Yes the electric motor should stay on during towing to help... Based on the TFL truck tests.

Actual, lucky, hybrid owners can confirm

Anyway you can find the same thing on the LC 300 or LX ?
Just curious if the torque curve is different knwoing that they are using premium gas and produce a little bit more HP.
    Thank you

I'll see what I can find...I would imagine the curve is nearly identical.

I will say: I had a little fun with a GX550 yesterday. Lexus is having a training event for DFW Lexus Dealers across the street from my place. I got in a little Stop Sign to Stop Sign fun with one of the trainers yesterday. Despite the lower 349HP rating, GX550 does very well with the torque.

Who uses premium gas? It isn't mandated for the hybrid system. I use Mid grade and can not really tell the difference between it and premium. The truck isn't tuned to run on premium gas only.

I believe the Lexus motors, while mechanically very similar/identical, are tuned for higher octane gas. 91+ octane IIRC, possibly 93 preferred. Not totally sure as I don’t own one. But yeah, 87 works just fine for my Tundra.

I’ve used 93 since new. Highest available when outside of TX.
    Lexus tunes for 91.

Obviously if 91 isn’t available, then 93 works. You can run 87 or 89, but it will reduce engine power and could cause damage if used long-term.

We have 87, 89, and 93 here in DFW.

My 16 WRX STI has premium fuel only on gas cap, I run 93 octanes in it only. If premium fuel was a requirement, then it would be on the fuel cap. The Tundra is tuned to run on 87-90 octane, I am sure it doesn't hurt anything, but I run mid-grade primarily to reduce the amount of ethanol in the fuel I run. I have run 93 octane in it occasionally but I noticed no performance difference from going to a 89 octane mid-grade from a 93 and back and forth. I like to run 93 every so often to help clean the injectors and keep the ethanol caking to a minimum. However, you could probably run 87 all the time and not notice a power difference in it either. Toyota uses a very robust fuel programming system and it detects and tunes to run best on the fuel grade it is given.

My use of 93 is 1,000,000% personal preference...

10.4:1 CR, 15+psi of boost and outside air temperatures of 110°+ in TX summers...

While Toyota uses "very robust fuel programming", Lexus has a Premium Fuel Requirement for a reason...they also had it on the 3UR when Toyota spec'ed 87 in the Tundra/Sequoia...

Lexus uses different ECU tunes I am sure, and that is Toyota's premium luxury brand so I can see it. I would imagine the Toyota GR cars use 93 or recommend it from the factory as well. In this modern auto making world many brands share platforms to reduce costs associated with product development. I believe in premium fuel but it isn't fun when that stuff approaches 5-6 dollars a gallon. You could also find lower octane non ethanol fuels as well. I am sure you probably have 89 or 90 ethanol free pumps around Texas somewhere.

Buc-ee's has 92 Ethanol Free. I've used it. Decent increase in MPG but it's not worth the 60-70 mile roundtrip...

We have ethanol free fuel here by my house and office for use in boats. I used it in my old motorcycles, but I'd advise anyone else against using it. I've heard a couple of people have issues with it. Specifically, one of my bookkeepers put it in her mercedes. It somehow destroyed all her knock sensors. Vehicle was on limp mode.

Ive run ethanol free premium and thought it was much better, decent MPG gains as well.

That was in MN though, we get boned here and get ethanol

One reason I run mid grade is that it typically has 10 percent or so of ethanol, the low grade regular gas may say 10 percent but it is more like 20 plus percent. They lie on ratings where by the percent of ethanol in 87 octane is higher than published and so is mid grade but mid grade is around what 87 is supposed to be blended with. The gas companies tend yo make more money by blending in more ethanol than they are supposed to.

We have had Priuses for daily commuters and long trips for 14 years. I am a fan - our ‘21 prime is a fast fun car.

But I just picked up a 22 Tundra SR5 2wd with the regular V6TT and am plenty happy with it.

For me it was more of the truck configuration as I would have opted for the hybrid except it was mandatory I have the 6.5' minimum bed, but I didn't want the longer overall length of the crew max with the 6.5' bed. I don't need the extra cab space of the crew max as well. So the hybrid is not available in the double cab configuration. That being said, the power of the non hybrid limited is more than adequate for the towing I do.

All I know is that I test drove a non hybrid. Stopped on highway and braked it and nailed it and it laid down then took off. Drove hybrid model same road same thing. Braked it and nailed it and it started pulling never did lay down. That was enough to convince me to get a hybrid. Just wish they would have put a little more battery in it. So, it would do a little better around town and out on lower speed limit roads. I'm happy with hybrid.

Can you please explain the "lay down" portion of the test?

    Got it, thank you.

So, if I understand correctly now - he stopped on a highway, held brake pedal and gas pedal at the same time, the truck wouldn't drive at first but then it would start driving?

And the hybrid truck drove right away while he was pressing both gas and break pedals?

Probably just a standing start. No need to press the brake while trying to accelerate. All sorts of software would prevent the hybrid from moving while the brake is pressed. The use of the highway would give a longer run at a higher speed. A drag strip could do the same thing I think :)

    Non hybrid

    Hold brake push accelerator.
    Let off brake.
    Truck stalls then takes off.

    Hybrid

    Hold brake push accelerator.
    Let off brake.
    Truck then takes off.

Does non hybrid do this because the engine auto off feature kicks in?

I don't quite understand the point of such test and what does it show?

I'm too broke after buying this rig to afford mods.
Hybrid here. Pulling my travel trailer 5500lbs+ (probably more, haven't weighed) up Halloran Summit - that's the I15 to Las Vegas from SoCal.

Turbo pegged, hybrid meter pegged. I was passing slower cars and big rigs in the truck lane going up hill. Hybrid boost meter went until battery was exhausted - you can see the little battery icon as it rises/falls depending upon assist/regen cycles.

I will say the Hybrid assist taps out at higher speeds, probably because not necessary at that point, but if you need more grunt the meter snaps to assist mode again. The pull up Halloran Summit was effortless in both directions.

    Hope this helps!

Kinda basic physics, i mean an electric motor (in the hybrid) will develop torque stopped while any internal combustion engine needs to be in motion or revved to a certain degree to produce torque.
