So I think I need a RTT, what are some things I should look for in one ? What all would i need for my truck to mount one ? And do you usually keep them on your trucks year round ? I am not against a used one so any price points ?

I just got mine couple of weeks ago, and we have used it twice so far. That is because I never took it off it's nice to just pack and go. Not saying that I never will. I am sure I will rig a garage ceiling storage system some time in the future. When looking for one the most important thing was I wanted it to sit below the roof line as much as possible. I don't want to have to take it off every time I use it, I also did not want to affect the aerodynamics much, and I wanted top be able to fit the Pick-up in the garage when not in use. (It is Amazing by the way, but it changes how you camp slightly).

Yeah I will need it to sit below roof line. Put rack on my cap for extra space when rockhounding but couldnt get in a lot of places it was so high. Would like a RTT so i can park my camper and use RTT when I put my dumb ass in places my camper cant go. Gonna lift my camper some just for more clearance as it sits so low now.

I would stick with either tepui or CVT. Base your needs on how many you need it to sleep. I would recommend the annex option. Depending how many times a year you will use it will base if you need the ruggedized option which is basically just an overbuilt version. I would not personally buy the ruggedized unless I was spending more than 50 nights a year in mine, which is a ton. I have had my tepui autana Sky for 2 years and we use it all the time. Absolutely love it. We have run it on two setups. Some basic bed bars we built and now on the BAMF full bed rack from jerry. I typically always run with it on but pulled it off for the winter to make some changes.
See pics for the two different setups. I prefer the full bed rack setup so I can fully see out my rear windows and pack more.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Wow that's nice, 50 times a year would be a ton for me! I will look those brands up. Thanks!

If you want your rtt mounted low Relentless Fab makes some bed bars that keep the tent below roof height. BAMF and RCI both have low profile complete bed racks, just to name a few. Some people I know leave their rtt on year round and some remove it after each trip.
As for which rtt to get, there are many good options. A lot depends on your budget. Front Runner makes a nice “budget” minded tent. As mentioned before Tepui and CVT are good choices and James Baroud has some great high dollar tents.
There are many good options out there, just do a little google research to see what best fits your needs and budget.

Go tepui if going the soft shell route. Personally not a big fan of CVT but they appear to be popular.

IF you plan on using the tent often and encounter poor conditions like snow, high winds, and heavy rain the hard shell roof top tents would be preferred although typically more expensive.

I seem to get into a lot of rain and wind oh heck even snow. I did see a hard shell by the name Bigfoot, have you heard of that one?

If that's the case, good luck sleeping with all of the noise from a soft tent. It's like a ground tent but can be worse since you're up in the air.

I've seen Bigfoot but have no experience in person. They (and others) appear to have similar construction to the big players. Keep an eye out for used James Baroud, Auto Home, Alu-cab as these will be the higher quality units. My friend got a screaming deal on an Auto Home Maggiolina that is a couple years old and it surpasses a chunk of the china tents by a long shot.

Here are some classifieds to keep an eye on:

Would love to get an RTT, but I think that’ll have to come after sliders, skids and bedliner. Maybe someone should create a sort of RTT buyer’s guide, similar to the bumper threads @Sean266

I like the idea of a RTT buyer's guide. We have two boys(2.5 & 6 months) and are looking to camp this coming summer during those hot summer nights in SoCal. Or a solid road trip up to Oregon next year when they are bigger. I assume we would need the largest RTT that sleeps 4 with some nice amenities. This one looks nice: https://tepui.com/products/baja-series-aluminized-kukenam-4. Toss an annex in there and I think you're set.

Have only heard good things about Tepui, and their popularity speaks for itself. I ran into this company on Instagram, they make a good looking tent too:

    https://www.gofsr.com/

Haven’t seen any reviews of one from guys on here though.

I actually made a post a couple days ago about how Go FSR is offering a free RTT with a trailer purchase. I asked if anyone was getting a trailer anytime soon so I could bum off them on the trailer part...anybody interested in that?

I have a topper and just installed a frontrunner rack on my topper for my RTT. I like being able to have the room under the topper for camping accessories and have the tent on top of the topper. Just another option for you.

Yes that is one draw back and the aerodynamics are a drawback too having the tent placed on top of the topper. No kids...yet :)
