We picked up a 2006 SR5 Access Cab 4X4 on 28Dec2022. This will be our 4th Tundra, and can’t seem to stay away from em. Really diggin’ this truck after the 2.5 hrs. drive home back to the Fort Leonard Wood area. We bought the truck as a replacement for my son’s 2005 Double Cab was totaled this past Aug. We’ve had to play musical chairs with the trucks, but at the moment my son has my 100 series Land Cruiser, and I got this one. The main goal for this truck is to maintain the legendary reliability, but build and improve on a few things along the way.

We are again going with the theme “K.I.S.S." In the Army we use the saying "Keep it simple stupid" but I think "KEEP IT STOCK STUPID" works for what we are going for. This will be mainly my work truck, so I don’t foresee major modifications. It's a great truck and something my wife and I think will serve our family for years. So here we go, follow along, drop some tips, and bs along the way.

These are a couple of pics the sales guy sent me a few days ago, since their website wasn’t updated with photos.

Supposedly this is a one owner, well maintained Midwest truck. My concerns were mainly the frame and maintenance. Took a chance based on a few pics, made the drive, and brought it home.

    I like your plan.

I purchased my 2002 4x4 SR5 in 2003 and I have pretty much adhered to the K.I.S.S. approach you mentioned, the major non-stock items on the truck are JBA short tube headers that replaced the cracked factory manifolds, the addition of a Hellwig rear anti roll bar and the installation of a Kazuma/TRD LSD. I am nearing 170,000 and the truck has been extremely reliable with the only failure being a cracked radiator last year.

Nice. Thanks for sharing, i’ll be in the lookout for that radiator and OEM manifolds cracking. You in GA, perfect rust free zone. It was a challenge to find one with little to no crazy here in the middle of nowhere.

Nothing crazy, but didn’t take long to start buying shit for this truck, I noticed the temp control knob kept spinning when I test drove it. While taking the wife’s 4runner in for service I stopped by the parts counter to pick one up. Didn’t cost much, so I grabbed one and got it swapped out.

I love KISS. Wasn’t in the Army, but knew some guys in the KISS Army. At concerts, everyone thought I was in the FBI.

These trucks are fully capable in stock mode. Your son is stoked!

Thanks for all the feedback regarding the cost associated with the service. Looks like we made out okay on the final number we paid.

I think you should. You’ll be as happy as my friends who all made the switch. One buddy bought a used 09 Taco after falling in love with my truck back in 2012. He sold a year later and bought a new 2013 Rock Warrior.

Had another buddy do the same a few years later. Truth is they both wish they had a 1st Gen.

I can definitely see why they both wished they went with the 1St Gen Tundra.

Got so much wrapped up in the Taco, doubt i’d get a decent amount on a trade in. Probably have to sell it to a private party to get a good amount back:rofl:

Both my buddies paid top dollar for their Tacos. They were stock and bought because they thought pound for pound they were equal to the Tundra because the sizes were similar.

The market is good for selling Tacos, as they have a good following. The one friend drove 6 hours one way to buy his.

Wow! You are a good dad. Keep up the good work. My motto is keep it within stock parameters ish...
I do have a strong desire to buy a corolla and keep it stock to drive while my Tundra is the Fundra.

Hope your ex-wife finds happiness... just kidding of course - dings happen! Good looking truck and good on you for taking care of your boy. I like the KISS "build" page you got going so far. Like the socket kit - should've filled it with all 10mikemikes.

Sometimes my buddies give me crap for doing too much for my sons. And I always politely tell them to pound sand. Great Dads Unite!:fistbump:

Blackstone Labs Oil Analysis Kit came in today. Looking to send in a sample from my Tacoma which I used Amsoil Signature 0W-20 at my last oil change. Nothing crazy, just curious.

Picked up these OEM Tacoma wheels from my buddy, wanted to give em a shot on the Tundra but already bought some new 17” tires. Worst case scenario we have an extra set of OE Toyota 16” wheels. Great deal since all he wanted was our spare off of our 4runner.

Tired showed up today. Posted to the main What have you done to you 1st Gen thread.

Falken Friday at the Wood. My boy’s tires came in via FedEx. Wanted to get a full 5 but the deal was only for a set of 4. We will likely get a 5th one within 5K miles to work into a 5 tire rotation.Still gotta run down an alloy split spoke wheel.

This is cool. My dad bought me tools when I was around 20 and it took many years before I appreciated them. I still have and use them regularly. If I ever have kids I'll do the same thing.

Sweet find. If it was taken care of by the previous owner, 500k shouldn't be a problem with that engine
