How much were used Tundra’s before the whole shortage of chip/trucks?

I have been hunting for a used Tundra for a little over a month or two now and I can’t seem to commit to the current high price :(

Does any one remember how much was a 2016-2018 Limited, 1794 or Platinum with less than 75,00 miles before all the craziness of shortages of chips and trucks in general happened?

I keep seeing used limited, platinum and 1794 for higher than $45,000 most of the time they are 2017 and 2018 of course the 18’s are closer to $48,000.

Any one bought one of those trims before all the covid nonsense happened?

I got my 14 limited 4wd in 17 with 3k on the odo. $32k. I could sell it for that still with 50k on it.

I bout my 2016 SR5 Crewmax with 60k for 35k. That was about a year ago right before the market got real crazy. The value has gone up at this point.

I bought my 2018 Tundra Crewman Limited with 27,000 miles in June for $48K. Seems high I guess but traded in my 2020 GMC AT4 that I paid $50k for with 5,000 miles in January with a check engine light issue nobody could resolve that had 15,000 miles by the time I traded it. Ended up getting 56K trade and got my extended warranty cash back. The way I looked at it I got the Tundra for $40K and I was ok with that

This is about right for the SR5. I was offered $34k in 2020 trade in on my 2018 SR5 CM 4x4 with ~40k at the Lexus dealer.

I looked at 2016-2018s right when COVID was starting to impact the economy. A CPOed 2018 Tundra 1794 with 5K miles, they were asking for $45K for it. I offered them ~$38.5K for it (I think they paid ~$40K for it); they considered but didn't sell. The truck sold that weekend for the asking price or close to it.

I looked at some higher mileage Tundras as well, the lowest they hit were around $28K-30K at the time where a few were over or around 100K miles. They were all CPOed too.

A few months later COVID's impact depressed sales, I bought a new 2020 Tundra 1794 (no trade in) for just a hair over $47K+TTF during the "buyers" market. ~18 months later the shortages have created a "sellers" market where used cars are selling for more than new cars; on average used cars are marked up ~24% and the last report I looked at indicated the trend would go up for the next 6 to 8 weeks minimum.

The value of these truck is pretty remarkable. I paid $43,500 for my 2017 brand new. It’s got 58K miles on it and is 5 years old, clean, no accidents, perfect maintenance history, and I’m confident I could sell it for $43,500 or even more today if I wanted to.

When i was shopping in 2017, the price discount on used was negligible compared to a new one. Wasn't worth saving 1-2k on a 2 year old with 20k miles vs getting a brand new one. These things really hold their value.

Bought my 21 CM TRD Sport with Offroad and Other limited/platinum upgrades in September for $51k which was no mark up. The sameish 19 and 20 trucks with 15k - 50k were all more expensive.
I could sell it for more than I paid for it today!

I decided to buy my truck new for a number of reasons in 2019, but the primary reason was the price for used Tundras were still so high then. It only would have saved me a couple grand to buy used, and that was for trucks with over 30k miles here in the rust belt.

Oh man that’s a fair prices compared to now, specially since it’s a 2021. What state was the purchase in?

completely agree…. SR5 are easier to find that’s why the pricing is noticeably low compared to the other premium trims.

June 2020, when there were way more pandemic-related fears and worries, I got a 17 Platinum for $38k and 14k miles. I’ve seen prices for similar trucks with more mikes go into the 60s. Also since it came with lots of extras like the full TRD Pro suspension, I’d say I could’ve gotten that. But what would I do then? Unless a dealer offered me a ton now with a promise for a 22 Platinum at a decent price, I wouldn’t do it. Not even sure I’d like the 22 better, but at the right price the upgrades may be worth it and resale clock resets with a new truck. But my truck was such a steal that an offer would have to be crazy good. Also lucky that rates were super duper low then and they just wanted a sale, so down payment wasn’t an issue either. They also gave us a premium on the dumpy 2015 Honda CR-V we just wanted out of here.
Man, I just realized sometimes I forget how lucky I got. I almost ended up in a Ram just due to cost.

    Thanks for all the info…..

45k for a 2016-18 1794 is way unheard off right now specially for those miles.

1794 in California are going for 45-48 with 65,000-75,000 miles.

Man that was a low price…. What state was the purchase in ?

I couldn’t purchase at that time cause I was waiting on a job promotion that took almost a year and a half. Now that I can afford it I just can’t come around on paying 5-8 thousand dollars more than before the shortage of vehicles.

I guess I’ll come down to good deal on a used truck or just paying the premium price for something that I been wanting for a while:confused:

With the aluminum and magnesium shortage on top of the chip issues, and with forecasted inflation trends, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for prices to drop.

I started looking for a used tundra on october 2020 and limited+ trims with about 75k miles were still going for 34k+ in my area. Ended up just getting a trail edition on nov 2020 for sticker

I have seen some 2014 models going for 40-45k right now…
I was just trying to get something newer that’s not the first generation year.

I guess I’ll start looking on those years too.

You completely hit the nail on my thoughts on why trucks won’t come down on price and also some people that are are due for a new truck wont sell their Tundras to get new v6 twin turbo truck.

In June 2020 I paid $52k for a brand new GMC AT4 loaded plus the performance package (exaust and intake). I had to buy it 3 weeks before it shipped, but got a decent deal because inventory was still decent. I traded that POS in on my 2021 TRD Pro for $58.5 in August of 2021, and paid $3k over MSRP on the Tundra (that I put a deposit down on 35 days out).

I've been buying trucks since the 90s, this has been wild, and it's not getting better.

Oh yeah, just to add to my luck, since you’re curious where I got it….

I live in Seattle and there were tons for sale, it there’s a place here called Northwest Motor Sports I think, and they essentially specialize in paying low for your trade in, adding on some goofy over the top mods and pricing way over the cost of those mods, make it look as close to a mall crawler as they can on the cheap, and then ask you to pay the by far highest prices in town for a truck with higher than expected miles. It’s insane. Lipstick on a pig type sh—.

Ok rant over. So I wouldn’t pay that, I just kept looking. Knowing that Covid prices were on my side I just kept watching prices drop. (It also helped I work with viruses and at the time appeared to be one of the only ppl on earth with steady work, so I had buying power attractive to many sellers/lenders.) Stayed on Craigslist and called everywhere from here to Idaho to Oregon, wherever. Eventually found a truck almost 5 hours away, in Omak, WA just south of Canada, and they drove it to me just to show it, no promises to buy or anything signed. A phone call was all it took. I should’ve asked for a back rub

Not to hijack your used truck thread, but I got very lucky buying my new truck in June 2020. Got the Toyota rebate and about $4000 reduced off the truck by the dealer. Now, sticker price is considered a good deal…

Exactly my experience with Northwest Motorsports too. They give everything a cheap lift, plus wheels and tires, drench it in Armor All, and mark it up by $10k. When I was looking for a Tacoma, I test drove one there that was a few years old. I ended up just going to the Toyota dealer and buying a brand new one for less.
