Do you use the self checkout or goto a clerk?

I goto the clerk because i convinced myself that i was somehow saving someone’s job but the machines keep coming. I asked a manager if im making a difference by not going to self checkout. She said the analytics are scrutinized and it’s hard to tell.

I also feel like I’m a paying customer that’s bagging my own groceries. So the company makes out even better.

I understand your view; my wife feels the same.
But for me, it's getting in and out faster.
Plus, I don't have some idiot putting one thing in one bag, or crushing things because they don't know how to bag.

The stores don't care; they save money on self-checkout and push customers to do it.
My new Home Depot is all self-checkout except the Pro checkout, which I'll use if I have a cart full of lumber or whatever.
But grocery stores, unless I have a cart full of stuff, which is rare, I'll just do it myself and be gone.
I think that's what corporate is counting on.

I use a clerk.... All the local Holmes depots are all "self" check out. The assistants usually just scan my stuff and put them in bags. If I really need to go in and out, I'll use the online feature and pick it up at the locker.

I rarely use self check out unless it's 5 items or less.
    I don't work there.

I do a great job keeping my emotions in check......until I have to use the self checkout! I swear I nearly put a .45 round though that thing the first time I had to use it!

Wife does most of the shopping so I don't have to fool with it much. When I go to Lowe's, I park over at the lumber section, and even if I am buying just one bolt, I go back to lumber so I can have a real person do the checkout. When I get over there I get into line, no matter how long, and I loudly ask "is this the line for the people that hate the self-checkout?"

This usually gets some laughs from someone and then we have a short conversation.

I do exactly the same thing at Walmart. They always kept one clerk on and her line is usually long, but my question aways gets some laughs out of someone and we'll have a chat while we wait.

Self checkout unless the timing is right and the cashier is open as I go by. It helps if she's easy on the eyes.

The shortest line is whatever line I'm NOT standing in. There could be 30 people in line A, and one person in line B, and I would be stuck behind that one person in line B as I watch 45 people go through line A. Not complaining (usually) just making a statement of fact.

But I prefer going through the line with a real person behind the register. If I'm forced to use a self-checkout, sometime I push the HELP button just because... I mean, sometimes I have to make sure that I'm punching in the correct code for my donut - 'Is it 444, which is a standard donut, or 446, which is a fancy donut'; they completely eliminated 445 which was a better-than-peasantly-444-but-not-as-hoity-toity-as-a-fancy-donut donut. Or I purposely bring items that require an ID (like spray paint) though the self checkout to show the machines that they suck and real people are better...

I don't mean to need help but I usually need help.

If enough people refuse to use self checkout, it'll be taken out.

The only reason a store removes or reduces self-checkout is because of theft.
It has happened to stores in Dallas.

Corporations don't care about customers; they care about the bottom line profit.
It's funny that you think that if people refuse to use self-checkout, and they won't, a store will change its policy.

I think it's well-documented that customer non-participation works. Since you won't take my word for it, ask Budweiser. They have some recent experience with that. I think it totaled about 3 billion $ in losses.
    As for me....

One night at Lowe's, about three years ago, I do my normal "go over to lumber to avoid self-checkout." Two men literally have the blue wood-loading carts lined up to the rear wall! I think they bought $65,000.00 worth of lumber (no joke, I saw the receipt). They were building their own garage. I had three items.

"So, what do I have to do to get in front of you?" Them: "Help us load it." Me: "It's a deal."

I checked out, spoke with the wife, went back and it took the three of us 45 minutes to load all that onto their impressively long trailer. When finished they asked, "what do we owe you?" I replied: "Nothing---you already paid, you let me go in front of you." We all had a laugh, shook hands, and went our separate ways.

I'll take an extra 45 minutes of heavy lifting to avoid the self-checkout.

I use lockers at Home Depot for most things except lumber. I use pickup at the super. They load me up and I'm on my way.

Good for you for standing your ground; you're a great American.:oldglory:
But if you were so dedicated to the cause, you wouldn't have asked to go first; you would have patiently waited for your turn and then helped them out.
A lot of us do things like that; we just don't feel the need to pat ourselves on the back to internet strangers.

But if you think Kroger gives a shit that you'd rather stand in line for an hour while I'm in and out in 5 minutes, you're delusional.
There will be no non-participation in self-checkout; most people value their time over standing in line because you think you are are sticking it to the man waiting to be checked out.

Enjoy your wait times; I have better things to do.

I’ll use a self check out or a human cashier depending on my tolerance for human interaction at that moment, the length of the line ups, and the items I’m buying, or the quantity of items I’m buying.

I truly don't understand self checkout.

Let's fire half our work force, replace them with machines and leave 75% of the machines turned off during peak hours.

I was at Walmarks the other day and the self checkout attendant asked me to leave a rating upon completing my transaction. I forgot to double bag my green beans, so I gave myself a 1 star rating.

I use the self checkout, to answer the question.

I hate self checkout. The only time I use it is it there's a lineup for all the cashiers.

Yep, you're right, I'm wrong, and just a bad person overall.

I run two small businesses. There are some things I will just not do. If I had a store, I can't see myself allowing self-checkout. That view might change though, since I've never run a store.

Oh gosh, the reviews! I have done, and prefer to do, a written memo to said employee's direct supervisor, to be put into their file. I hate online reviews and since flip phones don't scan anything, that means getting out the magnifying glass to read and manually type in that long web address.

I normally do self checkout because most baggers don't know how to bag things anymore . No the bread don't go on the bottom with a 15 pound ham on top.
I do regret getting in the self checkout when mom thinks her 3 year old child needs to learn out to scan her crap and I'm there for like an hour because little Timmy is so special....

Depends on the circumstances and the store.

Most of our groceries are coming from Target. Wife online orders what we need, I pick it up after work on Thursday or Friday. Drive up, they load it, I'm out.
If in store (rare) and 10 items or less, self-check. Lots of stuff? Manned/Womanned check lane because we'll likely need a human to fix some inevitable screw up if we did self check.

Local Kwik-Trip gas station I'll usually head to the cashier. I use the same station and I know them, they know me. I don't mind the interaction.

If I'm carrying minimal groceries (in a basket), I'll do self checkout if there's no cashier available. But otherwise (and definitely with a full grocery cart), I go to the cashier and wait in line which I don't mind. When the self checkout supervisor comes and offers open self checkout stations while I'm waiting for a cashier, I politely ask what the employee discount code is for self checkout. Takes a moment, but they figure it out.

As another poster mentioned, 90% of our grocery shopping is delivered to the front door. 5-9% is done at Sams club with Scan n Go (every store should have this), and the remaining 1% at other locations is handled as described before.

OK, kinda dark but I'll play along.
So if I'm understanding "checking out of life" correctly:
Would you want to take the advice of someone (still) here that had tried but failed? Obviously if they're here to give advice on the subject, checking out didn't work too well for them.

I assumed someone was talking about how they imagine they would go, not a failed attempt at ending it themselves. There have been other threads recently about what happens to one's "toys" when one does go, probably why the other poster and I thought this thread would take a much darker theme.

I've known several who've attempted through various means, and seen the scars and the graphic depictions. I've also known several to have succeeded in doing so. It certainly isn't pretty, and it really causes a mess for those one leaves behind.
