I REALLY want the 8.1ft bed on a double cab SR5, but how is the parking?

Hi All, as the title says, I'd love the flexibility of the 8.1ft bed, but I live in SoCal which is the land of tight parking spaces. I drive a 2006 Ridgeline currently and it fits fine of course, being a mid size truck.

We're a family of 4 constantly traveling, camping, and our gear keeps growing as the kids get older and we range farther and for longer periods. The move from the 5' to the 6.5' bed the Tundra provides would be great, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't just go whole hog and include the postage with the 8.1ft bed. If I lived elsewhere it'd be a no brainer, but I'm concerned about parking the beast in our busy area, and also the turn radius for dense suburban driving.

As a side note, any other owners with growing families care to comment on the Double cab vs. Crew cab? My kids are young now, but I keep vehicles for at least a decade so I'd have teenagers riding back there for long days on the road eventually. Is it big enough to meet that need too? Going down to a 5.5ft bed to get the Crew cab is a deal breaker for me, I might as well just get a new Ridgeline in that case.

    Thanks!

I went from a DC Tundra to my current CrewMax. I made up for the space with a AMP bed extender and a hitch hauler...sometimes both at the same time.

The DC back seat isn't as small as you think it is. 2 adults 6ft or under would be comfortable back there, depending on how tall the front seat passengers are.

While I thought I would miss the longer bed of my DC, the interior space I gained has been more beneficial too me. There's so much room I can throw shit I used to keep in the bed in there. On road trips my kids have more room to pack shit they want to bring with them.

How soon do you have to buy? What’s your budget? You may want to wait and see if the new 2022 Tundra comes with a 6.5’ bed in a Crew Max configuration.

Maybe grab some adult friends and go for an extended test drive in both the CM and DC. See which one they like best. Also, if you’re going to haul people much more often I would just get the CM and get creative with packing.

I have a '15 DCLB and live in the burbs. I do not need a Crew Max and I love the LB. I have parallel parked several times with no problem, I just wished the mirrors were auto tilt down when putting the truck in reverse. I usually back into parking spots. The backup camera is my friend.

I'm a double cab fan, people act like the double cab isn't roomy because they want an excuse to have full doors and no bed space. I grew up in vehicles with way smaller back seats than my tundra, I wouldn't even remotely call it cramped. The 6.5ft bed imo is superior over having your rear passengers having needless extra space. I can fit dirt bikes, jet skis, and tons of stuff diagonally with the tail gate up. In my opinion if you plan to use the truck as a truck, the DC is a no brainier plus will provide more than enough room for 95% of people riding in the back seat. And from the sounds of it you want more room to haul things, which a crew cab won't gain you.

The turn radius is spectacular, even with a longbed.

    Welcome from NY.

I have a double cab. I'm 6' 02" my 2 kids sit in the back, my daughter is 22 and about 5' 09" and my son is 17 and about 6' 00" no issues or complaints from them. Oh, the wife is 5' 05" but she sits up front.
I think you will be fine with a DC.

    Good luck with your decision.

You could always pay a shop to make a crewmax with a 6.5 bed

I have 2 kids, 4 and 7. The DC has been awful, but it’s mostly the car seats being too clunky. Once they are in boosters, the DC Will be fine, even more ok once they are out of carseats

So I have a Regular Cab LB and can not easily park that Pig either!
The mirrors seem huge but suck and I need to adjust them to try to get into any newer tighter spots and if I park in the back of the lot which I try and do anyway others seek out the truck to dent and ding or at least it seems that way to me.

So adding the DC length to that is not for me for sure!
