I can’t stand our instrument cluster

    Anybody with me?
I hate having to look through 5 different holes just to check some vitals.
I think the volt meter, oil pressure, water temp and gas could have been combined into 1 just like on the left with the tach and the gear indicator.
Aside from that, they’re not even centered. I can’t see most of the gauges on the right because they are too far over to the right.

This pic may make it seem like I’m holding the camera off to the right. That’s true but very negligible. The camera was pretty much right in front of my face and depicts my FOV of the dash accurately.

I’m literally thinking about getting a spare dash panel and start cutting it up to make 1 large hole so nothing would be hiding.

Has anybody modified the dash to look better?
This is literally my only gripe with my truck and the only reason I wish I had a 14+ model truck.

I really disliked my 07's cluster. My 14's cluster is night and day better. The 2nd Gen cluster was a poor design .

It's not the best design, but I've adjusted to the dash in my '07.

It's a non issue for me. Gives me the info I need. Not like you have to move your head around to see the gauges. I'm more unsatisfied with the orange back light

The part behind the holes is just 1 big piece. It’s 1 solid piece of plastic over the gauges. You could cut around the holes and make 1 big hole but not sure it’d look right. I looked at retrofitting something in my 2010 but you can’t buy the gauge part new cause of the mileage part in it and fraud with setting a new one.

Never really thought about it. It does seem "Dated" compared to our newer vehicles. It is functional and works well enough.

As far as modifying or changing; seems like unneeded work but would be curious what if anything could be done.

You're on the right path. If memory serves, I think that the panel with the holes just about pulls straight out without too much fuss and without having to remove too much else if anything. It may even be that what may need to be removed will fit back in place after the panel that annoys you is removed.

Aw, nevermind. I went out to my truck and had a look, that panel is wider than I remember. Modifications could still be made to it though I suppose.

I thought i was the only one that felt this way, i'm a mechanic so i always monitor my gauges when i'm driving, sometimes i have to look around to see the water temps or trans temp, like looking through a peep hole. Such a dumb design, love the truck though, 10/10 would buy again.

I do have to move around to see the gauges though. That’s why it’s such a pain in the butt.

If anyone wants to donate a spare dash piece I’d appreciate it.

I was wondering if there might be an aftermarket dashboard that you could get? Ive never really looked for one. I just had a new radio or head unit as some refer to it installed in my 13, i had added to that a module that can pull up engine data plus a rearview camera. That might be a alternative for you..

It won’t work for this truck but I had a DashBoss on a previous vehicle. I selected all the things I wanted to monitor and set it up in a spot that I liked. That way with a quick glance I could look at one screen and see all my favorites. Most the time I had it on trans temp, coolant temp, and I would alternate through a few different other gauges.

I've been driving a Tundra since 2000. I remember when the 07 came out going to the dealership to look at one and possible trade my 2000 for one. As stupid as it seems since the 2 generations are so different and the 2nd gen was such a step forward, I took one look at the dash and said nope, I'll keep my old one

Now when the 14 came out even though under the skin it was pretty much the same it had a wonderful design IMHO. I bought a 14 in Dec 2013.

Yep. Sounds like we have similar tastes.
When I bought my tundra 2 years ago it was about the only one I could afford that had my 2 requirements.. CrewMax; 5.7.

I have never liked the cluster in mine, either, since the day I test drove the truck. The holes on the right are so small and deep it's hard to clean and dust them well. I'm not sure what the designers were thinking when they drew it up. Also I'm not a huge fan of the Amber color. Over gotten used to it, but it really seems dated, like the green on old Macintosh screens.

The dash / gauges are functional and the amber illumination doesn't bother me especially since I was able to match the color with my Kenwood HU. I know that I would not like the digital display on newer models, no thank you.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
As much as I like the 3rd gen dash, my 2nd gen doesn't bug me that much. I would love to change the light color and even saw in another thread where someone installed blue lights. Looked great but that has got to be a royal PITA.

I guess that my posture/height is closer to what the designers/engineers had in mind. I've upgraded my red cluster from the stock/SR5 to the blue Limited Optitron version. But I wish that it were red as that color has less impact on a driver's night vision.

Honestly, I really don't mind the panel. It's dated, but I'm ok with that. I'd rather have a dated panel than a truck payment!
