I have a 2014 Tundra and the tailgate will not open. I have used the key to unlock the tailgate but it is stuck and the handle just moves up and down. How can I get the tailgate open?

There are about 8 torx screws along the top half of the inside of the tailgate; remove those and it will expose the internal mechanisms.... just grab the long silver bar w/your hands and move it to the side and the tailgate will pop open. The video below will show you how to open it and also replace the latch; it's an easy fix that's not too pricey!!!

Try taking the backside of the tailgate off on the opposite side of the latch which will expose the latching mechanism and see if you can see if anything’s broken or not hooked up right when you pull the latch, or try and manually open it once the rear cover is off

I'm constantly doing that shit

but for me, it's usually been answered 2 or 3 times along several posts in the thread, several hours earlier... I just didn't scroll down at all before responding; all good though

Odds are the handle is broken, just like mine a few years back. Had to remove the inside panel and pull both rods inward towards the handle. Probably gotta koala it, depending on your height, I'm stumpy so I prepared for the drop.

I'm having a similar but different problem. My latch lever works...when I pull the handle, both rods pull. It's just that my driver side latch is in the stuck closed position (tail gate is down and can't close).
Is there a way to release that lock mech? I've pulled off the interior panel and all the mechanics seem to be working. I've attacked with a screwdriver trying to force it open, and I've also PB'd the gears on both locking mechanisms on each side of tailgate.
    Ideas? Ty

Figured it out. The left locking mechanism was in limbo, not all the way up or down. Pushed it down (locked position) then opening it. Works.
