I'm sure this has been asked thousands of times; please delete if too redundant. I did search, but wasn't 100% on the answer. I had intended to get the package, but there's a Limited in stock near me that checks all the other boxes but doesn't have it...was considering pulling the trigger but don't want to settle due simply to impatience.

Buying a new Tundra...will be a ton of highway miles but also drive on muddy jobsites. Nothing like driving on trails, rock, etc, though.

How necessary is TRD Off-Road package (Bilsteins etc)??

    Thanks in advance.

Not at all. Your probably not going To take the time to put it in 4 low to use the locker on the job sight anyway. But the sticker looks cool and it helps hold resale value.

however the off road comes with a ton of cameras that are very useful for daily driving.

I use 4 low very rarely. I have a lottttt of miles of experience driving in mud but don't know much mechanically.

Some of it seems stupid, such as aluminum skid plates....every truck where I'm at ends up losing the factory black skid plates pretty soon lol

Let me ask this: do the Bilstein shocks make interstate driving any better or worse?

They were fine on my old TRD.

I think the new one comes with a mechanical locker. You can always add something like that later if you need it.

Will you use the locker? I off-road quite a bit in my ‘21 Off Road with no locker. ATRAC works great. But I still think having a factory locker, cameras, and MTS would be pretty awesome.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Unless you plan to be off road frequently I don’t think the TRD Off-Road package is mandatory. Then again the terrain modes and rear locker are nice upgrades. Plus I like the wheels on the TRD Off-Road.

If it were me I would probably wait for a TRD Off-Road package, but I plan to get back into hunting and will be off road a lot more in the near future after my 4 year break from hunting.

I will be "off-road" almost every day. Often, the ground is dry and it's the same as driving on a dirt road. There are enough times, though, that I have to get 2 miles through orange mud that I was trying to rule out needing TRD package. My other thought is that I have driven in the aforementioned a LOT in the past using just a basic F150 w/ 4WD, but didn't know if the extra weight of the Tundra might lend itself to some "off-road" upgrades.

Hope my rambling makes sense here

I did see a video and the owner test drove a limited 4x4 and then purchased a limited TRD Off road. He claimed that the TRD off road had a much smoother street ride.

im not sure how accurate this is , but I have decided to wait for a TRD off road for myself since I’m not in a huge rush although I am starting to loose patients waiting.

The whole situation currently is frustrating. I took a new job and need to buy a half-ton truck for it.......to get exactly what I want I'm going to be waiting forever seems like. Not requiring TRD seems to make it much easier to get one. And I actually kind of like my local dealer so I hate to go somewhere else.

I know a bunch of other people have the same problem right now though

Here in Florida I feel like I am seeing a lot of 22's with the Advanced package option listed on a bunch of trucks. I also see a bunch of TRD off road packages. I'd be interested to know what the ride quality is like with the TRD off road vs the rear air suspension and AVS in the advanced package. I am more interested in ride quality on city and highway. Will do very minimal off road but if the TRD off road package offers a better ride quality i'd go that route... So I am interested to what you find out.

Does the limited you are looking at have the advanced package or any upgraded suspension? I guess Toyota did upgrade their factory suspension for 22 with new coil springs so I assume the ride quality should be pretty good as is...

I was in the same situation as you and it sounds like you don't need the OR package. In the my case, I chose the Limited without the TRD package as I felt the extra cost was not worth it. My use would be at majority on road and when off road, I don't need to navigate technical trails/rock crawl. 4x4 High and low range has always done what I needed. If I need to get into somewhere dicey, I haul in an ATV. In my experience with having owned/own a Tacoma and Runner, the off-road package ends up decreasing the on-road ride quality with the beefed up shocks that don't really get used to the potential. I put my savings into some accessories and a second set of wheels for the winter.

If I lived in an area where I would be doing more technical trail riding, I would personally opt for a Tacoma or 4Runner with the OR package for the increased maneuverability of a smaller size truck.

Wait, does it really need to be in 4Lo to use the locker?

This is the correct answer. Truetracs are awesome and all these truck MFG's should be swapping to these instead of lockers. They are always on, always helping. I ran them front and rear on my Jeep Liberty and it was such a good setup.

I ended up getting decision fatigue and ordering an SR5 with highest TRD Off-Road package. I have spent like 25 hours staring at packages and trims and I can't take it anymore. In my heart of hearts, I want a 1794, but I feel like I can't justify the extra cost vs the aforementioned.

Unfortunately I don’t think Eaton offers them for Toyota axles. At least none I could find, just E-lockers.

Meh. I’ve become disillusioned with hunting in my current state of residence. I am not a fan of the lottery system for tags, nor how a lot of the public land is over grazed by ranchers’ livestock.

I always preferred the TRD Off-road package simply because of ride quality. I don’t off-road so have no real need for the package UNTIL I drive around NYC. Much more comfortable than a Sport or basic SR5 suspension. I don’t have a 3rd Gen but I am assuming Toyota followed suit in the new generation.

I was off road frequently in my Tacoma TRD OR with all the gadgets (multi terrain, crawl, etc.) and never used them. 4hi and 4lo got the job done. I hated the stickers and removed them right away. It might help with resale but that's just a guess.

My Platinum is terrible off road but new tires and shocks would go a long way to help that.

Biggest upgrade is the locker. Other than that you can build a better “TRD” yourself and save money. If you do it yourself. The only obstacle is the truck is brand new, so the aftermarket is infant but growing. Someone said there was a guy that used rear fox shocks from a Ram with minor modification. If there’s a will there’s a way.

I thought it did great on road but I never drove any other Tacoma so I can't compare. A lot of members on Tacomaworld.com prefer the Off Road feel on road.

I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to truly make my mind up between SR5, and dumping money into 1794 just because I think the interior is an 11 out of 10. I've learned in my life...when you can't decide between two things, do the cheaper thing.

i researched the shit out of the trims, packages, needs v wants, and settled on an SR5 TRD Advanced OR with all the gizmos. The only thing I could see myself ever potentially missing is the sunroof, but honestly the sun normally annoys me anyway, and haven’t missed it at all. Any questions on the SR5 feel free to pm me.

The TRD package is the only way to get a factory rear locker for the truck. The so called limited slip is actually only traction control like what has been on 2WD cars for ages. The computer senses that one wheel is spinning and applies the brake to that wheel. No clutches and no locking mechanism and no real LSD.
