It appears clean. What type of undercoat? If they used a certain undercoat like zeibart stay clear. It traps moisture and will rot from the inside out

Kinda looks like they may have went over existing rust. Looks like some flakes or what have you. Where the metal basically separate and sheets apart. Hard to tell from pictures. I'd be concerned with the boxed in portion/ front of frame. There's evidence of rust in that picture. I'd poke around at it if they let ya. If not walk away. Doesn't look as smooth as I think it should if the metal was good before the application.

Those bubbly areas huh. There seems to be hints of orange peeking through here and there as well.

The undercoat was put on for a reason which we truthfully cannot know. If you want a good truck, travel to the southern states. Last time I checked there were a few good trucks in Texas, New Mexico and Florida.

I know it’s difficult for some to make such a journey to buy a truck but investing hard earned money on so-so vehicle will cost you more cash in the long run and not to mention the frustration.

Just a quick look around to see what’s around me. I usually avoid miami but this thing appears clean and they claim it to be garage kept

Actually from that pic I can see the red stripe, there should be a badge also. The waltrip came in 2 colors, silver sky metallic and blue (can’t remember name of the blue).

I can't say the frame has any rust penetration issues, but it definately has rust on it that they simply covered over with that undercoating. And it appears to be "paint-type" vs a "fluid/oil" type of coating -- which is a problem. If you're going to paint something, you have to remove all the rust.

Thanks all, I’m from northern Vermont and the truck is in NY and 5 hrs away. The undercoat was put on in 2018. I’ve asked for a few more pictures to see the other side of the frame and the rocker panels. Owner has said there is some surface rust but no rot. Only way to get a clean frame around here is if it has a new frame, but the last two new frame tundras I looked at had body rot... if this one is a no go I may wait till the summer when I can travel across country to get one.

gotta have the double cab for our family too

It is a DW Tundra... You can just make out the signature decal on the left rear corner of the bedside... Tell tale grill, Red strip, and the decal on the rear

    Looks just like this VVV

Now with that information, you definitely want to go south. These trucks are notorious for rust, you can find a clean DC 4x4 with no rust history, then spend a little and have the undercoating applied to protect your investment. Try and look in rural areas, stay away from the larger cities.

Like @Hooptytrix says. He posts Tundras from S. Fla all the time with good condition at really good prices. Coolifornia is mostly overpriced from what I can see.

Thanks again all! I got some more pictures from the seller and it looks like he’s spray painted everything, and the rust is still showing through. I don’t think it’s worth a day drive just to be disappointed

Keep looking... you're better off without that truck. Especially at the price he's asking. Mine was rough, but I got it cheap, and was confident in repairing it.

So...I had to go see it, went with cash just in case but with no intention to buy unless I was pleasantly surprised. And it will be no surprise to any of you it was a complete rust bucket underneath. The rest of the truck was pure mint and it was so hard to stomach. Owner let me spot check and peel off some undercoating, which turned out to be a rubberized undercoating. With the undercoating came layer after layer of frame. I could not find a single exposed piece of metal that was not rusted.

For the life of your trucks please don’t use rubberized undercoating. There was one or two spots where the owners application of undercoat did not cover the Toyota recall spray and those spots were just fine. In 4 years that rubber undercoat has destroyed the truck.....(assuming the recall undercoat service did its job.

the trip wasn’t a full waste of time as I know feel more confident in quickly passing on vehicles

Yeah, folks learned in the 80s & 90s that rubberized undercoating was a disaster. Unfortunately, it still persists.

The Toyota spray was not a legitimate solution -- they should have been sued over that. They knew they had a problem, and the spray just bought them a few years.

I'm not sure if or when you may decide to try going south but let me know, I live 3 minutes from FTL airport and the poolside cabana room is private, you are welcome to stay. My house is for sale so that offer is for as long as I am here.
