I joined the forum a few days ago, and as I have been perusing the various build and mod topics one thing struck me... Some of you guys have some enviable garage setups!

I've become pretty adept at swatting mosquitoes while laying on my back under various projects through the summer, and in the winter, everything goes on hold until the annual Great Thaw.

How about you guys post pics of some of your man caves? Eventually I hope to build a retreat of my own... Any ideas on must have features?

For now I will just continue dreaming, planning, and drooling...

Welcome to the forum! If your a person who likes to wrench. Look into overhead or wall mounted retractable extension cord reels. Very handy and great to keep your garage clean. You can mount an air compressor tank and run a retractable hose line for any air powered tools. You can install garage storage over your garage doors. This is a space most people don’t use and it can make for a lot of room to put storage bins. 741D920D-58E4-4C91-BD66-19BC7E4CF9E9.jpg

That overhead storage rack is an awesome idea. I can't believe I never thought about putting one there.

I’ve done those racks a few times for my family and friends.

If you want a few suggestions for the install. Locate all your studs on the ceiling first. Then check your clearance with the garage door all the way up. Make sure your storage bins will fit. You can build the rack system on the ground and lift it overhead with a drywall hoist or extra help. This makes the install a lot easier and faster. 970057D9-7D66-4896-9F60-A66A28D04D38.jpg

Thanks for the tips! Any other cool ideas you've done or seen in you line of work?

I'm going to keep watching this thread. We just closed on a house and setting up my new garage is a big priority for me. Right now the walls and ceiling are drywalled. I'm thinking of removing the drywall, adding a ton of electrical outlets, installing a welder plug, putting in LED lighting, installing a slop sink with a hose connection and then sheeting the walls with OSB that I'll probably paint an off white.

I’m a big fan of a work area with a work bench, metal storage cabinets overhead and below. I like to have an outlet bar above my workbench area.
    DB1FE18A-9E05-48A8-8729-1C6771B89F61.jpg

If you want storage bins for small or medium size containers. You can install a track channel panel system similar to shown above. You can buy 4x8 sheets that have the track channel on them. Look up Gladiator storage systems for some ideas on this. They are typically carried by Lowe’s and sold online.

If you do a welder plug you want a dedicated circuit. Before you remove drywall for electrical outlets. Do you have insulation behind the drywall? If you can fish the wiring in between the joist, rafters or studs this will make the install a lot easier. If you may be able to do drywall patches or cover the drywall with a different finish material after your electrical rough in is done. If you are located in the cold look into a dedicated circuit for a garage heater in the winter time. If you have hot summer months a porta cool unit is always nice to have. If you have in insulated garage doors you can install insualtion to the garage doors to help keep your garage better insulated. An epoxy floor is always nice to have. I’m a fan of install a rubber floor system around my work bench area. This is a lot easier on your feet when your standing for long periods of time.

I would plan out your garage layout first. Think of things like work areas & cabinet storage. Then plan your ideal locations for outlets, lights, fan & storage. I would do you electrical & air hose rough in work first. Then do your drywall or finish walls next. If you do air lines they may be best to leave them exposed so you can get access to them for any leaks or adding additional fittings. You can do you wall and ceiling painting next. I would cover the concrete floors before paint. If you do an epoxy floor you want the concrete to stay clear of dirt and debris. I would do your floor system after all the rough in work and painting have been done. Then you can do any cabinets & storage areas after the floor is completed. I’m a fan of having the epoxy floor system return up the lower wall if you have a concrete curb. If you have drywall then you can look into having the rubber cove molding done. This is inexpensive and easy to install. I could go on and on with more ideas. Sorry if I just spent your money on more garage ideas. Lol

This is my man cave and my garage. Gets a little warm in the Texas summer, but no place I’d rather be.

I legit don’t have a garage, converted to a living room by previous owners. And no man cave inside. With 3 daughters though, the quiet outside is very nice, regardless of weather. Haha.

I am also jealous. I have a little tiny 60 year old one car that could barely fit a mid sized sedan before I filled it with junk, that will need to be freshened up with a new roof and trim in a few years if it remains standing. When we started looking for a home we had all these grand visions of huge 2 car garages and master suites and all this other awesome stuff.

Then we found something in good shape for about 50K less than we were planning to spend, with low property taxes that is 2 minutes from the highway we both use to commute, and a block away from the kindergarten, middle school, and high school our son will eventually go to if we stay. So pretty much all the other stuff went out the window. I was lucky enough to at least get an attic converted to a living space for a 3rd floor man cave. I hope to build a better garage in a few years.

I don't regret this house but I'd like to do the stuff I originally wanted one day, such as a big garage. Best I got is a canvas carport for my Challenger, other vehicles sit un-protected for now. Wife used to make a big deal of keeping enough space in the garage for a car, then started parking outside because she got tired of maneuvering.

Not much of a man/woman cave, but it's clean and organized. It houses my Tundra and Sonata sport just fine w/room to walk on all sides. Still waiting to hook up my flat screen and oscillating fan.

I built one of those from wood and lag bolted it to the cross beams in my garage. You wouldn't believe the weight it could hold for just under $100

You guys are inspirational. I should have some time tonight when I'm the only one home in my family. I may take advantage and do some cleaning up and organizing in my garage. It won't compare to any of yours, but I'd like it to be at least functional again.

Just sighed contract on a free-standing stick built 30x30 2 car garage. The one big difference we did is because wifes small car will leave us some elbow room we are getting a third garage door in the back for the golf cart and what not. Wont need to walk between the Truck. Also upgraded to 9x8 doors
