I asked the dealer to order power folding tow mirrors on my limited...

I’m thinking about asking them to install the power tailgate lock - how hard are they to install if I want to do it.

I have the pop and lock, which is pretty much the same thing. It was easy. Plan an hour to do it. Just have to run a wire and bolt in the locking mechanism. Hardest part for me was getting the wire through the boot thing under the truck and getting the boot back in to place. Not sure how the Toyota one handles that part.

Not bad,did it last weekend. Took me most of the afternoon but wasn't rushing it at all. The connection is very easy, plug n play. Disconect a male/female connector connection behind the passenger kick panel and a male and female connectors from the tailgate lock loom plug right in. The parts all fit great in the tailgate. Running the loom down the passenger side frame was pretty simple mostly following and zip tying to an existing loom. I also installed the OEM bed LED lights which uses the same grommet hole under the passenger carpet. I cut another hole in the tailgate lock grommet to feed the bedlight loom through. Fit great. The LED bedlight goes over to the drivers kick panel and you have to do 2 somewhat tricky taps behind the stock OEM exterior bedlight switch. Both took some time but worked out great. The OEM tailgate lock works great and you can hardly hear it. Locks when you fob lock it and opens when you hit unlock twice on the fob. Really like the security of knowing it's locked and with the remote Toyota phone app you can lock it from your phone (at least on 2020) if you forget.

Personally the less the dealer touches my Tundra the better, and I hate to think what the Dealer charge would be to do this install and it's not that hard. When I asked my dealer about the OEM tailgate lock they advised you have to carry another FOB. At that point I wasn't even interested until I did some checking. I found that it works with the Tundra OEM fob which makes sense since it locks the other doors and the tailgate lock wiring taps into that circuit.

Think no more. It's $150. *facepalm*

(Full disclosure: I'm busier'n crap and making OT pay, so I went ahead and paid for it, but mother of God that's expensive.)

That's not too terrible as long as they followed all the instruction routing and tie downs and tape securing for the wire loom. I would have guessed twice that amount.
Not too bad for you then and it's a really nice feature that should be standard, but that's another thing......

Yes, it was very easy. It has been several months, so I don't recall exactly how long it took, but trust me, you can do it and you'll love it!

They did - I asked and then checked. LOL

Other things, though, I'll do myself, like the N-Fab steps son and I installed tonight. Took MAYBE an hour and that was only because we were farting around w/the dog and such.

Installed mine last weekend. It came with instructions, but the detail was hard to see in the black and white pics. I found the instructions online and pulled them up on my iPad, pics were in color and I could zoom in if needed. There are a lot of zip ties and the pics show exactly where to put them. I like the fact it was all plug and play with no splicing of wires.

Did you guys order the power lock assembly though a Toyota dealer or get it online somewhere?

You guys convinced me that I need this option on my new 2020 too!

    Thanks for the help.

I used these instructions from my old forum.
I ran the wires inside the camera wiring loom from the truck to the tailgate.
Tight fit, but made it work.
I also put a little leftover sound deadening Dynamat in the tailgate to help quiet it down.
No way I'd pay a dealer to do it.

    https://www.tundratalk.net/threads/pop-lock-power-tailgate-lock.347154/page-4#post-4535153

Kids bought mine on Amazon and gave it to me for Father's Day last year.
I love knowing that I didn't forget to lock the tailgate.

^ This. Dealer had it for $160 but matched what I was seeing online.

I ordered the Pop N Lock kit for $90. I have seen the OEM Toyota kit that is $150-ish.

The OEM kit comes with plenty of zip ties, nice grommets, and you can download extremely clear and concise directions.

The PNL kit comes with no grommets, fewer zip ties, more generic instructions, but in my opinion a slightly heavier-duty actuator.

Both kits are a pretty easy install, with some crawling around under the truck.

I second the recommendation for sound deadening material in the tailgate after install. Since it’s enclosed and not occupied, I used Quick Roof, and lined both the inside of the access panel, and the sheet metal surrounding the actuator.

After you have installed it, you will be puzzled as to why they didn’t just do it from the factory.

It’s not hard at all. I found the instructions that Roman posted on another thread to be really thorough and easy to follow. The harnesses that come with it are plug and play. No wire splicing. The worst part was running the wiring under the truck. But that wasn’t difficult, just tedious. Only took me a few hours and I was being very slow and meticulous. If I had to do it again, I could probably do it in like 45mins.

Easy as shit. OEM is clean, plug and play with all necessary stuff. I picked up sound deadening material from Amazon and coated the inside of the tailgate when I had the panel off.

I had PopnLock on my old truck and it worked flawlessly. But... it was loud AF. Which is why you keep seeing people talk about sound deafening.

the OEM is quiet. It sounds just like your other door locks.

Yup. The OEM one is super quiet in my tundra

I’ve got an aftermarket one in my tacoma and it’s loud as hell. Really considering replacing it with the OEM one. It’s much nicer after having both.

I actually bought sound deadener and planned on installing it, but the OEM was quiet enough for me without it. Sounds about the same as other doors when locking/unlocking IMO.

I recall it took me around 1.5 hours. Pretty easy. Still can’t figure out why a $50k truck doesn’t have this standard. My buddy’s lower trim f150 has this.
