I have 4.6 tundra. I was wondering what could improve acceleration? My 05 Dakota was good on that

I think my 4.6 is snappy. I can get the tires to light up if I'm not careful.

The 4.6 is no slouch. When I had mine, a K&N intake and exhaust sure helped! I've also heard real good things about the throttle response accelerators like pedal commander and Idrive.

My first Tundra was dbl cab 4x w/ a 4.6 and as racingjohndeere55 and squatting pigeon said it will scoot. Never had a problem with the go pedal but it was also stock. Is yours lifted with bigger meats or stock as well?

Never had Toyota and it has factory stuff to it . . It sounds like when you have a vehicle and it has drive ,1 ,2 and 3 . So if you think you shifted into drive and started to drive off but accidentally have in other gear . So that would be a sound.. see on this shifter it only has drive

It doesn’t have S mode? By the way I think the 4.6 comes with 410 gears instead of 430 gears. But if you were going to upgrade and keep the stock wheels 4.88 could be pretty fun!

It does to left but I never learned on stick shift and only care about automatic doing it . I can worry about just driving. Could there be a low gear stuck in

Only if he has the tow package on it. Otherwise it's the 3.91 gears. The newer trucks don't even have the option for the 4.10s anymore :(

I suppose it isn't a huge change, 5% more torque to the wheel per gear. It should still be every bit as fast as a 4.0L Tacoma

edit: S mode only sets the top gear that can be shifted to. i.e. S4 will only allow gears 1, 2, 3, and 4. Basically a fancy 'overdrive off' setting.

I dont know what fer gears I have but I stopped on the side of the turnpike today to knock the nannies off. Forgot to shut them off before I left the rest area. I hammered on it and went from 0 to 70 fast enough that the car coming up behind me didnt have a chance to pass me.

The number is the highest gear the computer will shift to. If it's in S6, it's basically the same as D minus the mysterious 'shift learning' programming referenced in the manual.

Also Toyota automatics like to upshift to 2nd gear very early if you aren't wringing all the skookem out of it, so that can make the truck seem a little slow out of the hole

I think the way it went was if it had a tow/haul button it had the 4.10s. On factory tire size 2nd gear should redline at 68 mph with that axle or at 72 mph with the 3.91

If it had been given full throttle until the 2-3 shift it would have shifted at one of those two speeds at the 6000 rpm redline. Was just a possible clue to identify the axle. It's good that it has the torque and doesn't need to be pushed that hard tho.

I didn't realize both the 4.6L w/4.10 and the 5.7L w/4.30 do the wot 2-3 shift at 68 mph. Good on Toyota for giving the 4.6 shorter 1-3 gears to counter the taller diff

I do have a tow button and it not pressed. Sorry guys I'm not a auto guy where I would know hear ratios and shift points. I just need to know if this is normal for Toyota? If that s shift button affects it in automatic function. Like I said it sounds like when put a vehicle in drive but accidentally have it in 1 , 2 or 3 and you floor it and it doesn't feel right because in lower gear. I have had it in left position to see what it is and that is for shifting yourself. Figure it didn't matter what that settle is if not on left . I've never done manual . So if any Toyota tundra owner knows please help . Old 05 Dakota was good and had since almost new but started costing major money in 17 and 18 and was fixed but felt it was time and with 125000 miles being 13 years old shouldn't of had trouble.

On the dash, do you have a window directly behind the steering wheel that indicates the shift selector position/gear?

The window only shows selector position, and not the gear, except with trucks with the "S" or sequential shift position; then it will show the highest gear selected, but will shift normally up to the selected gear. When "S" is selected, the transmission will start out shifting normally up to S4 or 1:1 drive with no overdrive gears, but you can select the highest overdrive gear you want the transmission to use; e.g S5 or S6. From S4, you can also select lower gears, and the transmission will not shift above that selected gear.

If your dash window says "D", and your tow/haul button ISN'T pushed, and the shift points are at higher rpm than you expect, then you may need to have your transmission serviced. As others have said, unloaded Tundra transmissions should ease out of low gear pretty quick. If you keep your foot in it, the transmission will normally extend the shift points.

How many miles are on the truck?

Mmmm...OK, OP definitely doesn't have the sequential shift feature. The "S" shift position started in 2013, but only on 5.7L.

@Taz3114 Toyota trucks historically have been optimized for haul and tow applications. I have always assumed that Toyota considers those the primary mission of a truck, and believes a truck should do that well (within specifications).

Your Tundra weighs about 1000 pounds more than your old Dakota. If your Dakota had the 4.7L V8, it was rated at 230hp/290 ft-lb torque. Your Tundra 4.6L is rated at 310hp/327ft-lb torque, but then the gear ratios get involved. Your old Dakota would tow 3150lbs, your 2013 Tundra will tow 6500lbs. Tundra owners looking for acceleration usually select the 5.7L (381hp), and if that's not fast enough, then they add a supercharger. The 5.7L will tow/haul more, and it will "haul" it faster.

Anything you could do to make a healthy 4.6L "accelerate (much) faster" would cost more than simply trading your 4.6L in for same model year 5.7L. Them's the facts.

Well not trading in just wanted to ask people's experience with tundra . I wasn't asking about hauling. Its everyday driving.
