Ideas for 2nd Gen Stereo

Howdy y'all. Any suggestions for a decent display that won't cost me a thousand bucks?? 2nd gen Limited. TIA

 

I’d check out Crutchfield first to see what fits your truck. The have all the adapters and harnesses. I think they charge less than $30 to prewire the harnesses which is well worth it.

 

Why are you looking for a new setup? Is yours broken? Do you want ability for dual camera, CarPlay, ect? Some idea of what features you’re looking for would help

 

I had the exact same system in my Tundra. I opted for the Dasaita Android Radio as I wanted wireless CarPlay and lots of possibilities. I’ve added a dashcam, TPMS sensors and app, ODBII scanner and Torque App, front camera, and just added a Harmon Spark WiFi Hotspot so I can watch tv through my Xfinity app.

It’s all in what your looking for, personal preference, and of course budget.

 

You are going to want a screen that is perfectly horizontal when mounted or you will have some glare

 

Dasaita option is about $500. I went extra cheap and bought a used Sony XAV-AX100. I think I picked mine up for $120. You can find them for about $200 on facebook marketplace. Carplay/Android Auto Compatible. I have mine set up with rear/front/side cameras, wireless android auto. If I did it again I might choose the Dasaita for the larger screen but I like the fact that Sony is a tried and true brand that I have no doubts will last a long time.

How did you set up the extra cameras? Do you have some sort of splitter?

Cheap enough for me to take the risk on it. Has been working great since I purchased in February. Basically you just plug one end into your head unit, and the other 4 inputs go to 4 cameras (not all 4 need to be used). There is a trigger wire that goes to the head unit that will tell the head unit there is video to show (same as a normal setup with the reverse wire). Then there are inputs for left/right/backup cameras. I tied mine into reverse lights and blinker signals. The front camera input can be configured to come on for 7 seconds every time you come OUT of reverse (ie. you reverse with reverse camera on, then when you switch to drive or park it will show the front camera.

It also comes with a little remote that I stuck up by the sunglasses holders in the one marked "CARDS". I use it all the time to check my surroundings without the triggers.

If you already have a stereo that can show video this setup will run you about $170, less if you already have a rear camera.

I get compliments every time a new passenger rides with me and see's my turn signal cameras. I recommend it.

The original idea was to put them in my tow mirrors but I was struggling to find a good angle. The cameras I got have a good range of motion but it was hard to get them to mount straight down, but have the view looking back. So, I put them in my fender flares. It made for a much easier install anyway and the wiring was much simpler. View is perfect to check my blind spot or the bike lane before turning and lets me confirm I am inside the lines when parked. Happy to answer any more questions.

Yeah I saw it in a friends late model sedan and thought it seemed like a good idea. Added a modern touch to the old '07 tundra.

 

Hey great work! I have the same camera switcher sitting in my "Projects" box. I'm planning to put a camera in the top of the tailgate that automatically turns on when the tailgate is down.

Where did you mount the front camera and what is the view? I'm not happy with the current location-I need to be able to see some of the bumper. Right now it's looking straight forward but I can't tell how close I am when parking.

 

Here are a few pictures. You cannot notice the front camera at all if you're not looking for it. Took me a few seconds to find it actually lol. View is good. I can tell when my bumper is about to hit something. Only downside is it is *slightly* off center, but not enough to make a difference. It is the camera linked above, $15 and has been working great since Feb. If you have the same exact switcher I recommend putting the remote up by the dome lights. It's the perfect hidden spot.

(Because I know someone will be curious, the other two lights in my grill are amber/white flashers for roadside construction work)

 

I installed a Pioneer DMH-C5500NEX. It can be purchased with Tundra custom surround. Larger than double DIN and doesn't break the bank (mostly).

I went down this rabbit hole a few months ago, I bought a Boss Elite receiver like the one a few posts above mine, $400 (it's OK, I'd prolly go Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine now, a big name) and an Alpine amp $300 (60w with dynamic boost or something, goes to 100w for peak performance) Put Rockford Fosgate component speakers in the front ($100), mounted the tweeters in the door, super easy these speakers sound clean but are totally underwhelming, I'm probably going to replace with some $300 6x9's, some kickers in the back door $100 (super happy with them) and a kicker subwoofer ($400) under the passenger seat, did the whole thing myself, probably took 2-3 hours labor total.

My takeaways were spend some $$$ in the front door speakers, my rockford fosgates are the highest rated speakers on Crutchfield because they were a good value, not because they sound the best, and don't skimp on the head unit (mine was only $400 I should have spent more, it's the beating heart of the system)

I have a stereo system that sounds -amazing-. it really does, it sounds incredible for all styles of music up until it's really loud....




but it doesn't melt your face.

It just doesn't, it goes really loud and then gets....boring, just kinda flat, up until there it sounds amazing, but it's not...big. You don't feel like you are in the stadium with Freddy belting out "MAAAMMAAAAAAAAAA OOOooooOOOOO DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE YOU CRY" You get the picture...but my stereo just....isn't....big, it doesn't blow your mind when you crank Comfortably Numb...close but no cigar.


I used to build stereos in my cars with house moniters, 2 massive amps, 15 6x9 speakers and blasting eruption by Van Halen or some Jimi Hindrix, or Thrift shop, these songs would bring tears to my eyes and melt my face.

That's not what I have, to get it there I need to replace the head unit and the front speakers.

So: if you want a stereo system that sounds great go through Crutchfields and cut some corners, that Kicker suitcase adds a whole dimension to your sound that doesn't break the bank, I can open the doors and provide sound for a pretty good sized outdoor event like I did last night or bite the bullet and spend 3-4 grand like I did with my last truck, although it didn't sound -that- much better, that was a all Pioneer, $300 speakers, $1200 head unit, $1200 sub woofer, $800 amp, it only sounded about 10% better so I definitely got my $$$ worth with this rig, like I said, I am just going to circle back and replace the front speakers and see how that sounds, then maybe the head unit.

Then I'll prolly go back to my insane hillbilly rigs where I have massive amps sliding around under my seat with connections using electrical tape with a constant burning smell with 3 sets of 6x9's and giant house speakers with 15" woofers filling the back seats.

 

What year is your 2nd generation? I have a subwoofer enclosure for a doublecab. I used 2 alpine type R 8's and provided the right power had my 07 rockin'. I'm in the Sacramento area and happy to let the sub box go....just taking up space.

This is so freakin cool! where do you wire the trigger lines to?

 

If I have some time next week I'll do a quick writeup. But here's the quick version:

The video switcher output replaces your current rear view camera input to your head unit. It also has a trigger wire that will replace your current signal. On the input side of switcher there is a connection for a camera, power to the cameras, and a trigger wire for L/R/Back (no trigger for front, but it will come on for 7 seconds after reverse signal is lost, can turn this feature off if wanted).

The backup trigger is wired to a taillight.
The left/right triggers are wired into the harness by the driver's side footwell. You can pick up the turn signal there. It is okay that it is a pulsing signal, as it will activate the camera for about 3seconds every pulse it gets, they stay on continuously while the turn signal is on.


I wired all the camera power wires back into the video trigger wire. There was an issue when wired "correctly" where you'd get a black screen if you switched too quickly between views. This workaround fixes that. More details in my Amazon review:

"The only hiccup I had was when switching between views in rapid succession (either by pressing buttons on the remote too fast or going drive>reverse>drive>reverse) sometimes it would get tripped up and not display any video at all until it reset. I narrowed it down to an issue with the controller providing power to the cameras. To get around this I wired all the camera powers to video trigger to head unit. By doing this all cameras get powered up any time the unit is telling the head unit to display video. Wiring it this way allows me to switch rapidly with no failures. The alternative would be to wire all cameras to constant power but I like this method better as it leaves all cameras unpowered unless one is being used."

The only other thing I did was wire in an extra button on my dash to some normally closed relays. I have one relay per trigger wire. Doing this allows makes it so when I push that switch in the on position it disables the auto-trigger of the cameras (switch on -> relays open). This is useful for urban areas when I'm using the nav unit for maps and don't want to keep loosing it for camera views on turns.
