Idler and tensioner pulleys, and belt

I'm getting the squeal from the serpentine belt and planning to replace. I'm considering replacing the tensioner and idler pulleys while I'm in there. Anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket pulleys or belt? Just wondering if there's something better out there. Thanks.

Just called NAPA. With my AAA membership, about $10 cheaper than OEM.

 

I replace mine with the kit. It seems like when one goes the other follows soon after.

Rotating the pulleys by hand with the belt removed will not emulate the squeak. The belt tensioners are a known issue. I would replace..

 

Replace the tensioner.

 

I just realized that I have an extended warranty on my CPO 2017. Just left message with dealer for a call back, to see if it might be covered. Easy to do myself, but why spend the money if they'll do it. My only concern is dealer will likely ONLY replace the belt and send me on my way...which means, I'll buy the Gates kit and replace the pulleys once I get it home.

 

I just installed the Gates kit that comes with the pulley, tensioner, and belt. Looked like great quality.

 

Not sure if the tensioner is a Toyota 3/36 warranty item...it wasn’t for the Toyota Platinum warranty I have.

I do know that the part is relatively cheap and not very hard to install. I had the dealer do it at 5k mi due to squealing and I think all-in it was under $300. I have the S/C but its the same tensioner with a longer belt.

Hardest part is dropping the skid plate (harder if you have the TRD Pro Skid) and rerouting the belt...if you can call that “hard”. A few bolts and the tensioner swaps out.

Change the oil while you are there.

I won’t call it an ‘issue’, but the tensioner pulley will start to squeak every few years depending on environment/ driving conditions.
After much research a couple years ago, I replaced my belt with a ‘Gatorback’ belt. It used to be made by Goodyear and was called Gatorback. It’s now made by Continental...I think they call them Elite, Poly V.

Best belt ever imo. It has angled cross sections that allow the belt to better deal with the various arcs/ curves of the pulley system.

If you really want to save money;
If your current belt is in good shape, I’d keep it.
While you could just replace the pulley, if the seals are okay, I’d just open it up and repack it with some quality grease.
So long as it’s not a worn out belt that’s loose, I’d just about guarantee the squeak is coming from the pulley b/c the grease around the ballbearings is worn down or out.

I'll be taking it to the dealer next Tuesday. I got the extended warranty for my CPO 17 when I bought it less than a year ago. So it's all covered. Only thing I'd have to pay for is cost of the belt, if it's worn due to age/use. Pulleys will be covered. If they want to charge me for anything more, I'll just take my truck back and order the kit off of Rock Auto and do it myself for $112

 

I just replaced everything due to a sequel when it was humid or after a rain. The OEM stuff is made by Dayco. I got the Dayco idler, tensioner, and belt for half the price of what the dealer quoted me. Looks exactly like the OEM parts I took off. The OEM tensioner I removed has DAYCO stamped on the back of it. Bought my truck brand new in 2016, had about ~44k miles on it when I did the replacements

The tensioner was what was causing the squeal for me, but I replaced it all as I was removing it anyways

No issues so far, but only have had it for ~3 weeks or so.
