The wife and I both have July 4-10 off and are trying to decide on where to go. Colorado is on our bucket list, as neither of us have ever been there. I was wondering if you had 7 days including flying from NC and back , how best to spend the time. We would rent a car of course.

Come visit Portland! If you love urine, feces, hypodermic needles and constantly being harassed by the homeless then this is the place for you!

We were married in Hawaii and have plans to return on day. This year we wanted to go somewhere we have not been and because of the short time period we have will probably stay in the US.

What are you into? That might help point in the right direction. You got RMNP and stay at Estes Park. There is a lot of places to visit in Colorado Springs too. There are always mountain towns like Vail, Aspen, etc. It depends on time and what you like to do.

Go to MDI Maine. Acadia I has to be my favorite place I've ever been. Beautiful ocean views from the mountains, awesome stores and activities in the village green with some really good ice cream places, and a free bus service that will take you pretty much anywhere on the island

Bozeman Montana .. for real. My favorite city in the US. Amazing outdoor opportunities, clean air, picture perfect beautiful and decent people. Food is pretty good but no sweet tea so that’s minus 1.

and Ted Turner lives there so there’s that.

You will never regret visiting this amazing part of our country.

Expensive to fly too. Another minus 1.

RMNP sounds interesting maybe a guided hike, We also enjoy the small town charm. What can you tell me about the million dollar highway. we heard about a train that travels through the mountains (Durango and Silverton locomotive.) Although Durango seems a long way from everything else.

The “million dollar highway” is US 550 from Ouray to Silverton. It’s a nice drive. Can be gripping for some due to the lack of guardrails on the southbound lane. If you’re in a car no problem, but rental rvs often struggle. There are other plenty of other low-key roads in that part of the world that allow for similar views that allow for stopping, photos, and moving at a more reasonable pace too.

Durango and Silverton Railway is a neat trip and can be configured several ways (one way, out-and-back, overnight, etc) but is a nice way to take in the scenery.

Where would you fly into in that part of the state and how long a drive would it be to say RMNP.

If you go to RMNP you should stay a night or two at the Stanley. My wife and I try to make it up there once a year! We were just up there mid January for our anniversary. We stayed in Estes Park for 4 days, then stayed 3 nights in the Denver area and took a trip to Vail on our last day. So much to do and see in the area.

We flew into Denver International Airport. From the airport to Estes Park is maybe 1.5 hrs or so, not bad at all.

Airports for there would be either Montrose (MTJ) or Grand Junction (GJT). From Montrose to Estes Park is a haul - 6-7 hours? From Durango or Silverton to Estes Park over the 4th, 9+?

If you’re planning on doing something like that, you may be best flying into DEN and out of somewhere in the west end of the state or vice versa?

I’ve been to Colorado a few times to escape the Texas heat and humidity in the summer time and loved it. We found it absolutely beautiful. We saw the Garden of the Gods and drove up Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs. I also hiked a bit of the Flat Irons near Boulder, and we went river rafting somewhere west of Colorado Springs. On my bucket list, though, is to take the Tundra on one of those trails between Ouray and Telluride.

Anyway, my experience is limited. I’m sure the Coloradans will suggest some other stuff. Otherwise, definitely go!

you don't want to come here. nothing to see. move along.

we've spent a significant amount of time there, 3-4 weeks every winter for several years in a row. kauai is my favorite. i like the quiet and absence of humans. bec preferred oahu and since i was there getting stuff for the magazines, that was usually are destination. we'd rent a place near shark's cove. good times. except for the day i lost my shit in TOH backdoor...

do you know the backstory? during the building of it, the head fell off, severed the artist's legs and killed him. for whatever reason, they finished it and still put it up.

the art installations along pena to the airport are supposed to be rotating and temporary. the horse is the only one that became permanent.

I think we will fly into and out of Denver. We can fly there non stop for $225 roundtrip. To me that is a steal.

You can fly into Durango on American or United. If you go to Southwest Colorado, Hit Mesa Verde, Million Dollar Highway, Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Rico, Teluride, Gunison, Black Canyon, Moab, Monument Valley.....There is a shitton of mountain stuff around there. Hiking, Mountain biking and 4 wheeling are off the chart.

    Some stuff
    rmnp over 4th of july?

personally, i'd fly into denver, grab a car and make a leisurely drive down to telluride. or fly into montrose. spend the time exploring the southwest corner between cortez, telluride, ouray, silverton and durango. beautiful country and a metric poop ton of outdoor stuff to do. all the high passes will be open by then. take a hike along the Colorado Trail from the top of Molas Pass. anything but rmnp/estes over the 4th.

Good lord and I thought the Skydance Bridge sculpture here in OKC of a scissor-tailed flycatcher that really just looks like a crane fell over and was welded where it fell was bad.

    Well stated.

@k9shag, you can get every bit of mountain scenery in the San Juans that you can get in RMNP with 1/5 of the people.

Others may argue this point; it’s just my opinion, of course. I’m partial to the SJs.
