My 2015 platinum just hit 100,000 miles. The only issue I’ve had is a broken wire that affected the automatic on headlights. Other than that I’ve had no mechanical issues. The only thing I do noticed in the tranny when first starting is there’s a slight lag between first and second gear if I don’t let it warm up enough. It’s almost like it’s searching for that next gear when starting off out of my driveway. I am not concerned as I never have an issue otherwise.
My question is when do you guys think it’s a good time mileage wise to trade? For me when I owned a Ford with a 5.4 triton it was the rust getting out of control on the truck. Otherwise I probably would’ve never had a great Tundra.

Can't comment with authority on the sweet spot for trade in miles... But if you have not flushed or changed out the transmission fluid recently, I would start with that to see if that cures your tranny issue. Lots of folks purchasing used Tundra with 100k miles so the market is there.

In all honesty there’s no magic number here… However in my personal opinion, there’s no reason in the world to stop driving it (based on the little information provided). Maintenance costs are a mandatory part of vehicle ownership and you seem to have not shockingly incurred many.

My question is when do you guys think it’s a good time mileage wise to trade?

In what context? To avoid mechanical problems or to get the best price for a trade?

If it's to avoid mechanical problems much of that depends on how you use the truck, serviced and current condition. If it's to get the most dollars for a trade, putting more mileage on a truck doesn't enhance trade-in value.

My question is.... why don't you want to keep it?

You can look at amortized value and compare that to what you would pay for a new one. It’s always a roll of the dice as to what you’ll spend on repairs, but you’re guaranteed to spend the money on a new one. That’s a financial decision you need to make. I drove my last Dodge to 300k miles. My current Tundra is going to at least 200k.

The trade value is unreal right now. I’m considering a new TRD-pro and the dealer is willing to give me 35K for my 2017 SR5.

A lot longer than you are asking about for me!

YMMV obviously and we each have to decide this one for ourselves.

How cold is it when this supposed shift issue occurs? Transmissions work off hydraulic pressure.....I know mine doesn't "shift right" until the trans is fully warmed up.

It shocks me how many people with seemingly close to "paid off" trucks happily get rid of them for another payment book. F that noise

I bought the Tundra expecting to keep it for 10 years or so. I will probably have about 180,000 miles or so on it at that time. I don't trade in my truck at a certain time trying to get more money for it. I will have 5 years of no payments that I will use to save up money for my next truck. After 10 years I am just ready for something new. The only other reason I would trade it in is if I didn't feel comfortable driving it across country without it breaking down.

Have always heard optimum time is before the standard warranty expires 3yrs or 36k miles.
The next would be before 100k miles. Seems value on trade in takes a hit over 100k.

I’m at 58K or so l and just put rotors and pads on all 4 corners. Changed the diff and transfer case fluids out at 50K. I’m going to do the transmission at 60K. I’m thinking 20 more years will get me to about 300K…. at that point I’ll start looking.

Not sure but mine does it too, even this afternoon in the 70's after a 10 hr sit. Have 73k miles now (bought at 65k miles) and will prob have private shop do the drain and fill on the tran and the diffs. Last oil change at dealer (prepaid) the tech recommended the rear diff fluid change every 30k miles and said no record it was done. Hmm it was bought certified used so found that odd and the 400 price to do it so taking to private mechanic or just do myself for all non-warranty stuff.

$400 to drain and fill the diff? I’m in the wrong line of work. Lol

Once "repair" costs start costing more than a yearly new vehicle would....I look to but another new vehicle.

Or if you needs change. We no longer needed our Sienna and it wasn't working for us towing, so we sold and bought a Tundra.

    Indeed !

almost forgot... the morning lag on transmission shift must be normal as my 19 4Runner did it also from brand new off the boat.

Much agreed…. I was talking more of the basic maintenance. Fluid changes, brakes, rotors, suspension parts, ETC. There is definitely a time to sell a vehicle when it becomes too costly to repair. And personally I have seen this go both ways. Meaning with fairly newer vehicles with lower mileage and vehicles with very high mileage. Financially it made sense to get out of my lemon 2017 4Runner with 55k and other vehicles I had were well over 150k. Hence why I don’t feel there is a “magic” mileage or years. Every driver and vehicle is different.

And of course in needs change…that’s a different story if OP stated that.

I’ve found dealers like the trade under 100,000. After that you’ll lose a little bit.
    I’d suggest
I agree and this was the case on my wife’s Highlander that was almost at 100,000.

I just traded my 2011 with 248,000 miles for $11000 credit on a 2019 Platinum with 44000 miles. I replaced the rear end bearings once due to overloading but no other issues.
