toyota, 1794 or Platinum, for $50k OTD pretty easy. Now I know that is not cheap. And it still does not have the features of the big 3 top of the line models. But they all have MSRP of $70k and you can not get them for anywhere near $50k. I looked very hard at a Ford F-150 Lariat. It was spe we comparable to the Tundra. Had some things Toyota didn't, Tundra had some things the Ford didn't. Tried 4 dealers between here and Atlanta and the cheapest I could get an F-150 was upper $50's. After tax it was $60k. I got much more truck for all in $11k cheaper.

I agree that entry level Tundras are a lot more than entry level of the big 3.

Tundras run $32k to $50k (not including pro)
Big 3 run $25k to $74k (not including Raptor)

Tundra pricing has stayed very consistent over the last handful of years.

I know they come off of MSRP a lot, but Big 3 have went up ungodly amount.

Call me crazy, but my Platinum for right under $50k is a pretty damn good deal in today's market.

I like to buy new because in my experience guys only sell vehicles, especially trucks, if there's a problem with them. Or they're trying to sell a one year old truck with 100k kilometers on it for what they paid for it.

I looked at used before buying my 2019 brand new. Problem was that the used ones were only a couple / few thousand dollars less with significant mileage. For the warranty (probably never need it though) and the financing it was worth it to me to buy new at the time.

I did look used, and found a screamin' deal (2016 TRD Pro, loaded, with 60K miles for like $27K, but someone beat me to it) before looking new.

Honestly....I disagree about some new prices. MSRP on a comparable truck from any of the big 3 costs at LEAST $2K more to start, and in some cases $4-6K more. I had very little trouble getting the dealer to come down about $7K on the truck, and ended up with a great deal, plus

    - 4 years maintenance
    - lifetime engine warranty
    - $100 towards parts on a truck

I agree with what y’all have been saying. I’ve always bought certified used vehicles with their warranties which was much cheaper. However, I bought my 2018 new as it was the same price for used comparable tundras at the time. With that being said, toyota has jacked up the prices of new tundras with minimal upgrades to their truck (push to start, new head unit, remote start and wifi). I’m seeing sr5 models pushing $50k. Ridiculous

Mid $40K for a SR5, $50K ish for TRD Off Road here in Canada. Don't ask about Platinums or Pros.

I've pretty much given up the idea of ever buying a new truck again.

I think if you can afford a couple extra K on a new one, its well worth it in the end. I had my heart set on a pristine MGM 2016 TRD D/C i found at this dealership, it was a lease with just over 36k miles and very well maintained. They wanted 31k for it and wouldn't budge a penny even though i explained to them i was taking a big risk with the expired warranty, and would have to replace the tires sooner than later, they just shrugged. Ended up walking out pretty disappointed, but am now very happy because i ended up finding the new truck i love even more then the one i thought i did for 6.5k more. Don't be afraid to walk away, sometimes it really works out. Just my 2c. :)

Anyone in the market now should seriously consider waiting until lockdowns/quarantines/social distancing is done. All automakers will be fighting to make up market share and the prices will drop. Now is NOT the time to buy.

Please note that I'm saying this as someone living in Ontario Canada where dealerships have been forced to close, with only Service departments offering emergency repairs.

Used ones with decent mileage were like 2-3k leas than new so I went new in 2015. Toyota’s hold that value. Gotta love em.

A lot depends on the used vehicle market at the time you buy. Also interest rate differences if financing. Plus you have to consider how long you are going to keep the vehicle and how many miles you drive. When I bought my first Tacoma I looked at a used one used Tacomas can be hot at times. In this case the vehicle was a year older and was not a TRD OR or with factory tow. I made dealer an offer and they whined about how much they had in it. This was during the great recession and Toyota was offering a rare rebate on Tacomas. Buying new was a no brainer at $1500 more. There are too many variables to make a blanket statement that used is a better deal.

New Tundras are really spendy if you factor in how little they have changed in the last 13 years. Other than some minor trim, sheet metal and fabrics, the Tundra is essentially the same truck it was in 07. Toyota really needs to up their game and modernize the Tundra. That said.... please no twin turbo six cylinder.

Im in that boat at the moment. Haven’t been able to find an inferno TRD Off Road double cab that isn’t beat to snot, they all seem to be crew cabs. Cant justify a shorter bed than I had in my Tacoma.

Looking at a new voodoo TRD OR and seeing the lowest $ around $38k, $7k more than I was going to spend on a used one but thats $7k I can leave in my bank account if Im patient. Or just not be such a picky pain in the ass and get another color instead. I do love that orange though..

Prices of a new car, but more so trucks are getting more and more out of hand even a few years old.I feel like it's getting to the point that you can't afford a decent truck unless you make 100k a year or more.. Unless you want a 2WD stripped single cab..I split the blame between corporate greed and the everyday consumer who needs to have all this new fancy crap and creature comforts for their ride to the grocery store.. I felt the Tundras were reasonably priced in comparison to Ford or Chevy.. Some reason Ford's around here are sky high for used..I know the Tundra will outlast and out value basically any other truck, granted it's slightly behind on being the newest and best in everything.. I am okay with that. I'm quite happy my 17 missed out on BSM an all that crap..
